Andavan Pichai is another contemporary woman composer who composed in Telugu, Tamil and Sanskrit. It is said that her vision of Lord Muruga was the impetus behind her compositions. One of the well known songs for all us “Ullam Urugudhayaa” was composed by you but got lot popular after TMS sang that song. She is also an ambal upasaki. She has composed a Tamil version of Soundarya Lahari. It is believed that she composed a poem on ambal while she was delivering her child!
It seems that this great soul has been born with a special devotion and a blessing from divinity from childhood. Once when Mahaperiyava was visiting her place, everyone in her street were standing outside with poorna kumbam etc. Her parents were also one among them. When Periyava approached and told her father, “Go and call the girl who is washing the dishes inside”…”She is not an ordinary girl…She is Aandavan Pichai”. After she came out Periyava accepted the poorna kumbam and blessed her. This incident was narrated by one of the people who were there at that time…(I dont have a proof for this!). In her last days, she went to rishikesh and attained siddhi.

I wonder how this incident could have happened in terms of chronology. This devotee Andavan Pichai was born in 1899 and Mahaperiyava ascended the Peetam in 1908 when she was about 9 years old.
Did this incident happen when Periyava was about 13-14 years old ? She was married off at 9 years though she remained in her father’s house for few years after that.
In 1908 when she was 9-10 years old she had received Subramanya Swamy’s grace already.

Greetings. Most divine composition of Andavan Pichai is -Thanthai Thai irundhal Umakku indha nilai…” sung on Lord Shiva has no parallel both in its divine meaning and lyrical richness. Ms N.C.Vasnthagokilam was my mother’s favourite singer and she could hardly get opportunity to hear in her life time, though she used to mention this frequently when I was 10 years old. I am sixty six now and I had searched hard to get her renderings from You Tube and this composition by Ms Andavan Pichai which I located recently among the available songs by NCV is just unmatched.
I am also having two boys who lost both their parents and as a single father I had legally adopted them. When I hear this song I just get lost but there is hope that even Lord also has no parents.
The simplicity of lyrics and the language used is just beyond description of words. No wonder Mahaperiyava blessed this great person.
My request is that we need to spread the singing of these compositions at as many private and public settings as possible. She had done a wide variety and thanks for the readers for posting it on You Tube to create awareness.

Devi manadapujais not fully in this book.I am fortunate enough to take a writing copy from Mathamma(we used call Andavan pichai amma like)when she was alive.She is our distant relation.IfAny body have her Devi Pancharathnam keertans?That was fentastic I forgot that and I don’t have lyrics.But this Devi manadapuja is my daily parayanam.At this age of seventy still I am telling daily

Smt. Meera Prkash is the maternal grand daughter of Andavan Pichai Amma. Her mother Smt. Kamakshi Kuppuswamy is the daughter of Andavan Pichai Amma. Smt. Meera Prakash has posted in the You Tube some songs of Amma, “Kapaliishvaram Bhaje” is in Her own Voice! Very great work indeed. The descendents are planning to bring out all Her songs in book and CD form soon. I request early release of these which will be a boon to Devotees. Probably Smt. Meera Prakash is in US. I do not know their address or other contact number. P.D. Pani and Sons, Triplicane, Chennai published Her books of Songs of great profoundness, simplicity and steeped in Devotion. I am fortunate to have ‘darshan’ of Andavan Pichai Amma twice when I was a young girl,while learning Thirupugazh and Thevaram at Kalikambal Temple,Chennai. First at this temple and other at Vaishnavi Temple,Ambattur. Amma is a great Soul. She composed many songs on Kamashi,Meenashi,Saradambika,Nadarajar and Panchadasi keerthanaikal. Since I was young,I dont know much details. If anyone got the Kamakshi keerthanaikal please post it.
