எங்கள் ஊர் வெங்கடேசப் பெருமானுக்கு சாளக்ராம மாலை செய்து, வெள்ளிக் குப்பி செய்து கோர்க்கப்பட்டது.
அந்த மாலை மூணு பாகங்களாக ,எடுப்பதற்கு சுலபமாக, கோக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. நான் அந்த மாலையை ஸ்வாமிகளிடம் காண்பித்து ஆசி வாங்குவதற்காக சென்றிருந்தேன்.
அந்த மாலை மிகவும் பெரியதாக , கனமாக இருந்ததால் கீழே படாமல் இருப்பதற்காக என் தோள் உயரத்துக்கு மேலே தூக்கியவாறு வைத்திருந்தேன்.
பெரியவாள் மாலையைப் பற்றிய விவரங்களைக் கேட்டு தெரிந்து கொண்டார். அவர் பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கும்போதே, என் கைகள் இடுப்பு உயரத்துக்கு இறங்கிவிட்டது. இதைக் கவனித்த பெரியவாள் ‘மாலையின் எடை என்ன, வெள்ளி எடை என்ன ‘என்று விஜாரித்துவிட்டு,”உன்னுடைய கை கனம் தாங்காமல் தோள் உயரத்திலிருந்து இடுப்பு வரை வந்து விட்டது. இந்த மாலையைப் போட்டால் பெருமாளுக்கு கழுத்து வலிக்காதா?”என்று கேட்டார். அடுத்துஒரு கட்டையை
திருவாசியில் குறுக்காகப் போட்டு, அதில் மாலையைத் தொங்கவிடச் சொன்னார். என்னே ஒரு பக்தி பாவம்!
பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கும்போது ”எந்தக் கோவிலில் முதன் முதலாக சாளக்ராம மாலை எந்த ஸ்வாமிக்கு அணிவிக்கப்பட்டது தெரியுமா” என்று கேட்டார்.
யாருக்கும் தெரியவில்லை. ஒருத்தர் காஞ்சிபுரம், ஒருத்தர் திருப்பதி என சொல்ல, அவரே ”அதெல்லாம் இல்லை குணசீலப் பெருமாள் ”என்ற தகவலுடன், அதைச் செய்தது ஒரு ராயர் என்ற தகவலையும் சொன்னார்!
ஒரு பெருமாள் கோவிலில் எப்போதோ நடந்த தகவலையும் மறக்காமல் நம்மிடம் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள அவரன்றி யாரால் முடியும் என எல்லாருக்கும் புல்லரித்தது.

கிட்டத்தட்ட 25 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு டெல்லி சென்றிருந்தோம். அங்கு உள்ள ஸ்ரீ லக்ஷ்மி நரசிம்ஹர் கோவிலில் பெருமாளுக்கு சாளக்ராம மாலை சாற்றி பார்த்ததாக ஞாபகம் .

English translation
SaLagrama Maalai Ganakkuma
We had prepared a SaLagrama necklace for the Venkatesa PerumaL in our town. That necklace was split into 3 parts making it easy to assemble and dis-assemble. I had to gone to show this necklace to SwamigaL and take His approval.
Since that necklace was very long and heavy, I had lifted it and was keeping it above the level of my shoulders to prevent it from touching the ground.
Periyava enquired about the details of the necklace. As He was talking to us, my hands came down to the level of my waist. Periyava noticed this and asked me, “What is the weight of the necklace, what is the weight of the silver in it ? Unable to bear the weight, your hands have come down to the level of your waist from the level of your shoulders. If you put this necklace on Perumal, will His neck not pain ?” He asked us to fix a pole across the idol and hang the necklace to it. What a sense of devotion !
As He was speaking, He asked us, “Do you know in which temple and to which deity was SaLagrama necklace first put ?” None of us knew. Some of us said Kanchipuram, some of us said Tirupati but He Himself gave the answer, “It is none of those places. It is GuNaseelam PerumaL”. He also gave the information that it was a lawyer who got it prepared.
Nobody other than Periyava can share with us information about an incident which happened a long time back. Everybody was just thrilled.

Two passages I quote from Yennipadigalil Manthargal. Not only is periyava seen like this in this episode but also in the case of Kasu Maalai for Mylai Karpagambal where he advised a velvet cloth backing so that Ambal’s neck is not hurt!!!
