சுமார் ஐம்பந்தைந்து வருடங்களுக்கு முன் நடந்த ஓர் சுவையான சம்பவம்…
ஸ்ரீ சரணாள் சேலம் பகுதியில் யாத்திரையாகப் போய்க் கொண்டிருந்தபோது, அவருடன் சிலரும் நதிவழியாகவும், பரிவாரங்கள் சாலை வழியாகவும் போய்க் கொண்டிருந்தனர். அப்போது குதிரையின்
மேல் நகரா அடித்துச் செல்வது வழக்கம். இது ஒரு மசூதி வழியாகச் சென்றபோது மசூதி வழியாக
இதெல்லாம் போகக் கூடாது என்று குதிரையின் முன்கயிற்றைப் பிடித்துத் தடுத்தார்கள். இதனால்
சிறு சலசலப்பு ஏற்பட்டு ,சிலர் மத்யஸ்தம் செய்தார்கள்.
மறுதினம் மேற்படி மசூதியைச் சேர்ந்த ஒருவர் மடத்து அதிகாரிகளிடம் ஸ்ரீசரணாளை தனியாக சந்தித்துப்
பேச அனுமதி கேட்டார்கள். மடத்து அதிகாரி, முதல் நாள் சம்பவத்தை மனதில் கொண்டு, அதற்கு மறுப்பு சொல்லிவிட்டார். வேண்டுமானால் எல்லாரும் இருக்கும்போது சந்திக்கலாம் என்றும் சொல்லிவிட்டார். இந்த விஷயம் ஸ்ரீ சரணாள் காதிர்கு எட்டியது. ஆனால் அவர் தனியாகச் சந்திப்பதில் தனக்கு
ஆக்ஷபணை எதுவும் இல்லை என்றும் அவரை வரும்படியும் கூறிவிட்டார். இதில் மடத்தில் உள்ளவர்களுக்கு விருப்பம் இல்லாவிடினும், வேறு வழியில்லாமல் எதிரே இருந்த ஒரு வீட்டில் சந்திக்க ஏற்பாடாயிற்று. மறு தினம் பெரியவா அந்த வீட்டு வாசல் கதவை உள்தாழ்ப்பாள் போட்டுக்
கொண்டு தான் அவரிடம் பேசச் சென்றார்.
மடத்து அதிகாரிகள் கலக்கத்துடன் வெளியே காத்திருந்தனர். பெரியவாளிடம் சென்றவர் பெரிய காகித உறை ஒன்றை எடுத்துக் கொடுத்தாராம். அதில் என்ன என்று பெரியவா கேட்டதற்கு பெரியவாளைப் பற்றி தான் எழுதிய சம்ஸ்க்ருத ஸ்லோகங்கள் என்று சொல்லி அதை அவரே வாசித்துக் காண்பித்தாராம். நாக பந்தம், கருட பந்தம், சக்ர பந்தம் போன்ற சாகித்ய மரபுகளுடன் அழகாக வாசித்தாராம்.
” இதை யார் எழுதியது யார் சொல்லிக் கொடுத்தார்கள்’ என்று கேட்டதற்கு தன் பரம்பரையினர் சம்ஸ்க்ருதத்தில் விசேஷ பயிற்சி பெற்றவர்கள் என்றும், பரம்பரையாக வருவதாகவும் பதில் சொன்னார். அவர்கள் கசாப்புக் கடை நடத்தி வருவதாகவும் கூறினாராம். இதை ஸ்ரீ சரணாள் ஹாஸ்யத்துடநும், த்ரில்லிங்காகவும்,ஸஸ்பென்ஸாகவும் சொல்லி எல்லா ஜாதியிலும் மதத்திலும் நல்லொழுக்கம்,
பண்பு உள்ளவர்கள் இருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதனையும் குறிப்பிட்டார்.
இவர்தான் பின் நாளில் வேத பாஷ்ய கல்லூரி ஆரம்பிக்க மிக முயற்சி எடுத்துக் கொண்ட ஸப் ஜட்ஜ் திரு கமாலுதீன்!
இந்த சமயத்தில் நான் ஒன்று கூர நினைக்கிறேன். என் சித்தப்பா ஸ்ரீ லக்ஷ்மிகாந்த சர்மாவை அழைத்து
பெரியவா ராஜா வேத பாடசாலை கும்பகோணம் , ஸ்ரீ கோவிந்த தீக்ஷிதர் அவர்களால் சுமார் நானூற்றைம்பது வருடங்களுக்குமுன் ஸ்தாபிக்கப்பட்டது அதன் நிர்வாகத்தைச் சிறப்பாகச் செயல் படுத்த திரு கமாலுதீன் அவர்களை சந்திக்குமாறு சொல்ல சித்தப்பா குடும்ப ஆசாரம் கருதி அதனை தள்ளிப் போட்டு வந்தார். ஆனால் ஒரு நாள் பெரியவாள் கொடுத்த நெருக்கடியில் ஜட்ஜ் அவர்களை சந்தித்து ஆசார்யாள் ஆஜ்ஞைப்படி அவருடன் அராபிக் வகுப்புகள் எப்படி நடைபெறுகிறது என்று போய் பார்த்து அதன் பிறகு ராஜா வேத பாடசாலை நிர்வாகத்தை மேற்கொண்டதுமன்றி, வேத சம்ரக்ஷண பரிபாலன சபை ஒன்று நிறுவி அது இன்றளவில் நல்லவிதமாக நடை பெறுகிறது. ராஜா வேத பாடசாலையில் பயிலும் மாணாக்கர்களுக்கு அரசாங்க உதவித்தொகையும், ஆசிரியர்களுக்கு மத்திய அரசாங்க ஊதியமும் பெற்றுத்தந்தார்.
திரு கமாலுதீன் அவர் ஜீவன் இருக்கும் வரை எங்கள் அகத்தில் வந்து சாப்பிட்டுச் செல்லும் பழக்கம் இருந்தது. இன்றளவும் அவர்கள் சந்ததியினரும் என் சித்தியைப் பார்த்துச் செல்கின்றனர்.
பெரியவாளிடம் திரு கமாலுதீன் கொண்டிருந்த பக்தி அளவிட முடியாதது. அதுபோல் ஜஸ்டிஸ் கம்பராமாயண விளக்கவுரை எழுதிய இஸ்மாயிலும் பெரியவாளிடம் அளவு கடந்த பக்தியும் மரியாதையும் கொண்டிருந்தார். பெரியவாளும் இவர்களிடத்தில் மத இன பேதமின்றி அவர்கள் அறிவு, ஆற்றலுக்கு
மிக்க மதிப்பளித்து வந்தார் . பக்தி என்பது ஜாதி, மத இனம் கடந்தது என்பதற்கு இதுவும் ஓர் சான்று!

Periyava and Muslim devotees
This interesting incident happened about 55 years back.
Maha Periyava was once travelling in Salem district along with his attendants. Then, it was the practice to have drummers beat drums kept on horseback. When the party was going in front of a Masjid, some people from the Masjid raised objections and stopped the horse by its reins. Some scuffle ensued and some
people had to intervene and mediate.
The next day, one person from the Masjid approached the Matam officials and asked for permission to speak with MahaPeriyava alone. The previous day’s incident was fresh in their minds and they turned down the request. They said it can be arranged in the presence of others if it were all that important.
Periyava somehow came to know about this. HE said He had no objections in meeting him alone and further sent for him. Even though the Matam officials did not like this, since there was no other way, the meeting was arranged in a house that was opposite the Matam. The next day, Periyava bolted the door from inside and proceeded to talk to him.
The Matam officials waited outside anxiously. Apparently, the person who came to meet Periyava gave Him a big paper envelope. When Periyava asked him what it was, it seems he said it contained Sanskrit Shlokams about Periyava and even read it out to Him. Apparently, he read it out beautifully adhering to the literary rules of ‘Naga Bantham’, ‘Garuda Bantham’, ‘Chakra Bantham’ etc.
When Periyava asked him, ‘Who wrote this, who taught this to you?’, the response was that his family was specially trained in Sanskrit and that it was handed down from generation to generation. He also said he ran a mutton shop.
Periyava, with a smile playing on His lips, related this thrilling incident, packing it with suspense ! HE further pointed out that good cultured people existed in all religions and castes.
This same person in question put in a lot of effort towards setting up a ‘Veda Bhashya’ college. It was none other than Sub Judge Shri Kamaluddin !
At this point, I want to say something here. The Raja Veda Patasalai was established by Shri Govinda Deekshathar around 450 years ago. Periyava called my uncle (Chittappa) Shri Lakshmikanth Sharma and asked him to meet Kamaluddin and negotiate with him to run that institution. Citing orthodoxy of his family,
my uncle kept postponing it.
But one day due to pressure applied by Periyava, he met the Judge and as per His orders, went along with him to see how the Arabic classes were being conducted and after that not only did he take over running of Raja Veda Patasalai but also set up ‘Veda Samrakshana Paripalana Sabai’ which is running well to this day. He also enabled Government scholarships to the students studying in Raja Veda Patasalai and Government stipends to the teachers working there.
Till Shri Kamaluddin was alive, he used to come to our house and dine. To this day, his children come regularly and meet my aunt (Chitti).
It is not possible to measure the Bhakthi Shri Kamaluddin had in Periyava. Similarly Justice Ismail who wrote a commentary on Kamba Ramayanam, had a lot of Bhakthi and respect for Periyava. Periyava too had high regards for their knowledge and erudition, without discriminating them based on their religion.
This just goes to show that true Bhakthi is beyond religion and castes.

What can be said about this superb write-up from Shri Ananthakrishnan Natarajan!! Words fail me to write about that Muslim scholar about his interest in Sanskrit or about the passion with which he propagated Sanskrit studies. Remarkable. When H.H. Paramacharyya attained Siddhi, many Muslims and Christian Nuns paid their homage to the Great Soul. Many would have seen this scene in that telecast. It is said that Bhagavan Ramana always advised Bhagavan’s Christian admirers or devotees, who wanted to convert to Hinduism: “There is no need to convert yourselves, but learn to be true Christians”.

Also , I want to mention about one more Muslim
In downtown Worli, it is common to hear the strange greeting of ‘Assalamu-Alaykum, Guruji’ whenever an 80-year-old Muslim man steps out of his modest home.He is none other than renowned Sanskrit scholar Pandit Gulam Dastagir, who over six decades has impressed the Shankaracharyas, late prime minister Indira Gandhi, RSS leaders and Islamic scholars, all with equal elan.
Armed with a deep knowledge of both Islam and Sanskrit, Pandit Dastagir can speak with authority on any religious topic — and earn their unabashed admiration.
Born in Chikhali village in Solapur district, Pandit Dastagir completed his schooling before joining a government Sanskrit institution.
“I was the only Muslim student in a class of around four dozen Brahmins. My Brahmin Guruji developed a special liking for me and encouraged me. I acquired my entire Sanskrit knowledge of the scriptures, Vedas and other texts there,” Pandit Dastagir said.
Around mid-1950s, he shifted to Mumbai and joined the Maratha Mandir Sansthan’s Marathi-medium Worli High School as a Sanskrit teacher for all classes.
Two decades later, to comply with professional requirements, he appeared directly for a Master’s degree in Sanskrit from Mysore University.
After the Emergency, when the Janata Party ruled India, Pandit Dastagir was suddenly targeted. “They suspected I was a namesake Muslim propagating the RSS and Jana Sangh ideology through Sanskrit. It was only after a long investigation that they were proved wrong,” the man chuckled.
When Indira Gandhi returned to power in 1980, she summoned him and was surprised to discover that Pandit Dastagir was actually a ‘Syedvanshi’, or belonging to a clan considered the direct descendents of Prophet Mohammed.
“She met me several times and appreciated my knowledge and love for Sanskrit. In 1982, she told the education ministry to appoint me as a ‘Rashtriya Sanskrit Pracharak’,” Pandit Dastagir said.
When baffled officials asked Gandhi how should his duties be classified, she reportedly shot back: “He will teach us what needs to be done. Let him function independently.”
For two years, he toured India extensively and propagated Sanskrit in government and private institutions. He quit the post after Gandhi’s assassination in 1984.
“I acquired MA in Sanskrit only in 1987 when I was around 50 years old although I was proficient in the language long before.”
Since his retirement, Pandit Dastagir lectures on the similarities between Islam and Hinduism with reference to various aspects of one of the world’s oldest and richest languages, Sanskrit.
“Sanskrit is not only for Brahmins. But this perception made the masses reluctant to study it. I create awareness about Sanskrit all over India among different castes and religions,” he said.

Pandit Dastagir explained that Hinduism does not recognize ‘conversions’ or the caste system. “The current craze for ‘conversions’ has no basis in Hindu scriptures. It is not recognized. At best, you can change a person’s name, not his soul from the religion of his/her birth,” he said.
An old darling of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), Pandit Dastagir credits the group with giving him full encouragement to pursue his vocation without having to change his religion.
He feels the RSS was not against any religion. “But if anybody threatens Hinduism, they will hit back, irrespective of the opponent’s religious beliefs,” Pandit Dastagir said.
He has also never encountered objections from fellow Muslims over his passion for Sanskrit. “Comparative study of different religions makes you more reasonable. I am not a fanatic, just an ordinary Muslim.”
His love for Sanskrit has not made him lose Islamic identity. He prays daily at the mosque. “I have built up a huge library of thousands of books on Sanskrit and Islam which I study and propagate,” Pandit Dastagir said.
He laments that there are many other Muslim Sanskrit scholars in the country but financial constraints prevent them from propagating the ancient Indian language.
Pandit Dastagir’s wife Vahida is a supporting housewife. Their son Badiujjama is a Sanskrit scholar but runs a shop, elder daughter Gyasunissa Shaikh runs a Sanskrit research centre in Solapur, and their other daughter Kamrunnisa Patil never pursued her father’s passion.
