குரு என்றால் கனமானது. பெரியது. அதாவது பெருமை உடையவர். மஹிமை பொருந்தியவர் என்று பொருள். பெரியவர்களை ‘மஹாகனம் பொருந்தியவர்’ என்று சொல்லுகிறோம். கனமென்றால் Weight அதிகமென்றா அர்த்தம்? ஒருவர் உள்ளுக்குள்ளேயே அறிவாலோ, அனுபவத்தாலோ, அருளாலோ பெருமை பெற்றவர் என்று அர்த்தம். ஆசிரியர் என்பவர் வெளியிலே படிப்பிலே பெரியவர். வெளியிலே போதனை பண்ணுவதில் சதுரர். வெளியிலே நடத்தையால் வழிகாட்டுவதிலே சிறந்தவர். குரு என்றால் இருட்டைப் போக்குபவர் என்று சொல்கிறார்கள். குருவுக்கும் சீடனுக்கும் ‘லிங்கா’க உபதேசம் இருக்கிறது. குருவிடம் இருந்து புறப்பட்டுப் போய், சீடனுக்குள்ளே புகுந்து, அவனை ஒரு மார்க்கத்தில் தீவிரமாகத் தூண்டிச் செலுத்துவது ‘தீட்சை’ என்று அறியப்படுகிறது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

Guru can be defined as Big and Heavy. He can be defined as significant with good qualities. We address elders as having the quality of ‘Maha Ganam’ (Good Weight). Does ‘Ganam’ refer to a person is Weight or Over weight? It refers to a person’s inner qualities, intelligence, experience, and grace. Teacher is some one who is well learned externally. He is good at teaching externally. His traits act as a guide for people to follow. There is a saying that Guru is the one who removes darkness. The ‘link’ between Guru and Sishya is upadesam (teachings). This upadesa starts from Guru, gets into the Sishya (disciple), triggers him towards a goal.
