Chandramouleeswarar Puja Details Question

I am sure we all know that Chandramouleeswarar puja typically runs for hours in the matam. I have seen many – can’t stay that I stayed from start to end – while the screen is put on, I go around in the matam – or sometimes outside too – always feel guilty – always running short of time during India trips…..

Here is my question:

I know Rudram is chanted, Rudra Trishati is chanted – not sure about all steps/details?? Can someone write on the details of the puja done by Periyavas?  Is there any difference between morning and evening puja???

  1. An additional information is that the theertham (water) collected for the abhishekam, etc. are strictly brought from nearby well (or may be river, I don’t know) only. This I have twice seen while performing the Puja in Guwahati Goshala once (Pradosha-kaala Puja) and also another one in Shri Kamakshi Panchayatana temple in the same city. A sevak religiously draw water from the well for this purpose.

  2. பகிர்வுக்கு நன்றி.

  3. Great article posted immediately following this by Mahesh. Extremely blessed to read thiat. Gave vivid picture of Sri ChandramouLeeswara Pooja! Jaya Jaya Shankara, Hara Hara Shankara!

  4. Same question I have for many years, if someone can provide details about the vigrahams and devatha moorthis for which Pooja is performed

    • om sri gurubyo namaha
first the pooja is panchayathanam pooja which requires daily pooja, the regular abishekam is done to all
but we notice only swami and ambal pooja due to the pitch darkness in puja kattu ,only villaku available(only natural light) another speciality is narasimha saligramam is also be seen in kanchi sri matam(tis speciality is found only in sringeri and kanchi sri matam)as bagavad pada got dharshan of narasimha swami in south india he specifically worship and kept in these matams.
the swamy is yoga lingam ,the spatika lingam from kailasham by kailasha pathi given to bagavath padal
and ambal as a gift she gave anadha lahari(later he completed it as soundarya lahari) he installed in 5 places and this swamy is one among the five.trikala pooja to “swamy and ambal” only i have heard that mahaeriyava will do pooja hours together(not 1 or 3)like 5 hours and more and will go to biksha vandanam or if it is late will continue the uccha kala pooja with abishekam. And this also i have heard that the acharyas of kanchi will talk to swamy and ambal during pooja specifically speaking mahaperiyava will touch the pada padmas of swamy and ambal .this is the reason the curtain’s of pooja kattu often get closed during the abishekam and alankaram.

      next is alankaram
periyava used to add all the kavacham, nagabaranam, vibuthi achu, eka bilvam in silver, chandra kala and surya kala and to ambal one big ball of powder red sandle place at the top of meru which cover the half portion of meru from bindhu portion followed by netram, eye brose ,nose, and lips.aditional jewls for ambal.
shiva preethi(flowers that swamy loves to take) pushpams are compulsarly added and devi preethi(flowers ambal love to take) pushpams are added in alankaram.

      coming to archanai
as mahesh sir said rudra trishathi (in rudram 2 to 9th anuvakkam)is done as archanai to swami with athi sudha bilva leaves(athi sudha leaves are the freshley plucked leaves used imediately) but u can see the archanai to swamy with rudra trishati .Followed by archanai to ambal with laitha trishathi unfortunately u cant see it.it is with red or yellow flower. all sodasa upacharam to swamy with “kudai, surutti, kodi, kanadi, visiri, venchmaram, eka deepam, dwi deepam, trideepam,
chaturdeepam, panchadeepam, aaru kilai konda deepam” (till this u cant see anything all happens only between the periyavas and the swamy’s),aduku deepam, natchatra deepam and i think kumba deepam also included (but some times i have seen the kumba aarathi and some times not)a oppurtunity to see it.

      Finally to artha jama pooja
after all pooja gets over swamy and ambal and other devathas are placed in two different vendi boxes with pattu cloth and filled with flowers that has been offered in night pooja(the pratyegatha in tis is periyava in sri matam would do pooja at different time not in a routine clock time like morning pooja at 8 and 2 pooja at 1pm and final pooja at 7 pm not like this. the idea of doing the pooja at different time is to make there disciples to forget about food, tiredness and etc. mahaperiyava would say that” naanum neengalum deha sugathuku adimai agakudadhunu ippadi dinamum ovvoru neerathula pooja kaala thamadhichu seiren” it is still followed.
the pattu cloth has the ability to make the devatha not to get hunger quickely and other pratyegatha is it stores the energy and power of swamy permenantly)
the boxes are kept cloded after pooja and the boxes are taken to the room were acharya present

      the next day
the boxes are opened by acharyas and removing of old flowers and pattu thuni and placed for abishekam

thanku for giving me the oppurtunity to swamy it
the above content given by me is what i have seen and what i have heard from my father, and my seniors

jaya jaya shankara hara hara shankara

      mahaperiyava sharanam

      gurave sharanam

    • corrections

i have heard that mahaperiyava will do pooja hours together(not 1 or 3)like 5hours

to ambal one big ball of powder red sandle place at the top of meru which cover the half portion of meru from bindhu portion followed by netram, eye brose ,nose, and lips with kunkumam and a beautful tilakam at the for head of ambal(chandanam).aditional to that jewls for ambal is added.
shiva preethi(flowers that swamy loves to take) pushpams are compulsarly added and devi preethi(flowers ambal love to take) pushpams are added in alankaram.

the boxes are kept closed after pooja and the boxes are taken to the room were acharya present
(the reason is the only property of sanyasi is his pooja and tis pooja is been handed over to him by his guru where the traditon is been followed for more that 2000 yrs )

thanku for giving me the oppurtunity to say it.

  5. Very Good Idea — We might follow some of the steps in our poojas such as SathyaNarayana Viradham, MahaAnusham etc.

  6. The Kamakoti Peetam Samsthana Devatha is Sri Mahatripurasundari sametha Srimad Chandramauleeswara Swami. While Sri Mahatripurasundari is worshiped in the form of a Meru, Swami is the Sphatika Yoga Linga murthi gotten by Sri Bhagavadpadal from Kailasha. It is Panchayatana Pooja, with Subramanya being worshiped in the form of Naga and Velayudham. But foremost worship is offered to Swami and Ambal. Pooja is offered thrice a day – thrikala pooja – which has to be done only by the Acharya Swamigals. No other person, even a sanyasin, can touch the devathas. Abhishekam is done twice, during the pratah-kalam and sayam-kalam. During Uccha-kalam, only prokshana vidhana abhishekam is performed. The ksheera abhishekam performed to Swami and Ambal to the accompaniment of Sri Rudram can be viewed by devotees. Soon after this is complete, abhishekams with other dravyams are performed to Swami and Ambal, but this cannot be seen by anybody. Alankaram is then performed by the Acharya and then followed by Rudra Trishati. After this, archana to Ambal is performed. The namavali used is not known clearly, although some say both Lalitha Sahasranama and Lalitha Trishati are recited. This is followed by dhupam, deepam, neivedyam, alankara and karpura aratrika. Following completion of Pratah-kala pooja, immediately the Uccha-kala pooja is performed with all the rituals except abhishekam. This is why it takes so much time. The evening pooja is performed with abhishekam if it is a Pournami or Friday or Pradosham. Otherwise, there is just prokshanam, followed by the rest of the rituals. During Navarathris, both Vasantha and Sharada, abhishekams are offered all 3 times, with Navavarana pooja performed during Pratah-kalam and Sayam-kalam. The duration during such times is extended further.

Additionally, the sevakas at the Pooja Sannidhi can be either brahmacharis or gruhastas, and if gruhastas, they need to undergo sarvanga kshavaram and must have a shikha. Earlier, only those gruhastas performing nitya aupasanam had the privilege to perform seva. I am not sure if this is followed presently. The sevakas have to maintain very rigorous and strict acharam and cannot consume even water once they are in the pooja sannidhi. If they drink water, they need to take bath again.

  7. the details will be known only to balu mama or mettur swamigal. next time i visit i will ask. i know there is difference between each kaala pooja. during maha periavas time there used to be poojas in all kaalas the last one sometime at night 10 or 11 pm as i have visited with my wife the last kaala pooja. of course the details of what goes on will be very interesting.

  8. I have been looking for any video of the pooja> I see Sringeri pooja on line but not Kanchi pooja. Do you have it? can you please post?
