குழந்தையாயிருந்தவனுக்கு அறிவு வந்து, தானே மந்திரங்களைச் சொல்கிற சமயத்தில் உபநயனம் நடக்கிறது. “பிக்ஷாசர்யம் சர” (பிக்ஷை எடு) என்று இந்தச் சடங்கில் சொன்னால் பூணூல்காரப் பையன் “பாடம்” ( baad `ham) (அப்படியே செய்கிறேன்) என்கிறான். அதனால் இவனுக்கு உபநயனத்துக்கு முன்பே “பிக்ஷாசர்யம் சர” என்று சொன்னால் அதைப் புரிந்து கொள்வதற்கான ஸம்ஸ்கிருத ஞானம் இருக்க வேண்டும். ஐந்து வயதில் படிக்க ஆரம்பித்தால் இரண்டு அல்லது மூன்று வருஷத்தில் இப்படிப்பட்ட பாஷா ஞானம் வந்துவிடும். ஆதலால் எட்டு வயதில் பூணூல் போடவேண்டும் என்றாகிறது. எட்டு வயசுக் குழந்தைகள் அர்த்தம் தெரிந்து பூணூல் போட்டுக் கொண்டு ஜபம் பண்ணிவிட்டால் லோகமெல்லாம் நன்றாக ஆகிவிடும். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

Upanayanam event happens to a child at a time when he starts to recite Manthras on his own. “Take Biksha” (Bikshacharyam Chara) is being told to the ‘VaTu’ (kid who gets Brahmopadesam) in this Upanayanam Samskaram and he responds “Baad`ham” meaning I’ll agree (to take Biksha). So it is clear that the ‘VaTu’ already had that Samskritham (Sanskrit) knowledge to understand the meaning of the above mantras related to Biksha even before the Upanayanam. When a child starts to learn Sanskrit at the age of 5, he obtains this level of knowledge within 2 or 3 years. So it is quite obvious that the Upanayanam samskaram has to be conducted at the age of 8. The entire world will get benefitted when the eight year old children understand the significance of Upanayanam Samaskaram and start performing the ‘Japam’ (Gayathri Japam).  – Pujya Sri Kanchi Maha Periyava
