Periyava had talked so high about this mahan.
“என் மாதிரி ஒரு மடாதிபதியாக இருப்பவரைப் ‘பெரியவா’ என்பதில் விசேஷமில்லை. ஸ்வயமான யோக்யாத இல்லாவிட்டாலுங்கூட, ஸ்தானத்தினாலேயே எங்களுக்குப் ‘பெரியவர்’ பட்டம் கிடைத்துவிடும். நான் சொல்கிற பெரியவர் மடாதிபதி இல்லை. அதற்கடுத்த படியாக லோக கௌரவத்தைத் தன்னுடைய ஆச்ரமத்தினாலேயே ஸம்பாதித்துவிடுகிற (மடாதிபதியாக இல்லாத) ஸந்நியாஸிகூட இல்லை. க்ருஹஸ்தராகவே வாழ்க்கை நடத்தியவர். ஆனால் “குலபதி” என்று புகழக்கூடிய அளவுக்கு ஏராளமான சிஷ்யர்களுக்கு குருகுலம் நடத்திப் பல மஹாவித்வான்களை உருவாக்கிய மஹா மஹோபாத்யாயராக இருந்தவர். ஸந்நியாஸிகளுங்கூட வந்து பாடம் கேட்டுக்கொண்டு போகும்படியான அப்பேர்ப்பட்ட பாண்டியத்தோடு கூடியிருந்தவர். மஹா பண்டிதர் என்பது மட்டும் அவர் பெருமையல்ல. உசந்த குணவானாகவும் இருந்தார். சிவபக்தியில் சிறந்தவர். பரம ஆசார அநுஷ்டானத்தோடுகூட ரொம்பவும் சீலராக வாழ்ந்த பெருமையும் அவருக்கு உண்டு. ஞானம், சீலம் இரண்டிலும் பெரியவராக இருந்த அவரைத்தான் ‘பெரியவாள்’ என்றே லோகம் சொல்லிற்று. அடையாளம் தெரிவதற்காக, அவர் வாழ்ந்துவந்த ஊரின் பெயரைச் சேர்த்து “மன்னார்குடிப் பெரியவாள்” என்று சொல்வார்கள். உயர்ந்த அறிவு, சிறந்த ஒழுக்கம் இரண்டும் கூடிய அவர் 19-ம் நூற்றாண்டு ஆரம்பத்திலிருந்து இருபதாம் நூற்றாண்டு ஆரம்பம் வரை ஸுமார் தொண்ணூறு வயசு ஜீவ்யவந்தராக இருந்து ‘ஞான-சீல-வயோ வ்ருத்தர்’ என்கிற புகழ்ச் சொல்லுக்கு முற்றிலும் உரியவராக இருந்தார். மஹானாகிய அப்பைய தீக்ஷிதரின் வம்சத்தில் வந்த அவருடைய சர்மன்* த்யாகரஜர் என்பது. அவர் யாகங்கள் செய்ததால் ‘த்யாகராஜ மகி’ என்று தம்முடைய நூல்களில் தம்மைப் பற்றிச் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருப்பார். ‘மகம்’ என்றால் யாகம். சின்ன வயசிஸில் அவரை வீட்டிலே பெரியவர்கள் கூப்பிட்ட பேர் ராஜு. அதனால் ராஜு சாஸ்திரிகள் என்றும் சொல்வதுண்டு. ஆனால் பேச்சு வழக்கில் ‘மன்னார்குடிப் பெரியவா’ தான். ஊர் உலகமெல்லாம் பெரியவா என்று அழைத்தாலும் ரொம்பவும் அடக்கத்தோடு எளிமையாக இருந்தவரவர்.”

dear Sri Mahesh, extremly happy to see your mail. You have taken me nearly
fifty years ago when I was studying 8th standard at National High School.
We were residing at first street, just four houses away from the house
of Mannargudi periyava where his daughter was living if my memory is
correct.My maternal grandfather Sri Krishna iyer of nearby village
Radhanarasimmapuram used to visit the family members. I have
totally forgotten what my grandpa told about Mannargudi Periyavaa.
Recently Kanchi Sankara Mutt is being run and the annual
jayanthi of Mannargudi periyavaa is celebrated.I was fortunate
to participate on two occasions.
Sri S.V.Jayaraman of Chennai is arranging the event with all sincerity
and devotion. The birth star of Mannargudi periyavaa is Sravana nakshatram
