குருவை அநுபவியாகத்தான் சாஸ்திரங்கள் காட்டுகின்றன: ‘ப்ரம்ம நிஷ்டம்’ என்று உபநிஷத்தில்; ‘தத்வ தர்சின:’ என்று கீதையில். அப்படிப்பட்டவர், நிஜமாகவே ப்ரஹ்ம ஸாக்ஷாத்காரம் பெற்றவர், இந்த நாளில் கிடைப்பாரா என்று யோஜனை பண்ண வேண்டாம். நிஜமான முமுக்ஷுதாவோடு தவியாகத் தவித்தால் ஈச்வரன் நிச்சயம் அப்படி ஒருவரைக் காட்டிக் கொடுக்காமல் விடமாட்டான். ஸதாகால ப்ரஹ்ம நிஷ்டரோ இல்லையோ, இருக்கிறதற்குள் ச்ரேஷ்டரான ஒருவரைக் காட்டி அவருக்குள்ளே இவனுக்கு மஹாவாக்யம் தருகிற ஸமயத்தில் ஸாக்ஷாத் அந்த ஈச்வரனே ஆவிர்பாவம் ஆகி உபதேசம் பண்ணிவிடுவான். அப்படித்தான், அப்படித்தான்1; அதிலே ஸந்தேஹமே வேண்டாம். இந்த நாளிலும் அநுபவியான குரு கிடைப்பாரா என்று இவன் ஏங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கிற மாதிரியே, இந்த நாளிலும் நிஜமான முமுக்ஷு கிடைப்பானா என்று ஸ்வாமியும் ஏங்கிக் கொண்டுதான் இருப்பாராதலால் அப்படிப்பட்டவனை விட்டுவிட மாட்டார். வெளியிலே ஸ்தூல ரூபத்திலே ஒரு மநுஷ குருவுக்குள்ளேதான் என்றில்லாமல் இவனுடைய அந்தராத்மாவிலேயே அவர் ஸூக்ஷ்ம குருவாக ஆவிர்பவித்தும் அநுக்ரஹிப்பதுண்டுதான். ஆனால் அதை நான் சொல்லப்போனால், இந்த அடங்காப் ….. [சட்டென்று வார்த்தையை மாற்றி] அடக்கம் போதாத ஸ்வதந்திர யுகத்தில், ‘குரு என்றே ஒரு ஆள் வேண்டாம். ஈச்வரன் தானே நேராக அப்படி நமக்குள்ளேயே அநுக்ரஹம் பண்ணி விடுவான். சங்கரசார்யாரே சொல்லிவிட்டார்’ என்று ஆரம்பித்துவிடக்கூடும்! வெளி குரு இல்லாமல் உள் குருவாக அவனே வருவதென்பது அபூர்வத்திலும் அபூர்வம். ரொம்பவும் அபூர்வமான உசந்த முமுக்ஷுக்களுக்கே அப்படி வருவது. அல்லது ரொம்பவும் அபூர்வமான பூர்வ ஸம்ஸ்காரம் இருக்கிறவனுக்கு அவன் முமுக்ஷுவாக இல்லாமல் ஸாமான்ய நிலையிலிருந்தால்கூட ஈச்வரனே இழுத்துப் பிடித்துத் தடுத்தாட்கொள்வதுமுண்டு. அதை ஜெனரல் ரூலாக்குவது அடியோடு பிசகு.

The scriptures themselves point out that the Guru must be an experiencer: in the Upanishads he is called “Brahma-niṣṭha” (one established in Brahman); in the Gītā, “tattva-darśinaḥ” (those who have seen the Truth). Such a one, who has truly attained Brahman-realization, should not be thought of as impossible to find in our own times. If a genuine seeker of liberation (mumukṣu) yearns with intensity, the Lord will certainly not fail to reveal such a person. Even if there are no perpetual Brahma-niṣṭhas around, the Lord will show the seeker the best among those available, and at the very moment of imparting the Mahāvākya, it is verily the Lord Himself who manifests through that Guru and delivers the teaching. It is exactly so — without doubt.
Just as the seeker longs for an experiential Guru even today, so too the Master longs for a genuine seeker of liberation; therefore, he will not abandon such a one. Not only in the outward, gross form of a human Guru, but even as the subtle Guru within the seeker’s own heart, He may manifest and bestow grace. Yet, if I say this, in this undisciplined age of excessive independence, people may immediately twist it: “We don’t need any external Guru at all. The Lord Himself will directly grant us grace within. Didn’t Śaṅkarācārya himself say so?” But the truth is, the Lord appearing as the inner Guru without an outer one is rarer than rare. It happens only for the most exalted seekers, or for someone with extraordinarily powerful impressions from past lives (pūrva-saṃskāra), whom the Lord may seize and transform even if he is not yet a seeker. To make this the general rule would be a grave mistake.
In short: The passage emphasizes that while scriptures demand a Guru who is an experiencer of Brahman, such Gurus are indeed available even today for sincere seekers. one should hear Kathopanishad. it is available in tamil by sri HH Omkarananda of vedapuri asharam at Theni or by HH Paramathmananda in English lectures available with sastra prakasika trust mylapore madras. of course there are two versions of lectures by HH, one the earlier classes and the other bhasyam and anubhuthi prakasa another vyakyanam. The first eighteen slokas before yamadharmaraja starts telling about aathma and what happens to the soul after death, the qualities required as a student and as a teacher are so well discussed that one will be thrilled. Perhaps Mahesh can borrow some of these cds from Dr. Mutyam Sharma, surgeon at Louiseville, KY. who is ardent devotee and follows all these and well learned. the only problem will be for both to meet though near yet far due to their work!!!!
I have all of Kato, keno, mundaka and mandukya upanishad lectures by Swami Paramarthanandha. Amazing lectures. Love his English..He has a very unique way of pronouncing certain words..I love the small Tamil words he inserts in his lectures! I listened to all of Mundaka and Kathoupanishad – don’t ask me any questions – not sure if i remember everything 🙂

oh yes i have been with tanjore swamigal in Hyderabad, if i remember star press at secunderabad padmaraonagar where he has done a lot of poojas but i never knew or expected that he was willing to take anyone as his disciple. i know that uchista ganapathi homam is great and one should see to believe it till lord ganesa appears from the homa late at night or even wait till next day early morning waiting for the glimpse the whole night.
i am happy you all the lectures of HH. in between he inserts so called tamil and he has admitted it is palghat tamil!!!
the greatness is he summarises the previous lectures before starting the next chapter.

I wish to share my experience.Till 1980 I never thought of seeking a Guru.One day a friend who enthused others to recite as many Ramaa namas as possible every day and next day he will ask for the count , note it down. One day he asked me” have you a Guru”.I said I never thought about it. Since then I was yearning for one and believe in a month or two 90 year old Sri.Ramanandendra Swamigal of Tanjore( well known as Sri.Sundaresa Sarma, a Uchishta Ganapathy Upasakar came to Hyderabad.As he was related(uncle) to my close friend in his previousAshram and He became my Guru and gave me and my wife Tharaka Mantram. Many VIPs like CM’s, Governors and even PM Morarji Desai and Indira Gandhi have taken His blessings. He was quite active and touring till his Samadhi at the age of 99 in 1989.
