“பெரியவா திடீரென்று ஒரு சின்ன குழந்தையின் துள்ளலோடு பாதுகையை போட்டுக்கொண்டு கால் மாற்றி மாற்றி குடுத்த தர்சனம்”

ஒருநாள் மடத்தில் எக்கச்சக்க கூட்டம்! பெரியவாளுடைய பரம பக்தரான ராமலிங்க பட் வரிசையில் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார். பக்கத்தில் வேதமூர்த்தி என்ற பக்தரும் இருந்தார். ராமலிங்க பட்டின் கைகளில் பட்டுத் துணியால் போர்த்திய ஒரு பெரிய தாம்பாளம் எல்லாருடைய கவனத்தையும் ஈர்த்தது. பட் மெதுவாக வேதமூர்த்தியிடம்,

“எனக்கு ஒரு ஹெல்ப் பண்ண முடியுமா?”

“சொல்லுங்கோ பட்…. என்ன வேணும்?”

“கையில வெச்சிண்டு இருக்கறதை பெரியவாட்ட குடுத்து ஆசீர்வாதம் பண்ணி வாங்கணும்….ரொம்ப கூட்டமா இருக்கு…ஒங்களுக்கு யாரையாவது தெரியுமா? இதை பெரியவாட்ட குடுக்கறதுக்கு….”

“ரொம்ப கூட்டந்தான்…பாக்கலாம் யாராவது தெரிஞ்சவா இருக்காளான்னு…சரி, பட்டுத்துணி போத்தி என்ன கொண்டு வந்திருக்கேள் ?…”

“இது…பெரியவாளுக்கு பாதுகைகள் ரெண்டு ஜோடி பண்ணிண்டு வந்திருக்கேன். ஓரிக்கையில பெரியவாளுக்கு கோவில் கட்டப்போறா இல்லியா..அதுக்கு அவரோட பாதங்கள்ள போட்டுண்ட பாதுகையை அங்கே ப்ரதிஷ்டைக்கு குடுக்கலாம்ன்னு கொண்டு வந்திருக்கேன். இன்னொரு ஜோடி எங்காத்துல வெச்சு பூஜை பண்ணறதுக்கு.”

” ஒரிக்கைல கோவில் டிரஸ்டிகிட்ட பர்மிஷன் வாங்கிண்டுதானே இந்த பாதுகைகள பண்ணிண்டு வந்தேள்?..” வேதமூர்த்தி அனாயாசமாக ஒரு குண்டைத் தூக்கி போட்டார்.

“பர்மிஷனா!…எனக்கு அதுமாதிரி யார்கிட்டயும் கேக்கலியே! அப்டி கேக்கணும்னு என் மனசுக்கு தோணவே இல்லியே!..” கலவரமடைந்தார் பட். “என்னவோ என்னோட மனசுக்கு பட்டதை செஞ்சிருக்கேன். எங்கம்மா சமீபத்ல சுமங்கலியா காலமானா….அவாளோட சொத்தா கடைசி வரைக்கும் போட்டுண்டு இருந்த எட்டு பவுன் நகைகளையும், இந்த பாதுகையோட பெரியவா கைங்கர்யத்துக்கு சமர்ப்பிக்கணும்னு ரொம்ப ஆசையா இருந்தது.. மைசூர்ல நல்ல ஒசந்த சந்தன கட்டை வாங்கி, நல்ல ஆசாரிகிட்ட குடுத்து, ரொம்ப சுத்தபத்தமா ரெண்டு செட் பாதுகையும் பண்ணிண்டு வந்திருக்கேன்……”

“ஸ்வாமி……நீங்க சொல்றது ரொம்ப நல்ல கார்யம். ஆனா, ஒருவேளை மடத்ல இதை ஏத்துக்கலேன்னா?…” வேதமூர்த்தி கேட்ட க்ஷணமே நொறுங்கிப் போனார் பட். …”பகவானே! ஒருவேளை பர்மிஷன் வாங்காம பண்ணிண்டு வந்தது தப்போ?…” உண்மையில் யாருமே இல்லாத போது பெரியவாளிடம் பாதுகைகளை குடுத்து ஆசீர்வாதம் வாங்கலாம் என்ற எண்ணத்தோடுதான் வந்தார். என்னவோ, ஒரு விசேஷமோ, லீவு நாளோ இல்லாதபோதும் அன்று மடத்தில் சொல்லிமுடியாத கூட்டம்!

வேதமூர்த்தியின் முகம் திடீரென்று ப்ரகாசமானது! “சித்த இருங்கோ பட்! அதோ பெரியவாகிட்ட சந்த்ரான்னு ஒர்த்தர் கைங்கர்யம் பண்றார். அவரைக் கூப்ட்டு விஷயத்தை சொல்லுவோம். அப்புறம் பெரியவா சித்தம்.” என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு, கியூவிலிருந்து அடிக்கடி சந்த்ரா தன்னை பார்க்கும்படி வெளியே எட்டி எட்டி பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார். பெரியவாளோ அசைவற்று அசலமான ப்ரம்மமாக அமர்ந்திருந்தார். உடல்நிலை அவ்வளவு சரியாக இல்லாத நேரம். பார்வையும் குறைந்திருந்தது. யாராவது எதிரில் வந்து இன்னார் என்று சொல்லிக்கொண்டு நின்றால், கண்களை சுருக்கிக்கொண்டு பார்ப்பார். காதும் சரியாக கேட்கவில்லை. சந்த்ராதான் தன்னுடைய வெண்கலக் குரலில் பெரியவாளிடம் யார் வந்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதை சொல்லிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அவருடைய செயல் எல்லாம் டமார், டுமீர்தான்! அவரிடம் யாரும் ரகசியமே சொல்லிவிட முடியாது! அவருக்கும் மெதுவாகவே பேச வராது!

இதோ! சந்த்ரா வேதமூர்த்தியைப் பார்த்துவிட்டார். “கூட்டமோ திமிலோகப்படறது! இதுல பட் கொண்டுவந்திருக்கற பாதுகைக்கு விளக்கம் குடுத்து சந்திராவுக்கு புரிய வைத்துவிடுவோம்…அவர் பெரியவாட்ட சொல்லிட்டாப் போறும்”….என்று எண்ணி வேதமூர்த்தி சந்திராவை அருகில் வர சைகை பண்ணினார்.

“சொல்லுங்கோ மாமா” என்ற சந்திராவிடம் சுருக்கமாக விஷயத்தை சொன்னார் வேதமூர்த்தி.

“இதானா விஷயம்! குடுங்கோ…மாமா அந்த பாதுகைகளை!” என்று பாதுகைகளையும், எட்டு பவுன் நகைகளையும் வாங்கிக்கொண்டு தன் தலைமீது வைத்துக்கொண்டு பெரியவாளிடம் போய்விட்டார். கல்யாணம், வேலை, வ்யாதி என்று பெரியவா காதில் போட்டுக்கொண்டே, வந்தவர்களுக்கு ப்ரசாதத்தை குடுத்துக்கொண்டே சரியான க்ஷணத்தை எதிர்பார்த்தார் சந்த்ரா. ஒரு க்ஷணம் அடுத்து வந்த கூட்டத்தை காத்திருக்கும்படி சொல்லிவிட்டு, பெரியவாளிடம் விஷயத்தை சொன்னார். பட்டும், வேதமூர்தியும் மூச்சைப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு பெரியவாளின் திருமுகத்தையே பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். அவர் முகத்தில் ஒரு புன்னகை! உடனே சந்த்ரா எல்லாருக்குமாக ஒரு செய்தியை சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்தார்…

“கொஞ்சம் எல்லாரும் அமைதியா இருங்கோ….பெரியவா கார்யமா, அவாளோட அனுக்ரகத்தோட ஒரு சேதி சொல்லப்போறேன்..மஹா பெரியவாளுக்கு ஒரிக்கைல கோவில் கட்டறதுக்கு ப்ரதோஷம் மாமாவும் இன்னும் சில பக்தாளும் முனைப்பா இருக்கா..அந்த கோவில்ல ப்ரதிஷ்டை பண்ணனும்னு ஆசைப்பட்டு ஒரு பக்தர் ஒரு ஜோடி பாதுகைகளை கொண்டு வந்திருக்கார். அவர் பேரு ராமலிங்க பட். அவா அம்மா காலமாற வரைக்கும் போட்டுண்டு இருந்த எட்டு பவுன் செயினையும் கோவில் பணிக்காக குடுத்துறதா இருக்கார்…இது எல்லாத்தையும் பெரியவாளோட சந்நிதியில சமர்ப்பிக்கறேன்…” என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு பாதுகைகளை பெரியவா முன்னிலையில் வைத்தார். நகையை கங்கா ஜலத்தில் அலம்பிவிட்டு ஒரு மூங்கில்தட்டில் வைத்தார். பெரியவா தன் பார்வையால் கூட்டத்தில் துழாவி, ராமலிங்க பட்டை முன்னால் வருமாறு அழைத்தார்.

அவருடைய தாயார் நகையை தன் வயிற்றின் மேல் வைத்துக்கொண்டார். திருப்பாதுகைகளை தன் திருவடிகளில் அணிந்து கொண்டார். அதை குனிந்து பார்த்துவிட்டு குழந்தையைப் போல் சந்தோஷப்பட்டுக்கொண்டார். பிறகு, இடது காலைத்தூக்கி வலது தொடையின் மேல் போட்டுக்கொண்டும், மறுபடி வலது காலைத்தூக்கி இடது தொடையில் போட்டுக்கொண்டும் நடராஜரை போல் எல்லாருக்கும் காக்ஷி குடுத்தார். அவர் முகத்திலோ ஒரே குஷி! இப்படி நான்கு முறை கால்களை மாறி மாறிப்போட்டு ஏக அனுக்ரஹம்! உடல்நிலை சரியில்லாதிருந்த பெரியவா திடீரென்று ஒரு சின்ன குழந்தையின் துள்ளலோடு பாதுகையை போட்டுக்கொண்டு கால் மாற்றி மாற்றி குடுத்த தர்சனம் பக்தர்களிடையே பரவசத்தை உண்டு பண்ணியது. எங்கும் “ஹர ஹர சங்கர; ஜய ஜய சங்கர” கோஷம் !!

இரண்டாவது செட் பாதுகைகளை தன் பாதங்களில் அணிந்து கொண்டு பின்பு கழற்றி விட்டார். நான்கு முறை போட்டுக்கொண்ட பாதுகைகள்தான் இப்போது ஓரிக்கையில் ப்ரதிஷ்டையாகி இருக்கிறது.

ராமலிங்க பட் பெரியவாளின் இந்த அபரிமிதமான ப்ரேமையில் திக்கு முக்காடித்தான் போனார். இப்போது இந்த பாதுகையை ப்ரதோஷம் மாமாவிடம் முதலில் ஒப்படைக்கவேண்டும்.ஸ்ரீமடத்திலிருந்து ஒரு பக்தர் வில்லிலிருந்து புறப்பட்ட அம்பாக நேரே ப்ரதோஷம் மாமாவிடம் போய் பாதுகை விஷயத்தை சொல்லி, அப்பாதுகைகள் அவரைத் தேடி வந்துகொண்டிருப்பதையும் கூறினார். அவர் அடைந்த சந்தோஷத்துக்கு அளவே இல்லை. உடனே வாசலில் மெழுகி கோலமிட்டு, பூஜையறையில் விளக்கேற்றி, வாசலில் பூர்ணகும்ப மரியாதையோடு தயாரானார் பெரியவாளை [பாதுகையை] வரவேற்க!

மஹா பக்தர்கள் கூடியதால் பாதுகைக்கு கண்ணீரால் அபிஷேகம் ஆனது. இன்றும் ஓரிக்கையில் பெரியவா அப்பாதுகை மூலமாக அனுக்ரஹம் செய்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார். எப்படி சிதம்பரம் என்றால் நந்தனாரோ, ராமன் என்றால் ஆஞ்சனேயஸ்வாமியோ, குருவாயூரப்பன் என்றால் பூந்தானமோ, அப்படி பெரியவா என்றால் ப்ரதோஷம் மாமா நம் நினைவிற்கு வருகிறார்.

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara.

There was a huge crowd at the SriMatam that day ! Periyava’s ardent devotee Ramalinga Bhat was standing in the line. With him was another devotee – Vedamurthy. A big plate covered by a silk cloth that Ramalinga Bhat carried in his hands was the center of all attention.

Bhat said softly to Vedamurthy “Can you please do me a favour ?”

“Sure Bhat, tell me what you want”

“I need go give what I’m carrying to Periyava and get His blessings….it is extremely crowded….do you know anybody here ? Need this given to Periyava somehow….”

“It is indeed very crowded…let’s see if I can identify somebody I know. In any case, what is there under the silk cloth”

“I have had two pairs of Padhukas made for Periyava. You know that there is a temple coming up for Periyava in Orikkai, right ? I wanted to give a pair of Padhukas that Periyava has worn, for Prathishtai there. Another pair is for keeping in my house and doing Pooja”

“You have taken permission from the temple trustees before getting them done, right ?”, Vedamurthy, dropped a bombshell by this casual question.

“Permission ? I have not approached anybody for this ! It did not even occur to me !”, Bhat panicked. “I have done just what came to my mind. My mother recently passed away as a Sumangali..I wanted very much to donate towards Periyava Kaingaryam, along with these Padhukas, the 8 ‘Pavun’ gold ornament that she wore till the very end…I purchased high quality sandalwood in Mysore, gave it to a good Achari, and have got it made in a ‘Madi’ way”

“Swami…what you are saying is a very good thing. But in case, it is not accepted at the SriMatam…?”, Bhat was shattered the moment Vedamurthy uttered these words.
“Oh God, did I commit a blunder by not taking permission in advance?”
He really wanted to give the Padhukas and take His blessings when there wasn’t anybody around. But it wasn’t a festival day or a holiday that day; but for some reason it was really crowded at the SriMatam that day.

Vedamurthy’s face suddenly lit up. “Wait a minute, Bhat. It is Chandra who is doing Kaingaryam to Periyava there. Let’s call him and tell him about all this. After that, let’s leave it entirely to Periyava.” Saying so, he stepped out of the line in order to catch Chandra’s eye and stepped back in. He kept doing this again and again. Periyava, the Brahmam that He was, was sitting without moving a muscle. It was a time when His health was not all that good. His eyesight was also failing. If somebody came and stood in front of Him announcing himself, He would make an effort trying to see by narrowing down His eyes. His hearing was also failing. Chandra in his baritone voice would announce to Periyava who had come. There was nothing discreet about anything that Chandra said or did ! Nobody could tell a secret to Chandra and expect him to keep it ! He just did not know to speak softly !

Just then, Chandra noticed Vedamurthy. “The crowd is too much. Let me just try to explain to Chandra about the Padhukas that Bhat has brought…it will be enough if he informs Periyava about it”, thought Vedamurthy and motioned to Chandra to come near.

“Tell me, mama”, Chandra came near and said. Vedamurthy quickly summarized the task on hand.
“Oh, is that all ! Hand me those Padhukas !”, Chandra took the Padhukas and the ornament, kept them on his head and went to Periyava. Amidst the numerous devotees’ supplications of marriage, job requests, ailments that he conveyed to Periyava and handing back Prasadams, he waited for an opportune time. After having told the next group of devotees to wait for a bit, he told about the Padhukas to Periyava. Bhat and Vedamurthy kept looking at Periyava’s face with bated breath. A smile on His face ! Immediately, Chandra started to make an announcement.

“Silence, please ! With His Anugraham, I’m going to make an annoucement about a ‘Periyava Kaaryam’. Pradosham mama and a few others are engaged in building a temple for Periyava in Orikkai. To install Padhukas there, a devotee has brought a pair here. His name is Ramalinga Bhat. He also wants to donate to the temple an 8 ‘Pavun’ gold ornament which his mother used to wear till her last breath. I’m offering all this in Periyava’s Sannidhi”, said Chandra and kept them in front of Periyava. After washing the gold ornament in Ganges water, he placed it in a bamboo plate. Periyava with just His glance, scoured over the crowd and indicated Ramalinga Bhat to come in front.

He placed Bhat’s mother’s necklace on His stomach. He wore the Padhukas on His holy Feet. He bent down, looked at them and seemed as happy as a child. Then, He lifted His left leg and placed it on His right thigh; thereafter, he lifted His right leg and placed it on His left thigh and gave a Nataraja Darshan to everybody there. His face shone with happiness. He crossed and recrossed His legs four times ! Even though Periyava’s health was not all that good then, the devotees were ecstatic seeing Periyava donning the Padhukas and giving the Darshan of crossing and recrossing His legs with the alacrity of a small child !
Chants of ‘Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara’ reverberated everywhere.

He donned the second set of Padhukas and kept them aside. The set of Padhukas which he wore 4 times is what has been installed in Orikkai.

Ramalinga Bhat was choked in Periyava’s display of uninhibited affection. I now need to now immediately hand over these Padhukas to Pradosham mama. Like an arrow released from a bow, another devotee from the SriMatam rushed to Pradosham mama, told him all about the Padhukas and informed him that these Padhukas were now on their way. The joy that he experienced when he heard all this could not be measured. Immediately, the front courtyard was washed with water, Kolam drawn, lamp lit in the Pujai room and Pradosham mama got ready with PoornaKumbham to welcome Periyava (the Padhukas).

A lot of devotees gathered there and the Padhukas were subjected to ‘Kaneer Abhishekam’. Even to this day, Periyava is giving Anugraham through these Padhukas. Like how Nandanars are to Chidambaram, Anjaneya Swami is to Lord Rama, Poondanam is to Guruvayoorappan, similarly Pradosham mama comes to our mind when we talk of Periyava.
