வேதத்திலிருப்பதை எல்லோருக்கும் நன்றாக விளங்க வைப்பது பதினெட்டு புராணங்கள். பதினெட்டு உப புராணங்கள் வேறே இருக்கின்றன. பதினெட்டு புராணங்களும் சேர்ந்து நான்கு லட்சம் கிரந்தம். ஒரு கிரந்தம் என்பது 32 எழுத்துக்கள் கொண்டது. பதினெழு புராணங்கள் மூன்று லட்சம் கொண்டவை. மிகுதியுள்ள ஒரு லட்ச கிரந்தம் ஸ்காந்த புராணம். பரமசிவனைப் பற்றிச் சொல்பவை பத்து புராணங்கள், அவைகளுள் ஒன்றே லட்சம் கிரந்தம் உடையது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்
