சிவன் கோயில்களில் கர்ப்ப க்ருஹத்தில் உள்ள லிங்கத்தை மஹாலிங்கம் என்கிறோம். எந்தக் கோயிலிலும் மஹாலிங்கத்திற்குக் கபாலீஸ்வரர் என்றோ வன்மீகநாதர் என்றோ பல பெயர்கள் உண்டு. ஆனால் ஒரு மஹாலிங்கத்துக்கு மாத்திரம் மஹாலிங்கம் என்றே பெயர். அந்த மஹாலிங்கம் மத்தியார்ஜுனத்தில் இருக்கிறது. மத்தியார்ஜுனம் என்பது திருவிடைமருதூர். அங்குள்ள லிங்கத்தை மஹாலிங்கம் என்று விசேஷமாகச் சொல்லுகிறோம். காரணம் சோழதேசமே ஒரு கோயிலாக இருக்கிறது. “சிவ: சோளே” என்று சொல்வதுண்டு. சைவத்திற்கு சோழதேசம் பிரசித்தம் என்பது அதன் அர்த்தம். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

In Siva Temples, the Garbha Gruha (Inner Sanctum) having the Linga is called as ‘Maha Lingam’. In any temple Maha Lingam is called with many names as ‘Kabaleeswarar’, ‘Vanmeega Naathar’, etc; but only one ‘Maha Lingam’ is called as ‘Maha Lingam’. That Maha Lingam is located in ‘Madhiyarjunam’. ‘Madhiyarjunam’ is ‘Thiruvidaimaruthur’ Kshethram. The lingam there is called specially as ‘Maha Lingam’. The reason is Chozha region (Tanjore Distict in Tamil Nadu) is a region of Temples. There is a saying called ‘Siva: Sole’.
