Even Periyava not talking / responding to us when people went there for a problem was an anugraham too !!!

மரவக்காடு ராமஸ்வாமி ஐயருக்கு நாலு பெண்கள்; ரெண்டு பையன்கள். அதிக வருமானம் கிடையாது. வைதீக கார்யங்களில் கூடமாட ஒத்தாசை பண்ணுவதால் வரும் வருமானம், கைக்கும் வாய்க்கும் இழுபறியாக இருந்தது. நல்லவேளை! பூர்வீக வீடு இருந்ததால், வாடகை மிச்சம். கிராமத்தில் ஒரு தென்னந்தோப்பு இருந்தது. அதில் வரும் வருமானம் ஒரு வேளைச் சாப்பாட்டுக்கு போறும்.

பெரியவாளிடம் ரொம்ப பக்தி. ஒருநாள் தர்சனம் பண்ணப் போனார்.
“பொண்ணுக்கு 22 வயஸாறது..அடுத்தவளுக்கு இருவது; ரெண்டு பேருக்கும் ஒரே முஹூர்த்தத்துல கல்யாணம் பண்ணினா, செலவு கொறையும்..ஆனா, அது ஒண்ணும் ஒத்து வரலே; பெரியவளுக்கு வரன் அமைஞ்சிருக்கு. பணம் கொறைச்சலா இருந்ததுனால, தென்னந்தோப்பை கிரயம் பேசி, அட்வான்ஸ் வாங்கி அக்ரீமெண்ட் போட்டுட்டேன்…” தொண்டையை அடைத்த அழுகையை மென்று முழுங்கினார்.

“அண்ணாக்கு ரொம்ப கோவம்! அவரைக் கேக்கலையாம்; பரம்பரை சொத்துல அவருக்கும் உரிமை உண்டாம்! கோர்ட்டுக்குப் போய் ஸ்டே வாங்கிட்டார்….பெரியவா! எம்பொண்ணு கல்யாணம் நின்னு போய்டும் போல இருக்கு. கோர்ட்டுக்கு அலைய எனக்கு திராணி இல்லே; காசும் இல்லே..” அழுதார்.

பெரியவா அவரையே ஐந்து நிமிஷம் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். பின்னர் எதுவும் பேசாமல் ப்ரஸாதம் குடுத்தனுப்பி விட்டார்.

ராமஸ்வாமி ஐயருக்கு ரொம்ப ஏமாற்றம்!

“கவலைப்படாதே!”ன்னு ஒரு வார்த்தை கூட பெரியவா சொல்லலியே!”…. வெளியே வந்தவர், எதிரே வந்த ஒரு பாரிஷதரிடம் தன் ஆதங்கத்தை கொட்டித் தீர்த்துவிட்டார்.

“பெரியவா மனசு வெச்சா, என்ன வேணும்னாலும் பண்ணலாம்..எங்கண்ணாக்கு என்ன கொறைச்சல்? பெரிய வீடு, ஆள் படை, எப்போ பாத்தாலும் வெளியூர்தான்… நேர்ல பாக்கறது ரொம்ப கஷ்டம்.. அப்பா ஸ்ராத்தத்துக்கு கூட என்னைக் கூப்பிடறதில்லே! என்னால தனியா பண்ண முடியுமா? நான்….ரொம்ப கஷ்டப்படறவன்…கூடபĮ 1; பொறந்தவனுக்கு ஒதவி பண்ணக் கூடாதா?… இப்போ, ரொம்ப இக்கட்டுல என்னை மாட்டி விட்டுட்டார்…”

“அழாதீங்கோ மாமா! பெரியவாகிட்ட ஏன் இதெல்லாம் சொல்லப்..படாதா நீங்க?”

“சொன்னேனே! பெரியவா எல்லாத்தையும் கேட்டுண்டே இருந்தா…விபூதி ப்ரஸாதம் குடுத்தா..!”

பாரிஷதருக்கும் குழப்பமாக இருந்தது. “எல்லாருக்கும் ஏதாவது ஒரு வகையிலே ஆறுதல் சொல்லற பெரியவா, ராமஸ்வாமி ஐயரை மட்டும் ஏன் ஒதுக்கிட்டார்? இவர் ஏழையே தவிர, ரொம்ப நல்லவர்; பக்திமான்; அனுஷ்டானபரர்…. பெரியவாளுக்கே தெரியுமே?”…

“கவலைப்படாதீங்கோ மாமா! பெரியவா மேல பாரத்தைப் போட்டுட்டு மேல ஆகவேண்டிய கார்யங்களை பாருங்கோ!”

பாரிஷதர் ஆறுதல் கூறிவிட்டு நகர்ந்தார்.

ஒரு வாரம் கழித்து “உபன்யாஸ திலகம்” மார்கபந்து சாஸ்த்ரிகள், அரை அடி அகலத்துக்கு ஜரிகை போட்ட பட்டு வேஷ்டி, கைகளில் தடியான தங்கக் கங்கணம், கழுத்தில், விரலில் தங்கம் டாலடிக்க, பக்கத்தில் மனைவி ஒரு அடி அகலத்துக்கு ஜரிகை போட்ட பட்டுப் புடவையோடு, காது, மூக்கு, கழுத்து, கை எல்லாம் தங்கமும் வைரமுமாக மின்னிக் கொண்டு, ரெண்டு சிஷ்யர்கள் ஒரு பெரிய மூங்கில் தட்டில் விதவிதமான புஷ்பங்கள், பழங்களைத் தூக்கிக் கொண்டு வர, கம்பீரமாக காரில் வந்து இறங்கினார்.

பெரியவாளிடம் அவருக்கு எப்போதுமே ஒரு சலுகை உண்டு. ரொம்ப நேரம் அவரோடு பேசிக் கொண்டிருப்பார். சாயங்காலம் உபன்யாஸம் பண்ணச் சொல்லுவார். அன்றும் அதே மாதிரி அவர் உள்ளே நுழைந்ததும், பெரியவா அவர் வருவதை ஓரக்கண்ணால் பார்த்து விட்டார். ஆனால், அவரைக் கொஞ்சமும் சட்டை செய்யாமல் வேறு யார் யாருடனோ பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

பாரிஷதர்களுக்கும், தினமும் வரும் பக்தர்களுக்கும் ஒரே ஆச்சர்யம்! இன்னிக்கு என்ன இப்பிடி? இந்தியாவின் புகழ் பெற்ற பௌராணிகரை இன்னிக்கி பெரியவா இப்படி ஏன் காக்க வைக்கிறார்?

பாரிஷதர் பெரியவாளிடம் சத்தமாக “மார்கபந்து சாஸ்த்ரிகள் வந்திருக்கார்”…. என்றார்.

இதோ….பெரியவா சாஸ்த்ரிகள் பக்கம் திரும்புவது போல் இருந்ததும், பழக்கூடையை வைத்துவிட்டு நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணினார்கள்.

“திருப்பதிக்கு போய்ண்டிருக்கேன்…. ரெொம்ப அபூர்வமா, ஏழெட்டு நாள் ரெஸ்ட் கெடைச்சுது. உபன்யாஸம் ஒண்ணும் இல்லே; திருப்பதி ஸ்ரீநிவாஸ பெருமாளுக்கு கல்யாணம் பண்ணிப் பாக்கணும்..ன்னு சம்ஸாரம் ரொம்ப ஆசைப்பட்டா.. ஒடனே பொறப்பட்டுட்டேன்! பெரியவா அனுக்ரஹத்ல ஸ்ரீநிவாஸ கல்யாணம் அமோகமா நடக்கணும்…” எல்லார் காதிலும் விழவேண்டும் என்றே சற்று இரைந்து சொன்ன மாதிரி இருந்தது.

பெரியவா அவரை ஏறிட்டுக் கூட பார்க்கவில்லை; முகம் குடுத்துப் பேசவில்லை; அவர் கொண்டு வந்த பழத்தை தொடக்கூட இல்லை; மாறாக, தர்சனத்துக்கு வந்த பாட்டிகள், குடியானவர்கள் கூட எல்லாம் ரொம்ப உற்சாகமாக பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அரைமணி நேரத்துக்கு மேல் ஆயிற்று.

“பெரியவா…..சாஸ்த்ரிகள், …..” பாரிஷதர் நினைவூட்டினார்.

“ஹி ….ஹி …ஆமா….பெரியவா அனுக்ரஹம் பண்ணணும்… ஸ்ரீநிவாஸ கல்யாணம்…” அவர் முடிக்கும் முன் பெரியவா சற்று காரமாக “மொதல்ல, பத்மாவதி பரிணயம் பண்ணுங்கோ!…” என்று கூறி விட்டு விருட்டென்று எழுந்து உள்ளே போய்விட்டார். அத்தனை பேருக்கும் ஒரே அதிர்ச்சி! ஆச்சர்யம்! ஸ்ரீநிவாஸ கல்யாணம் என்றால், அது பத்மாவதி கல்யாணமுந்தானே! யார் போய் பெரியவாளிடம் விளக்கம் கேட்பது?
“திருப்பதில பெருமாளுக்கு நெறையப் பேர் கல்யாண உத்சவம் பண்றா…நீ திருச்சானூர்ல போய் பத்மாவதி தாயாருக்கு கல்யாண உத்சவம் பண்ணு”..ன்னு சொல்றாரா?

“பெரியவா என்ன மாதிரி உத்தரவு போட்டுட்டுப் போயிருக்கார்? செரியா புரியலியே!” சாஸ்த்ரிகள் முகத்தில் ஒரு லிட்டர் அசடு வழிந்தது! யோசிக்க யோசிக்க…..அந்த இடத்தின் சாந்நித்ய விசேஷம்….முதுகில் பளீரென்று சாட்டையால் அடித்த மாதிரி உணர்ந்தார்! பெரியவா இருந்த இடத்துக்கு ஒரு நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணிவிட்டு போய்விட்டார்.

ரெண்டு மாசம் கழித்து, ராமஸ்வாமி ஐயர் முகமெல்லாம் புன்னகையோடு பூ, பழம் இத்யாதியோடு ஒரு கல்யாணப் பத்திரிகையும் கூட வைத்து, பெரியவாளிடம் சமர்ப்பித்தார். பெரியவா பத்திரிகையை கையில் எடுத்ததும்,

“அண்ணாவே கல்யாண செலவு முழுக்க ஏத்துண்டுட்டார்! “கன்யாதானம் பண்ணறது மட்டுந்தான் ஒன்னோட பொறுப்பு! மத்ததெல்லாம் எங்கிட்ட விட்டுடு”..ன்னுட்டார். தென்னந்தோப்பு கேஸை வாபஸ் வாங்கிண்டுட்டார்…. என்னோட கடைசிப் பையனுக்கு பன்னண்டு வயசாறது…தன்னோட செலவுலேயே பூணூல் போட்டு, தங்கிட்டயே சிஷ்யனா வெச்சுக்கறேன்..ன்னு ; சொல்லிட்டார் பெரியவா!… …..அண்ணா, இவ்வளவு அனுகூலமா மாறுவார்…ன்னு, நான் கனவுல கூட நெனைச்சதில்லே பெரியவா…” கண்களில் கண்ணீர் வழிந்தோட நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணினார்.

பெரியவா சிரித்துக் கொண்டே “கொழந்தை தீர்க்க சுமங்கலியா இருப்பா! க்ஷேமமா இரு” என்று ஆசீர்வாதம் பண்ணினார்.
ராமஸ்வாமி ஐயர் மனஸ் முழுக்க சந்தோஷம், பக்தி, பெரியவாளின் கருணை எல்லாவற்றையும் தாங்க முடியாமல் தாங்கிக் கொண்டு வெளியே வந்தார்…

எதிரே, முன்பு சந்தித்த அதே பாரிஷதர்!

“என்ன மாமா? கல்யாண பத்திரிகை? பொண்ணுக்கு கல்யாணமா? கையில காலணா இல்லேன்னு ரொம்ப கவலைப்பட்டேளே! ” என்று கேட்டுக் கொண்டே அவர் நீட்டின பத்திரிகையை பிரித்துப் பார்த்தார் பாரிஷதர்.

“…..மரவக்காடு ஜகதீஸ்வர சாஸ்த்ரிகள் பௌத்ரியும், என் இளைய சஹோதரன் சிரஞ்சீவி ராமஸ்வாமி சாஸ்த்ரிகளின் ஸீமந்த புத்ரியுமான சௌபாக்யவதி பத்மாவதியை….என்று ஆரம்பித்து, இங்ஙனம் விதேயன் மார்கபந்து சாஸ்த்ரிகள்…”

பாரிஷதரின் கால்கள் தரையில் வேர்விட்டன!

“நீ அவஸ்யம் கல்யாணத்துக்கு வரணும்… அண்ணா பொறுப்புல
நடக்கறது…ஒங்களையெல்லாம் பார்த்தா, அண்ணா ரொம்ப சந்தோஷப் படுவார்…”

தலையை அசைத்து விட்டு உள்ளே போய்விட்டார்.

இரண்டு மாசம் முன்பு “மொதல்ல பத்மாவதி பரிணயம் பண்ணுங்கோ!” என்று கோபமாக பெரியவா சொன்னது காதில் ஒலித்தது!

“எந்த பத்மாவதி? திருச்சானூர் பத்மாவதியா? மரவக்காடு
பத்மாவதியா?…ராமஸ்வாமி ஐயரின் பெண் பெயர் பத்மாவதி என்பதை பெரியவாளிடம் யார் சொன்னது?”

திருச்சானூர் பத்மாவதி நித்யகல்யாணி! அவளுக்கு நித்யம் கல்யாணம்! ஆனால், இந்த “மரவக்காடு பத்மாவதி” மாதிரி எத்தனை ஏழைப் பெண்கள் கல்யாணத்துக்கு வழி இல்லாமல் தவித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்.

கல்யாணங்களுக்கு ஆகும் அனாவச்ய ஆடம்பர செலவுகளை நாம் குறைத்துக் கொண்டு மீதியை எத்தனையோ உபயோகமானதாக செலவழிக்கலாமே! அந்த புத்தியை பெரியவா நமக்கு அருளட்டும்

Modalla Padmavathi Pariyanam paNNungo !

Maravakkadu Ramaswami Iyer had four daughters and two sons. He did not have a good income. He would lend his assistance in Vedic ceremonies and was leading his life with the income he got from this; it was a hand to mouth existence. But the good thing was that since he stayed in his ancestral home, he did not have to pay rent. He had a plot of coconut grove. They got enough money from it for one square meal a day.

He had immense bhakthi in Periyava. One day he went to take His Darshan. “My eldest daughter is 22 years old; the next one is 20. If I marry both off in a single Muhurtham, I can save on some expenses. But it is not working out like that. An alliance has come thru for the eldest one. Since I don’t have enough money, I have come to an agreement for selling off my coconut grove and have taken advance amount”, he was choking and fought back tears.

“My elder brother is very angry with me. He says I did not consult him and that he also has a share in the ancestral property. He has gone to court and has obtained a stay order, Periyava. Now, it looks like my daughter’s wedding will be cancelled. I neither have the strength nor the money to fight a case in court”, he was crying now.

Periyava kept looking at him for five minutes. Without saying anything to him, He just gave him Prasadam and sent him on his way.

Ramaswami Iyer was totally disappointed.

“Periyava did not even say ‘Don’t worry’”, he cried his heart out in front of a Parishathar he met on his way out.

“If He wants, Periyava can do anything. What more does my brother want ? He has a huge house, servants, keeps going on tours..very difficult to meet him in person. He does not even invite me for Father’s Sraddham ! Can i afford to do it on my own ? I’m in a lot of financial trouble. Can he not help his own brother ? He has now put me in a big fix”

“Don’t cry, mama. Why did you not tell all this to Periyava ?”
“I did tell him ! He listened to me and gave me just Vibhuthi Prasadam” !

The Parishathar was also confused. “Periyava usually gives some kind of advice to everybody; why did He not do the same for Ramaswami Iyer ? He was poor, yes; but a good man – devoted and one who practices all Anushtanams. Periyava knows all this….”

“Don’t worry mama. Just put your entire burden on Periyava and go on with your duties!”, the Parishathar consoled him and walked away.

A week later. Margabandhu Sastrigal, who was known as ‘Upanyasa Tilakam’ arrived there along with his wife and 2 ‘Shishyas’ in his car. His silk dhoti had 6 inches ‘Jarigai’, his hand had a thick gold bracelet. He was wearing glittering gold chains and rings. His wife was decked in a silk saree with 12 inches ‘Jarigai’. She had gold and diamonds all over her neck, nose, hands and ears. They were carrying a bamboo plate full of a variety of flowers and fruits.

He had some influence with Periyava. Periyava would speak with him for long durations of time. Periyava would ask him to do Upanyasam in the evening. That day, Periyava noticed their arrival. But He never gave them any attention and was speaking with somebody else present there.

The Parishathars and the regular devotees were surprised. How come Periyava is making this famous Upanyasakar wait like this ?

The Parishathar announced loudly to Periyava “Margabandu Sastrigal has come”.
Just when it looked as if Periyava would turn towards him, Margabandu Sastrigal, placed the plate of fruits and flowers down and did a Namaskaram to Periyava.

“I had been to Tirupathi. After a long time, I got a break of 7-8 days; did not have any Upanyasam programme. My wife expressed her desire to perform Kalyanam to Srinivasa Perumal. I started immediately. By Periyava’s Anugraham, Srinivasa Kalyanam should go off well”, he spoke a little louder than was needed. It appeared as if he wanted everybody assembled there to hear him.

Periyava did not even look at him, nor did He touch the fruits that he had brought. Instead he was speaking animatedly with the grandmas and farmers who had come for Darshan. More than 30 minutes went by like this.

“Periyava….Sastrigal,….”, the Parishathar tried to remind Periyava gently.
“Hee…Hee…Hee, Periyava should bless…Srinivasa Kalyanam…”
Before he could complete, “First do Padmavathi Kalyanam”, Periyava said curtly, got up suddenly and went inside. Everybody there was shocked. After all, Srinivasa Kalyanam does mean Padmavathi Kalyanam.
Who can go to Periyava to ask for clarifications ?

There are many people to do Srinivasa Kalyanam for Perumal in Tirupathi; you go to Tiruchanur and perform Kalyana Utsavam to Padmavathi Thayar – is that what Periyava meant ?

“Periyava has given an order like this and has gone inside. I don’t understand completely”. Sastrigal had a sheepish expression on his face. Then, as if by magic, his facial expression revealed that he had suddenly understood what Periyava said. He did a Namaskaram to the place where Periyava was sitting and left.

2 months later, Ramaswami Iyer came there carrying flowers, fruits and other materials along with a wedding invitation card and submitted all these to Periyava. His face was full of smiles. As Periyava picked up the invitation letter, Ramaswami Iyer spoke:

“My brother has taken upon himself the entire cost of the wedding ! ‘Doing the Kanyadaanam alone is your resonsibility, leave everything else to me’, he said. He took back the case about the coconut grove also. My youngest son is 11 years old. He said he will perform the Upanayanam for him at his expense and will keep him as his Shishyan, Periyava”.

“I never imagined even in my wildest dreams that my brother will change like this, Periyava”, he fell at Periyava’s feet with tears in his eyes.

Periyaa smiled and said, “Your child will be a Dheerga Sumangali. Be happy !” and blessed him.

Ramaswami Iyer was extremely happy. He came out full of gratitude to Periyava.
He met the same Parishathar on his way out.

“Hello mama, wedding invitation ? Is your daughter getting married ? You were worried that you did not have enough money !”, saying this he accepted the wedding invitation that Ramaswami Iyer extended to him.

The invitation read, “….Maravakkadu Jagadeeshwara Sastrigal’s son and my younger brother Chiranjeevi Ramaswami Sastrigal’s daughter Padmavathi….Yours truly Margabandu Sastrigal”

The Parishathar stood there rooted to the spot !

“You should definitely come to the wedding. My brother is taking care of everything. My brother will be very happy to see you all”

The Parishathar just nodded and went inside.
Periyava’s curt order “First do Padmavathi Kalyanam”, resonated in his ears.

“Which Padvathi ? Tiruchanur Padmavathi or Maravakkadu Padmavathi ? How did Periyava know that Ramaswami Iyer’s daughter’s name is Padmavathi ?”

Tiruchanur Padmavathi is a ‘NithyaKalyani’. She celebrates Her wedding everyday ! But a lot girls like this Maravakkadu Padmavathi are stuggling because their parents do not have funds for their weddings.

We can conduct simple weddings and use the money instead for good causes. Let Periyava give us the good sense to put this in practice.
