A Vidyarthi studying in Mutt’s Patasala in Thiuvidaimarudhur was asked to leave. He came directly to Periyava in Sivasthan. It is 1971.
Periyava asked him “Why you were asked to leave?”.
“I haven’t done anything Periyava! But still I was asked to leave”.
Periyava responded. “Enna panne?”
Slowly, Vidyarthi has said, “I made idly & ate.” There were about 50 devotees there. Periyava has enquired why should a Vidyarthi do it? Aren’t they providing idlies at all?
Periyava has also begun a lecture about ‘Idly’! How much rice is required? How much ‘ulundu’ is required? How long to get soaked?
Vidyarthi responded, “Enna vitutudungalen? Naa poiduren?
Periyava paused & said, “let it go. Now, you go to Nanganallur, Gowrikanthan, an auditor have started a new patasala but saying Vidyarthies weren’t available…”
Periyava continued “Don’t do any such thing there!” Vidyarthi was listening. “They themselves are providing idlies.” Vidyarthi joined & continued…

Usually on a Pradosham day, every Vidyarthi will go to Periyava for reciting Veda but not our Vidyarthi. Suddenly one day he had severe stomach ace & diarrhea. Drs medicine were coming out as such. His teacher approached Periyava & informed. Periyava heard that & put his hand on his stomach and did something. At the same time, our Vidyarthi became alright. When King Pandiya slapped the worker with ‘Perambu’ everyone felt the pain including the King himself. Same way when Periyava did it to himself, the. Vidyarthi became alright…King realized that the worker is nothing but the Parameswara. Same way, the Vidyarthi realized that Periyava is indeed Paramewara & not just a matathipathi.

One day, this Vidyarthi has approached Periyava for Periyava’s darshan. Sri Kantan Mama was on duty. Vidyarthi has forwarded his request for memory power. No response. 2nd time said again. No response. 3rd time. Periyava has asked THE quetion…
Sri Kantan Mama in a bothered voice (“Ennada ippadiyellam kekka vaikkira?)
By now, Vidyarthi knows not just ‘nothing should be hidden from Periyava’ BUT ‘nothing can be hidden from Periyava!’ So, his response was the boldest of the boldest!
“இல்லேன்னு சொல்லுங்கோ!” (“illai-nu sollungo!”) Yes! He has said what we hesitate to confess. What can be hidden from that Parameswara! He said, “பக்தி இல்லேன்னு சொல்லுங்கோ!”
Sri Kantan Mama did the usual cushioning between the visitors & Periyava “குழந்தை நல்லா படிச்சு வரணும்னு ஆசிர்வாதம் பண்ணுங்கோ…” (“Kuzhandhai nalla padichu varanum-nu asirvadham pannungo”)
Periyava, being the almighty asked Sri Mama “அவன் என்ன சொன்னான்? அதைச் சொல்லு!”. (“Avan enna sonnaan. Adhai sollu!”) Sri Kantan Mama told what the Vidyarthi has said. Only the heart with ‘nermai’ will get ‘Bhakthi’. Periyava knows but still his drilling questions continued…
“நேர்மையை விலக்கி பக்தியில் மூழ்குபவன் பாபி” (“Nermaiyai vilakki bhakthiyil moozhgubhavan paapi”) Sri Sivan Sar has told in the YPM. This Vidyarthi is a Viveki & a bhaktha. “Kannanppan Anbinai Kandapin…” says another Naayanar. True bhakthi will always think other’s bhakthi is greater.
So Periyava has asked the next question, “அவனுக்கு என்னிடத்தில் பக்தி இல்லேன்னா எதுக்கு எங்கிட்ட கேக்கிறான்?” (“avanukku ennidaththil bhakthi illenna edhukku engitta kekiraan?”)
Vidyarthi, “எல்லோரும் பெரியவாகிட்டக்கேக்கி ரா நானும் கேக்கிறேன்” (“ellorum Periyavakitta kekira naanum kekkiren”)
Periyava blessed. Then on he could read any books & get them recollected without fail, till today.
