Kanchi = Sringeri

Sringeri Periyava said about Mahaperiyava::

Mahaperiyava speaks highly about Sringeri Periyava’s thapas::

Below is what Sringeri Periyava advises to all – I can’t agree anymore.

Last but not the least, Mahaperiyava admits that Kanchi Vs Sringeri is not going to end anywhere sooner…

When I attended Washington DC Maharudram this year, I got this book – never opened it so far. I do want to finish this book soon.

  1. i was sure that many wouldn’t have read about the appreciations of each towards other Periyavas, which was the main reason of my posting. the mistake I made was the title – instead of Kanchi vs sringeri, I should have titled as Kanchi = Sringeri! Secondly, I see comments as “I am a Kanchi/sringeri follower”- shouldn’t you be – Adi Shankara follower ? the so-called indifferences are triggered by the devotees and not by Periyavas, which is quite painful. This blog doesn’t seem to have achieved what it should – this is clearly shown irn all these comments. Just be assured that all these comments wold have truly pained both the Periyavas. I am going to close this thread. you don’t have to feel “defeated” if you haven’t answerd someone’s question because I closed this.

  3. Hi Kannan
You must remember the Mahaperiyaval who lived in this mutt dont speak Lie and he is ardent follower of Harichandra Story. If this was not established in such a way maha periyaval would not have found the place worship of Sri Adisankara at Srisailam. Such a Gnanis dont born in branches. You must aware India undergone lots of muslims and other utrocity kings. sringeri peetam is in mountains and no one could reach and Kamakoti peetam is in plain lands and was attacked by all rulers for the sake of money. Even great Shiva Lingas destroyed where is the question of Mathas. Think intelligently and mention here. You dont know your three generations whom you belong to and you are talking about 2500 years Peeta.

  4. There can be no greater example than Sri Chandrashekhara Bharathi Mahaswamigal for an Avadhuta in the present day. And I agree that the agitation and animosity never stemmed from the Acharyas from either Mutts, but it rather found root in the followers. My only plead is hailing from a mutt dedicated to Advaita pravartana, let there be no place for division/disagreement at the highest level. Mention of “Chaturamnaya” Peetam at every given instance is going to affect this division/disagreement further.

    • Dear devotees of Shri Chandramouleeswara ! Please accept my ‘pranams’. Leaving aside the misunderstandings of the acharya followers please read this interesting story. I stay in Guwahati (Capital of Assam) for the past few decades. As you know river Brahmaputra flows in Assam. Its another name is ‘sonit’. Today’s Tezpur was earlier called as Sonitapuram. Tez or sonit means ‘blood’. This name came because once the water of Brahmaputra became red because of fight between Shiva and Vishnu !!!!!!!!!!!!!!. (we should take it, this is the leela of the Gods) The story behind this was Shri Krishna’s grandson Anirudhan was kidnapped by the daughter of Baanasura, Usha, as she fell love with him. They got married and hearing this the teevra Shivabhakta Baanasura was to kill the grandson of Shri Krishna. He sought the support of Shiva who agreed to fight, In order to save his grandson Shri Krishna came with his big army. Already quite a number of people died and the river was flowing like a blood river.

Brahmadev timely intervened and made the two parties understand gravity of the situation . Finally everything was amicably settled . Banasura accepted his son-in–law , Krishna also forgave for kidnapping his grandson. Few years back I visited Tezpur and lot of beautiful stone carvings (specially padmam – lotus Sri Chakra type , probably belong to this period ) are kept in a park.

Now, what was the reason for the fight between Shiva ganas and Vishnu-senas. Just EGO ! Even the ‘ego’ did not spare godly personalities.
It is said in Tamil that ‘manidhanum deivam agalaam’. Even man can become God with his good character and good deed. Thadanga pratishta of Shri Akilandeshwari is just one of the many agama rituals. Let us awaken the deivika-shakti within us . That is the real tadang pratishtai to the Divine Mother, who is beyond all these rituals. Many times Acharyas emphasized on these .

We need not carry forward the fights of the two Mutt devotees to the next generation. Let them know the spiritual qualities and the services of these Mutts. We should be bit ashamed of our fights , at the time when the other religious people are coming to us for some solace.

      • Dear Friends,

It is erroneous to attribute the acrimony to the Tatanka episode. It has more to do with the historicity of the Kanchi Mutt., viz, to the question whether the Kanchi Mutt was indeed established by Sri Adi Shankara or did it come into existence much later in history.

If an institution i)was indeed established by Sri Adi Sankara, ii) was indeed occupied by spiritual giants as the lineage of the Mutt seems to convey, iii) if an institution was indeed greatly revered by followers all through the centuries, then it is puzzling why there is lot of discussion in 20th century about its antiquity and why it has to prove with copper plates etc that it is original Shankar Mutt.
If it was always there, people would always remember it and there would be no need to prove that it always existed
Some other intriguing questions are i)Why there are no references to Kanchi Mutt in Saivite literature even though it is claimed to have 2500 years of hoary history ii) Why is there no branch of the Kanchi Mutt except in the last 50 years iii) Even if we accept the theory that the Mutt shifted to Kumbhakonam in mid-1700’s to avoid persecution, why is that for 200 years more, ie till 1950 or so, the Mutt shift back to Kanchi where it had been located for more than 2300 years or so and iv)Why did the Kanchi Mutt have to struggle even to get a foothold in Kanchipuram in 1950’s to get its present location.

All these and similar questions will not have a logical answer. The only reason is the underlying assumption is false, i.e., whether the Kanchi Mutt did exist for 2500 years. The logical answer to all such questions is that Kanchi Mutt is not of long historicity as it is being claimed for more than 100 years now.

  5. There cannot be a pittiable state than this. People fighting in the name of these two Peethams. When we utter a single word of disgrace or think low of any of these Mahapurushas, we are only disgracing our own Guru. Shri Mahesh has put the views of both the Acharyals about the other Peetham. They only bring tears in our eyes and display the greatness of these Peethams. There is nothing offensive of any of the side. In that same book, as continuation of this article, MahaPeriyaval makes it clear that He and ChandrashekaraBharathi Swamigal are not any different but ONE. The blog readers should go for a wide reading of both the Periyaval to avoid such quarrels. But end of the day, it is only HIS (THEIR)GRACE which will clean up our mind and prepare it for better things. HaraHaraShankara JayaJayaShankara

  6. I have just recently gone through this site/blog and felt pretty sad that I did not about this site/blog earlier, as it carries invaluable information about our Nadamadum Deivam Mahaperiyaval. For me our Maaperiyaval AND SRI CHANDRASHEKARA BHARATHI Mahaswamigal of Sringeri are the only GODs.

I had the privilege of being a resident of Kanchi for more than 17 years and have had good opportunities of Darshan of our GOD, Mahaperiyaval and also had an opportunity to study in the College (Sri Sankara Arts and Science College) and work for a few years in the Deemed University named after our Mahaperiyaval.

Very recently (about three years back) I had an opportunity to read about Sringeri Mahaswamigal Sri Chandrasekhara Bharathi and when I read about him, I was startled by the similarities between these two Brahma Jnanis (Of course it has to be like that). From that day I revere both of them as GOD (because Bhagwan Ramana has once stated that while Avatars are one form or the other of God, Jnanis are GOD themselves). (Though my ancestors were ‘devotees of Sringeri Mutt’, if at all I know some small information, it is about Kanchi mutt only and hence for me both are one and the same).

The books by Jnanananda Saraswathi Swamigal (poorvashrama Shri. Krishnaswami Iyer), on Mahaswamigal Sri Chandrashekara Bharathi Swamigal are a real treat to read for any Sathaka/Mumusuka and I have always read them with great reverence for the Guru Bhakthi he has shown in that. I used to shed tears upon reading the books and I make it a point to read the books again and again as I see Mahaperiayval in HIM. The books Saint of Sringeri, Dailogues With the Guru, Sparks from the Divine Anvil are a few of his works on Sringeri Mahaswamigal.

Later as a result of the benevolent Grace of THEM, I had an opportunity to read an amazing article by Shri. Ra. Ganapathy sir, and I was once again stunned by the similarities between the two Acharyas which were elucidated by Sir through his own experience of a conversation with our Mahaperiyaval. As stated by our Mahaperiyaval in that article it is all one and the same (HE would end it stating “BHA” is ‘SARAS’). The rivers may be many by name but it all leads us to ocean of ‘Advaitha’. If at all any devotee of either Mutt speaks with disdain about the other Mutt or shows any disrespect, it only shows their ignorance and immaturity. Or in other words it is the Leela of the Paraskathi as put forth by Shri. Ra. Ganapathi Sir. We have read that even in the presence of Bhagavadpadal, his three direct disciples wanted HIM to start HIS teaching/discourse, when the other disciple, Shri. Thottakar was still not there, which if misread/misunderstood will imply that there was difference among them or they did not have respect for Shri. Thotakar, which in the true sense could not have been.

Let us all the devotees of Mahaperiayaval follow the Principles of Sanatana Dharma preached by HIM and endeavaour to do our Anushtanams with true faith which will remove all these MAYA and make us one with the Divine.

  7. dear friends let us follow the advise of mahaperiya and tread along his footsteps .. we followers of mahaperiyava do not feel any sort of enmity with srigeri matam or sringeri sankaracharyas .. both matams are doing service for the cause of hinduism and humanity .. lokakshemam is their main objective .. we do not differentiate between kanchi matam and srigeri matam .. I being a native of kanchipuram, have my own attachment towards Kanchimatam and mahaperiyavas .. From the artcile above it is clear that sringeri abhinavatheertha swamigal has openly admitted that mahaperiyava has done a wonderful job for the sake of masses and his thinking is practical .. no devotees of mahaperiyava would advise against visiting sringeri or having darshan of acharyas from sringeri .. abhinava theertha swamigal when visited last to nanganallur, i was sitting in the first row to witness the poojas with devotion. Now Bharathi theertha swamigal is camping in chennai for chathurmasya vratham and with my family i attended the poojas which gave our family immense pleasure .. but I am made to understand that some of the devotees of sringeri does attach importance to Kanchi mutt and consider themselves as theevira followers of sringeri .. let it be .. why should we mind it .. let us be magnimous .. let us heed the advise and preachings of our mahaperiyava and treat both kanchi mutt and sringeri mutt with same reverance .. we have nothing to lose .. Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara!

  10. Maha Purushas adorned, adorn and will adorn both Peethas. To worship and think of Jeevanmukthas Sri Chandrasekhara Bharathi Maha SwamigaL of Sringeri and Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi SwamigaL of Kanchi will purify us and bring the highest good. Even the names of these Mahans are the same. Is there any more proof needed for their oneness? Why petty bickerings? As Murali Sambasivan rightly said, “Are Kamakshi and SaradambaL different?” I request all to read two great articles: The Two Chandrasekharas and Maha Swami and Maharshi( Maha Periyava and Ramana Bhagavan, written by Ra. Ganapati, which is in the Souvenir section of Kamakoti.org website. At a time when Sri Bharathi Theertha Maha SwamigaL is gracing Chennai and on the Aradhana Day of His Guru, Sri Abhinava Vidya Theertha Maha Swamigal, let there be unity and Matha Aikyam and both Math followers should pay Homage to our Preceptor Sri Adi Sankara by paying equal respect to both Mathas. Then only it will be respecting and following Advaitha.

    • Sreedhar sir,

Sorry if whatever is cited here may wound you or your sahashishyas that owe allegiance to Sringeri Mutt. Let me for a minute take sides here. The animosity was never created by Kanchi followers. It has been the other way round. We need to dig up a bit from history for this and this may seem a bit sour, but that can never be helped. In 1907, the Kumbabhishekam of the Tiruvanaikkaval temple had been arranged in celebration of the Srichakra Tatanka Pratishta mahotsavam for Sri Akhilandeshwari Ambal. The sole rights of this utsavam has always rested with the Kamakoti Peetam Acharya Parampara. The expenses for these utsavams was borne by one, Chidambaram Chettiar of Kanadukathan in Sivaganga district. Around this same time, the then reigning 33rd Sringeri Acharya, Sri Sachidananda Shivabhinava Nrsimha Bharathi MahaSwamigal was in yatra of TN districts. Since people hailing from Tirunelveli and its surrounding belt follow the Sringeri Peetam, this Chidambaram Chettiar was one such follower. Now, many Sringeri devotees felt since it is a devotee belonging to their mutt that is performing the Kumbhabhishekam, should it not be appropriate that the Sringeri Acharya perform the kumbabhishekam. This “thought” matured further and developed into a law-suit restraining Kanchi Acharya from performing the Tatanka Pratishta and Kumbabhishekam taking into advantage the young age of Mahaperiyava who was just 13 years old and the fact that he had attained the Peetam just a few months ago. But the court quashed this law-suit after thorough perusal of the historical documents supporting the Kanchi Acharya’s right. This, unfortunately, was the beginning and many more law-suits were to follow, questioning the very origin and existance of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. A scholar called Nadukkaveri Srinivasa Sastrigal (who was one of those instrumental in the Kaladi discovery and renovation) went to the extent of studying copper plates and ancient palmscripts in the Saraswathi Mahal Library to establish the originality of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, and these were submitted to the court, which in turn, ruled in favor of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. Also, if you see some videos that have been published in this website itself (Kizhathanjavur Subramanian and Papanasam Balasubramanian), it becomes clear where the unnecessary friction is. To detail a bit, Papanasam Balasubramanian was assigned the task of collecting donations for making Tirumangalyam to be distributed to poor families to help in marriage. He was asked by Mahaperiyava to go to his agraharam at Tirunelveli and let people know about this noble kainkaryam and collect just one rupee towards this. Now Papanasam Balasubramanian himself belongs to Kallidaikuruchi (near Tirunelveli) and like many other people of his region, is a follower of the Sringeri Mutt. He himself narrates in this video how he was shunned away by people there just at the mention of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. There are many more to tell here. Presently, the Sringeri Acharya is camping in Chennai; do you know how much unnecessary rumours and talks are being spread around. To just quote one single instance, the Shatabdhi Mahotsavam of Sri Rajagopala Ghanapatigal, the father of the famed Mullaivasal Sri Krishnamurthi Sastrigal, ex-Principal of Madras Sanskrit College was celebrated last week. Although several scholars (from Sringeri Mutt) were invited for this, many did not turn up because Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Mahaswamigal was going to take part in this function. Once an high office bearer of Sringeri Mutt shared the dias with Sri Pudu Periyaval , but he did not perform a namaskaram or even a anjalibaddha vandanam to the latter. The Shastras say when you sight a yati adorning kashayam with dandam, perform namaskaram immediately, with no further hesitation. But what happened here? Did this office bearer become bigger than this Sanyasi? I myself have heard many Sringeri Mutt followers speak nonsense and cite untrue incidents that never happened just to denigrate the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. How much more politics can be played. I can go on and on and on bringing up many more such things. Questions can be asked even about the very origin of the Sringeri Mutt. With utmost compassion, Mahaperiyava had, in his lifetime itself, restrained devotees from indulging in any form of arguments or protests in this matter. Hence, a lot are being quiet and many more things are being unsaid. Let me conclude with just one thing here – people in glass houses should never throw stones at those outside, especially at those who are within fortified ramparts.

  11. The first book I read regarding the Dakshinaamnaya Sringeri Vidya Peetham is the same book referred by Mahaperiyavaa on Yogeeswarar Chandrashekhara Bharati Mahaswamigal ‘The Saint of Sringeri’. I don’t have any words to describe the qualities & attributes of such a mahaan, rather I felt how blessed were the people who lived in the same period and had darshan of such mahaans. My guruji who taught me Rudram, Chamakam and sukthams @Pune, a staunch follower of Kanchi, after reading the book, said to me that he felt like he is reading devotees experiences with Mahaperiyavaa. I can’t emphasize beyond this. I would humbly request likely-minded people to buy a copy of ‘The Saint of Sringeri’ and read it. It’s such a treasure for the price the book possess. Also request you to go through this website. Brahmasri Jambunatha Ghanapatigal, who is none other than the son-in-law of Sri Gowrishankar Mama (as interviewed by Maheshji, and father of Senthilnatha Ghanapatigal, Ramanashramam) is one of the main trustees behind this noble institution.

    • Paramapurusha is one but manifests at different places in different names and roopams. Even it has struck so many times for me that Guru Shri Seshadri Swamigal and Shirdi Baghavan are one and the same but they chose tot be two different only for the benefit of the humans. Here pls note both Shiridi and Thirukadaiyur are also the same place where is said to be the Palazhi Madhanam took place and the Amirthakalasam emerged. So discrimination is only in our minds and not in the Supreme Beings whether they overtly pronounced it or not.

  13. I am surprised that people waste their time fighting and arguing about the superiority of peetams…….Are Sarada and Kamakshi different? We subscribe to Advaitam and at the same time fight over petty differences………………..Can we claim to be ardent devotees of maha periyavaa if we cannot follow his teachings?…………………………

    • ..I feel a True Sankara follower like me wd feel he is indebted even to the minutest particle of dust that has these or any other Acharyas blessings..I am convinced that I elevate myself by prostrating even to the Gate keepers of such learned Acharyas as that’s the least I cd do to show my unadulterated devotion for Adi Sankara…whom I consider Parameswara Himself.

  14. this is wonderful and most lucrative mahesh. yes i know personally periavaa was very appreciative of sringeri but i never knew the other side. it is good. one thing is certain that both kanchi and sringeri are working for the good of humanity. n.ramaswami

    • We are from Madurai and follow Sringeri. But our Acharyas always told us to revere the Kanchi Maha Periyavaa as the God who walks and pay respects to him whenever the opportunity arises. The Acharyas always have love and respect for each other. It is the disciples who create confusion and tension.

Just look at your last two statements in particular — And you wonder why there is animosity between the groups?! Your last two statements will certainly wound the sentiments of the Sringeri followers. Why do you have to denigrate the other Peetam to raise the one you support?

Trying to compare the Acharyas to establish one is higher than the other (by pulling down the other) is like a salt doll trying to measure the depth of the ocean.

  16. Mahesh, Immediatelt publish a write-up by RMANAI ANNA, which claos appeared in Shakti Vikatan. This is a story about, a set of people who embarked on a trip to Karanataka. Periyavaa ordered to visit Sringeri first and seek the blessing of VIDYA TIRTHA MAHASWAMIGAL. Some how they chose a different route and the bus they were travelling, encountered mechanical problem with the BREAK system. VIDYA TIRTHA MAHASWAMIGAL then saved them.
