It is sad to note that Dr Alagappa Alagappan passed away on October 24, 2014. As we all know he built the first Hindu Temple in US – Maha Vallabha Ganapati temple in Flushing, Queens, NY. He also built other temples in US and in India also – including arupadai veedu in Besant Nagar – all under the guidances/blessings of Mahaperiyava. An ardent devotee of Mahaperiyava, great service to hinduism is now with his ishta dheivam Lord Muruga.

Even in his last conversation regarding NJ manimandapam project, Shri Chettiar showed lot of interest, encouraged the idea, promised to support in whatever way he could. Although he is not here to support today, I am sure the blessings will be there with all of us.

Prof. Sundararaman had mentioned about Sri Azhakappan in his book “I lived with God’; I am reproducing the relevent portion from the Tamil translation :
நான் நியூயார்க்கில் இருந்த சமயத்தில்தான், அமெரிக்காவிலேயே, முதல் ஹிந்து கோயில் கட்டப்பட்டது. இதற்கு வேண்டிய தொடக்கப்பணிகளை ஆரம்பித்து, விடாமுயற்சியுடன் உழைத்தவர், யுனைடெட் நேஷன்சில் ஆஃஃபீஸராக இருந்த, திரு அழகப்பன் அவர்கள். இதில் என்னுடைய பங்கு என்பது, ராமாயணத்தில் வரும் அணிலினுடையது போலாகும். இந்தக் கோயில் திட்டத்துக்கு, முதலில் விளம்பரம் செய்தது, ஹிந்து ஸ்டூடென்ட்ஸ் அசோசியேஷந்தான். நானும், பெரியவாளுடைய பூர்வாசிரம சஹோதரர் திரு. சாம்பமூர்த்தி சாஸ்திரிகள் மூலமாக, பெரியவாளுக்கு ஒரு கடிதம் எழுதினேன். அதில், திரு அழகப்பனைப் பற்றியும், அவர் எடுத்துள்ள இந்த பெரிய திட்டத்திற்கு பெரியவாளோட ஆசியையும், ஆலோசனையையும் வேண்டியும், எழுதியிருந்தேன். 1970 மேமாதம் 4-ஆம் தேதி எழுதிய அந்தக் கடிதத்தின் நகலைப் பத்திரமாக வைத்திருக்கிறேன். அந்த வருஷம் கோடை காலத்தில், அழகப்பன், காஞ்சீபுரம் சென்று, பெரியவாளையும், ஸ்ரீ ஜெயேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளையும் சந்தித்து, ஆசி பெற்றார். நியூயார்க் திரும்பி வந்ததும், அழகப்பன் என்னிடம் கூறினார், “பெரியவாளை நான் ஒரு புராதனகாலத்து (CONSERVATIVE) சாமியாராக இருப்பார் என்று நினைத்தேன். சந்தித்தபின் அவர் ஒரு சீர்திருத்த சாமியாராக எனக்குத் தோன்றினார். நீங்கள் அந்தக் கடிதம் எழுதியதற்கு மிகவும் நன்றி.”
அப்பொழுது முதல், அழகப்பன் பெரியவாளின் ஒரு பெரிய பக்தராக ஆனார். பெரியவாள் மற்றும் ஸ்ரீ ஜெயேந்திர ஸ்வாமிகள் ஆகியோரின் ஆலோசனைப்படி, அவர் பல மத சம்பந்தமான திட்டங்களை முன் நின்று நடத்தினார். அவர் இப்பொழுது ஓய்வு பெற்று நியூயார்க்கில் வசித்து வருகிறார்.
It is sad that he followed Sundararaman mama so quickly. His services to Hinduism are invaluable. We can pay tribute to him by following his service without interruption, which I am sure all devotees of MahaPeriava are doing both in India and the U.S.

A man of principle , devotion espeicially to Mahaperiyaval. Let him rest in the Lotus feet of His Holiness.
