Devi Mahatmyam Reading Procedure

Goddess-Durga-Devi

Devi Mahatmyam (Durga Saptashati or Chandi Path) is a powerful text dedicated to Goddess Shakti. The reading procedure of Devi Saptashati is given here in detail version. Many devotees are confused on how to recite this powerful text – on which day, which adhyaya (chapter) needs to be chanted..

There are two methods to start reading Devi Mahatmym – Trayangam and Navangam.

Trayangam is a method in which we need to chant three prayers – Devi Kavacham, Argala Stotram and Devi Keelakam followed by Navakshari Mantram.

Navangam is a method for which nine prayers are recited prior of starting reading the book. Navangam stotrams are: Devi Nyasa, Devi Avahana, Devi Namani, Argala Stotram, Keelaka Stotram, Devi Hrudaya, Dhala, Devi Dhyana and Devi Kavacha.

As per the prescribed methods in ancient scriptures, Devi Mahatmya should be read in one sitting. After finishing the recital of Devi Mahatmya, one should chant the Devi Suktam (slokas 7 to 36 of Chapter 8).

Devi Saptashati Parayana in 3 days & 7 days

Apart from one sitting recital, devotees read Devi mahatmya for three consecutive days: Prathama Charitra or 1st Chapter on first day, Madhyama Charitra (2, 3, 4 chapters) on 2nd day, and Uttama Charitra (5-13 chapters) on third day.

Some devotees also read Devi Mahatmya in 7 days. They chant 1st Chapter on first day, 2-3 chapters on 2nd day, 4th chapter on 3rd day, 5-8 chapters on 4th day, 9-10 chapters on 5th day, 11th chapter on 6th day and 12-13 chapters on 7th day.

Each chapter should be read in single sitting. Due to any reason, Parayana is stopped in between a chapter; the whole chapter should be read again.

The order of reciting Durga Saptashati Parayana daily is: Trayanga Mantra, Devi Mahatmya text followed by Devi Suktam.

Many devotees read Durga Saptashati during Navratri Durga Puja 9/10 days.. Here is the procedure to read Devi Mahatmyam during Navratri

How to read Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmyam) during Navratri festival

1st day: Chapter 1 (Madhu kaitabha samhaaram)

2nd day: Chapter 2, 3 and 4 (Mahishhasura samhaara)

3rd day: Chapter 5 and 6 (Dhuumralochana vadha)

4th day: Chapter 7 (Chanda Munda vadha)

5th day: Chapter 8 (Rakta biija samhaara)

6th day: Chapter 9 and 10 (Shumbha Nishumbha vadha)

7th day: Chapter 11 (Praise of Narayani)

8th day: Chapter 12 (Phalastuti – reciting merits or benefits)

9th day: Chapter 13 (Blessings to Suratha and the Merchant)

10th day: Chapter 14 (Aparadha Kshamaprarthana) on 10th day

You can also complete the recital on 9th day by chanting Devi Aparadha Kshama Prarthana Stotram on 9th day itself.

You should read Siddha Kunjika Stotram after completing the recital of every chapter.

You believe me or not after doing Saptasati on regular basis my major problems are resolved. You need to believe god you will get solution for every thing there is nothing impossible thing if you believe ma durga .

  4. If we recite Durga Saptashati over more than 1 day (e.g. over 3 days, 7 days or 9 days), should the Trayang Mantra be recited on every single day or only on the first day? Similarly, should the Devi Suktam be recited after the paath everyday or only on the last day? I would be really grateful if someone knowledgable person can answer please. Thank you.

  5. Can I read the English translation or do I need to read the Sanskrit translation in English..pl guide

  6. I have a question, it says the order of reading is
The order of reciting Durga Saptashati Parayana daily is: Trayanga Mantra, Devi Mahatmya text followed by Devi Suktam.
Now Trayangna mantra means chant three prayers – Devi Kavacham, Argala Stotram and Devi Keelakam followed by Navakshari Mantram.
I can’t find Navakshari Mantram in the book, can you tell me if it has another name.

Also when you do Devi Suktam at the end – is it both Vedokt Tanrisutra and Tantrokt Ratrisutra? if not what chapter /name it is?

Also do we read Shri DugraAshto Naam Stotra also daily before Devi Kavacham?

  7. Hello,
Is it true that Durga Saptashati should be read only after getting upadesham from a Guru? If so, can you please let me know the upadesham procedure?

    Thanks,
    Neha

    • Hi Neha

To answer your question to me Not necessary. If you feel like reading Durga Saptshati to me is the sign of Mataji’s wishes to take you in spirituality path. My experience is five years ago I came across to this Durga Saptshati and during Navratri Just felt like to recite it. I tried to ask few People as well as google it but i was more confused then Getting answer. I just followed my heart and started reading without going into what to do first and next or how to do right or wrong. During these five years I had lots of good experience of it and even today i have no Guru and i just read it in every Navratri as well as many days I feel like. So my advice it follow your heart and things will fall into place.

      • Dear Smt Nirmala,

Wrong answer. Without chandi (Navakshari) upadesam, one is not supposed to chant Devi mahathmiyam. This is the rule. As per my guru, he will not allow us to read Devi mahatmiyam unless we finish certain lakhs of japam of navakshari. Today things have diluted a lot! One should approach a guru and wait if you dont find the proper guru. In the meantime, do ashtotra or Sahasra namavali of Durga, which is perfectly fine for all. Next question normally asked is “Durga is like our mom – would she ever punish her own children?” – that argument is not valid at all. There are certain rules – and you or I dont have the authority to break it or encourage others breaking the rules.

As a web master and as a Devi upasaka who comes from Guhananda mandali, which is one of the most reputed mandalis, I am obligated to guide people wherever possible – not that I know all – I have heard the right way of doing certain things. Regardless of whether that answer pleases everyone or not, one should know the rules.

I hope you take this response in the constructive way.

        Mahesh

      • Dear Mahesh, You may be right. It is a faith, and I don’t argue with it. You are lucky that you have found the right Guru, but I haven’t. Now the question of right Guru, it is hard to decide who is the right one. Many years in my search, I haven’t come across one whom I can say yes he or she is my Guru.(it doesn’t mean there isn’t one)So wasting time in searching for Guru, I decided to follow what my heart says and my intention of Bhakti. If the wait for real Guru as you mentioned I am not sure in my lifetime I may be able to do Bhakti. Yes, there should be some discipline but sometimes love overpower the discipline. ( Meera, Narsayo and few more are examples) I believe that five minutes with love and concentrated Bhakti reaches to God than reciting 1000 names for hours with mind somewhere else.
I am not misleading anybody. What I do and felt I just expressed it. Ever since i have recited Durga Saptshati so far, I have unique experiences and good results. It’s too long to write here, but at one point actually, Matarani came to my home to save my husband. I do Ganesh Prayer, Kunjika stotram and then Durga Saptshati.

      • I respect your views. I still disagree 🙂 At best what you could say “I did this. However the prescribed approach to do is to going through a guru”. Anyway I will stop my responses from now on 🙂

        Aum Shri Matrey namaha!

      • Namaste Nirmala,

I totally accept your views. The whole of Saptashati is a praise of the Goddess (Female). On the 8th day too, Kanyas (again girls) are worshipped. The 11th Adhyaya (Stanza 6) also says “All lores are your aspects O Devi; so are all WOMEN in the world, endowed with various attributes”.

Must I say further that women need to be initiated to chant their own glory!!

Chanting the Chandi itself is an inspiration from that Durga Devi. If your heart feels to chant, then do not ignore; it will only do good. Possibly, we men need to be initiated to chant HER glory 🙂

    • Jai Ma

      Pranam

Please pardon my comments since I am not a teacher, by any means. However, as someone who has been joined with the Devi Mahatmyam fro the past 45 years, the text seems to have become my sole existence.

With this perspective, one can interpret the word “read” in at least 3 ways:

      1. to read for joy, and the sense of feeling constantly connected to someone you know very well, and whose presence is eevrything in one’s life. As though your own heart was situated inside Her, animating HER and one has no life, not even a heart, without this constant loving presence, which is VERY real.

In that case, reading anything about HER is offering love, gratitude, affection, and so much else. What rules stand in the way? If She in complete charge, what need to ask for something, even though we feel deeply wounded as part of daily living?

What is perception, pain, suffering and joy except a series of thoughts. How and where do thoughts originate, and where do they exert their effects? In the Holy Chandi, She challenges, dvitiiyA kA mamAparA? WHO [ what] is other than ME.

It is often a very bitter pill to swallow, as the pain of life moves us to turn to the Mahatmyam, just as some turn to the leela of Bhagavan in the holy Ramayana or the Srimadbhagavat Purana. For reasons difficult to express, some find the same joy and comfort in reading this Mahatmyam, the leela of Holy Mother.

From this arised the 2nd type of reading:

      2. Reading the Mahatmyam as fulfilment of some ritual longing, or something the famuly has done for long, as a path to acquiring blessings in full measure. E.g. the Navaratri rituals observed in so many parts of India include this type of “reading” the Mahatmyam

Where this motivation is present, and it is hugely praiseworthy, then it is useful to care a little bit more about the external circumstances that attend to the reading. Perhaps an asana, dedicated solely to this purpose, perhaps a clean place, perhaps some other small gestures, like offering puja to the text itself, to show one’s love and care.

In the first instance, if one chants the Chandi form memory, and all the time in the head only, where is there any complication of “reading”?

      3. In this type of “reading”, one tries to find solutions to pressing material problems by invoking Her power, grace and auspicious strength. In such cases, even more strictures would come into place, because now we are dealing in a cause and effect mode. To get the full effect, one needs to carefully attend to all parts of the cause. In such a situation, one useful solution would be to find someone who is deeply dissolved into this holy text and is without greed or bad attitudes in personal life.

Having such a person do the recitation, and seek some boons, might be a good way, since the power of mantra is being invoked. No longer is one having a loving, casual, constant converstaion with Mother, but one is asking HER to change something for the better, or to receive rewards like wealth.

In that case, the relationship has altered a little, and more care must be taken to adhere to the cautions sages have chosen to attach to this text.

Sorry to use so many words, but this is an area where pain can result from hasty or ill-considered actions.

      With humblest pranams

      Hare Srinivasa

    • If you have devotion and love in your heart, then go ahead.

  8. If we have to read Durga Saptsati in more than 1 days (3 or 7 or 9) then how to recite Kawach, Argala, kilak, ratri suktam, devyarthvsirsham ? It is suggested to start Durga Saptsati after reciting Kawach, Argala, kilak, ratri suktam, devyarthvsirsham, do we need to recite these daily?

    Please guide.

  9. I am unable ti offer a comment but would only say that I am overjoyed to hear and learn of Devi!s victory over the asuras. I beleive Devi as my mother as the Universal Mother.

    • I read lots of confused question but seen hardly satisfactory logical reply. Once upon time i was very confused too with ritual. Asked one question ,instead getting proper reply more confusion occured. I was fed up and decided what my heart say . As i have full faith in Ma i started with Ganesh Mantra followed by sidhhkunjika strom , Saptsatipath ended with Lord Shiva’s panchakshar mantra. I try to do everyday. Believe me i feel so good and I always feel Mataji is around me guiding me in every steps. I even do not need to ask any material things. My wishes fulfilled in magical way n good positive energy in my house so i learnt that love and faith is most important than any rituals n sequences.

    • The Killing of demons within us as explained by Devi Mahatmyam

The Devi Mahatmyam begins with Maha Rishi Markandeya narrating how a virtuous king named Suratha, dispossessed of his kingdom meets the merchant Samadhi who too has been dispossessed of his wealth and cast out by his own wife and children – both plagued by thoughts of loss, betrayal and attachment to the past approach the wise sage Su-Medha, whose task it is to awaken them to a higher spiritual awareness. The king, the merchant and the sage are archetypal characters that reside in all of us to differing degrees, characters with whom we can identify to varying degrees.
Suratha is “one who has a good chariot” The body is the chariot while the Self is the rider. The word ‘samadhi’ denotes a focused or concentrated mind, a mind in meditation. As his name indicates, Samadhi, the merchant is single-minded or one-pointed in his pursuits. Being a merchant initially his focus is on wealth. Both of them approach Su-Medha (means good intellect) to overcome their betrayals and to move to a higher plane.
The sage explains in Devi Mahatmyam (which consists of 13 chapters) to Suratha and Samadhi, how the Goddess takes different forms and kills each of the below demons – who are in fact within each one of us. These demons are explained in brief, below
      1. Madhu/Kaitabh: Madhu actually means honey and he represents attachment to this world, which seems sweet to us. Kaitabh means a pricking thorn and signifies our aversion to things we deem as unpleasant. Both of these traits, which do much to make up our overall nature or temperament. Killing of Madhu-Kaitabh represents win over the two demons of attachment/aversion or praise/criticism

      2. Mahishasura: Mahisha meaning “buffalo.” Isn’t there a buffalo in our minds as well? The buffalo stands for tamoguna, the quality of laziness, darkness, ignorance and inertia. We have these qualities too. We love to sleep. Although we may have a lot of energy and potential inside us, we prefer to do nothing – just like the buffalo that likes to lie in pools of water. In the Puraanic story, Durga Devi’s killing of the Mahisha demon is, symbolically, the destruction of the tamoguna within us that is very difficult to destroy. To gain noble virtues, all evil tendencies in the mind must be destroyed. This destruction is represented by the Goddess Durga. Durga is durgati harini: “She who removes our evil tendencies.” This is why she is called Mahishasura Mardini, the destroyer of Mahishasura (demon)

      3. Shumbha/ Nishumbha: One more set of demons within us are Shumbha/Nishumbha. Shumbha means doubting oneself and Nishumbha means doubting others. When the mind is clogged with doubt about oneself or others, neither peace nor progress is possible- The army of Shumbha/ Nishumbha consist of following demons :

      a) Dhumra-lochana: “Dhumra” means smoke and “lochana” means eyes. Dhumralochana is one who sees everything hazy; there is no clarity of perception

      b) Chanda/Munda: Chanda represents an argumentative person, one who opposes everything. Munda, on the other hand, has no reasoning at all. With Chanda and Munda, wrong logic and perception prevail
      c) Raktabija: He possesses a unique power. Whenever a drop of his blood falls to earth, another demon of identical size and strength springs up. Raktabija blood represent the overwhelming power of desire. Like a seed, every desire that falls on the fertile soil of our mind grows to maturity and bursts with seeds for the next planting. Every desire produces the seeds of many more, and we find we are never satisfied. Killing of Raktabija represents killing of these tendencies in us.

The war between the gods and the demons actually refers to the perpetual conflict between the forces of light and darkness, between righteous and unrighteous urges. Thus there are two opposing psychic forces within all of us, which with the help of a force (you call such force by whatever name according to your religious orientation) beyond our power, we have to over-come

  19. Namaskaram. very excellent ! useful information for parayanam. thanks. my humble saranam to maha periyava .

  20. This is enlightening but I stil want to know what is this Argla, Kilkam and ratrishuktam? Why it is necessary to recite with Chandipath? Almost on every web I see that one must receive all these but no one has explain what are they actually? I don’t mean translation. I mean their importance. I don’t want any earthly benefits and don’t have any intention to ask any material things so can anyone pls tell me the real reason behind these prayer. Also there is shapvimochan. Each verses end with Brahma Vashistha shapad vimuktabhav. I understand the translation but what is the reason to recite it. Whose has crushed and whose curse removes. In Shivyog shivanandbaba has given 700 big mantra in place of Durga shaptshati 700 verses. Each bij mantra for each verse which is very good but how do we know which bin mantra is for which verse and it’s meaning

    • Jai MA

      Pranam Mataji,

That you are aking these questions means that it is the Holy Mother Herself Who is arising as this bhava, this thought. So, SHE would also provide the resources. The same questions you ask began troubling me around 1973, and it was not until 1976 that i was able to find a path. From that time to this, it has been a process of continuous search, but also some joy. Or, rather, a lot of joy, amidst all other tribulations in life, and the sole thing that has kept me alive, and partially able to understand why one has taken brith. Hence, my love for this text is beyond words.

What you ask should ideally be communicated to you by some one who has dedicated her/his life to this sadhana. You will find many books on the subject, including one by an Americal swami who makes veryh categorical statements which is not how i was taught. Maybe Mother has given him insights in a particular way, or maybe it is something else.

One has made a close study of savants of the Holy Devi Mahatyam, from Swami Karapatriji to so many others.

There are do many sages even in the present, who have done very fruitful sadhana

      http://sadhansamar.blogspot.com/2015/11/

The above is one example which has received much reverence from the time it was created. Other commentaries exist.

      Pranam

  22. Thanks for the wonderful information.
At Chennai many Mahila Mandali complete the entire Parayanam of Devi Mahatmyam In one sitting on three or four occasions during Navaratri.
The entire Parayanam takes about 4 hours.
Of course practices before and after the main recitation vary according to each group.
This article will help them in future Parayanams.
    Maha Periyavaa Saranam.

  23. At beginning of Devi Saptashati, detailed procedure of puja with Nyas, Mudra etc given. My question is whether detailed puja before reading is necessary or we can just go with reading as per your procedure. It is so powerful that many people avoid to read in fear of something bad will happen if there is any fault in reading.

  34. Thanks a lot for this post on Navarathri eve. Never knew about Sidha Kunjika Sthothram till now. Seems very important to chant. I am posting in this Sidha Kunjika Sthothram with meaning br P. R. Ramachander Maama for people like me, who did not know. Jaya Jaya Sankara, Hara Hara Sankara! Sri Devyai Namaha!

    Sidha Kunjika Stotram
    (The unhidden song of perfection)

    Translated by
    P.R.Ramachander

(This great prayer is chanted before the

reading of Chandi path / Sapthasathi (known

as Devi Mahathmya) in the northern parts of

India. It is more thanthric in nature and

has been taught by Lord Shiva to Goddess

Parvathi. Devotees believe that just a

recitation of Sidha Kunjika stotram is

equivalent to recitation of the complete

Chandi(Devi Mahatmyam) and also that the

reading of Chandi Path (Devi Mahatmya)

would not give complete results without

reading Sidha Kunjika stotram before it.

The Sanskrit text of the stotra is

    available in

    http://sanskritdocuments.org/doc_devii/sidd

    hakunjikaa.itx. My humble sense of

gratitude to Sri Akhay Dayal who brought

    this stotra to my notice.)

    Shiva Uvacha:-
    1.Srunu devi pravakshyami Kunjika stotram

    uthamam,
Yena matra prabhavena chandi Japa Shubho

    Bhaveth.

    Shiva Said,
Oh Parvathi please hear the great prayer

    called Kunjika,
By recitation of which , the recitation of

    Devi Mahatmya(Chandi)
    Would become more powerful/auspicious.

2.Na kavacham, Na argali stotram , kilakam

    , na rahasykam,
Na sooktham Napi dhyanam cha na nyaso na

    cha varchanam.

There is no need to recite Kavacham ,

Argalam , Kilakam and the Rahasya thrayam,
Nor is it necessary to recite Suktham ,

Dhyanam , Nyasam and also no need to

    worship.

(These are preliminary stotras that need to

be recited before reading of Devi

    Mahatmyam/Chandi/Durga Sapthasathi. Here is

it told that if this kunjika stotram is

recited then there is no need to recite all

    these)

    3.Kunjika pata mathrena Durga phalam

    Labheth,
    Athi Guhyataram devi, Devanam abhi

    durlabham.

Just by reading Kunjika , we would get the

    effect of reading Chandi,
And Oh Goddess this is a great secret and

even Devas do not know it.

    4.Gopaneeyam prayathnena swayoniriva

    Parvathi,
    Maranam, Mohanam Vasyam Sthambho

    ucchadanadhikam.
Pata Mathrena sam sidhayeth Kunjika stotram

    uthamam.

Oh Parvathi , you decide about the effort

    to keep it as secret
Because just by reading this great prayer

on Kunjika , we can easily achieve,
    Murder , attraction , slavery , making

    things motionless by repeated chants,

    5.Atha Manthra:-
    Now the chant:-

Om Aim, kleem Chamanudayai viche . Om Gloum

    hoom kleem joom sa,
Jwalaya jwalaya , Jwala, Jwala , prajwala ,

    prajwala ,
Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai viche Jwala,

ham sam lam ksham phat swaha.

( this is a Thanthric chant which consists

of sounds and words which are meant to

please the Goddess. “Jwalaya” means “Burn”

    , “Prajwala” Means “set fire.”)

    Ithi Mantra :
    This is the chant

6.Namasthe Rudra Roopinyai , Namsthe Madhu

    Mardini,
    Nama Kaidabha Harinyai , Namasthe

    Mahishardhini

Salutations to her who is angry ,

Salutations to the killer of Madhu,
Salutations to the winner over Kaidabha ,

Salutations to the killer of Mahisha.

    7.Namasthe Shumbha hanthryai cha

    Nishumbhasura Gathini ,
Jagratham hi Maha devi , japam Sidham

    kurushwa may.

Salutations to the killer of Shumba and the

    killer of Nishumbha,
Oh Great goddess , please safely give me
