My Father did not take my Mother for His Darshan!

But so what! :)))

This must have happened in early 70’s. Maha Periyava had camped in Trichy and it was during Shankara Jayanthi. Everyday pooja, upanyasams and discourses were held in Tennur Subbaiah School. Our residence was in Tennur Pazhaiya Agraharam, very near to the Perumal Temple. Every day was a festival in and around there. Even though HE had camped there for many days, my father, an ardent devotee of HIM, had not taken my mother for a darshan. My mother openly asked him to take her for a darshan but he did not take her.

One day Maha Periyava visited the Perumal Kovil, and when He was doing pradakshinam outside the temple, HE had to cross our house. That time, an Ayurvedic Doctor by name Shri Nataraja Iyer, told Maha Periyava, “indha aathuladhaan shankara jayanthi poojaiyellam aachu Shankara Jayanthi pooja was conducted in this house only!”.

Immediately HE entered the house! By that time, my mother who was inside, hearing some noise, came out and was surprised to see HIM on the footsteps. Boundless joy, ecstatic moments for her! No one expected that HE would enter our house. My father did not even know much how to offer Poorna Kumbham. She was very delighted as HE HIMSELF came to give her darshan!

Later my father used to tell her that Maha Periyava came to our house just to give her darshan..

KARUNAMOORTHY — what else can we call HIM.

Narrated to me by our own Maha Ramesh.

In several cases, the devotion comes through generation. I did not know that Smt Maha Ramesh falls under the category. How blessed is her whole family!!

I always wonder, how that mami/family’s face would have been at that moment! Shocked, excited, scared, delighted – what not!!

Moral of this incident::

 It isn’t just enough to listen to stories and sleep like a baby 🙂 We need to learn from them too.

(1) Unshaken faith, bakthi is heard by Him – isn’t He the sarvavyaapi? He knows all – what we want and what we deserve. Our job is to be simply attached to Him and detach ourselves from everything else.

(2) Periyava’s bakthi towards Adi Acharya is known to all. We have read and seen in interviews that He pours His blessings for those who worship Adi Acharya. If my memory serves right, Sri Photo Seetharaman mama built a small model temple for Adi Acharya and showed it to Periyava. Periyava was extremely happy and mama describes in that interview on that incident. While we do all other jayanthi/aradhana etc, let us not forget Adi Acharya. Without Adi Sankara, there is no sanatana dharma. In fact this posting came at a right timing in the blog where there is a debate going on the dates of Adi Sankara etc.

My aththais lived in that same agraharam till the entire agraharam fell apart – eventually sold out to some local muslims etc….We used to visit that place almost every time when we go to Trichy. Glad to know that you’re from that same place.

Hara Hara Sankara Jaya Jaya Sankara!

  1. BLESSED IS THE PERSON WHO HAS NOT ONLY FORTUNATE TO HAVE THE AUGUST PRESENCE OF PERIAVAA AT HER DOOR STEP BUT IT ALSO SHOWS THE MORAL THAT WHEN SOMEBODY INSISTS THAT THEY SHOULD BE TAKEN TO VISIT PERIAVAA, WE ALL SHOULD OBEY IT UNEQUIVOCALLY.—HARA HARA SANKARA JAYA JAYA SANKARA.

  2. This is a wonderful and blissful experience.
