காஞ்சி சங்கரமடத்துடனும் மகா பெரியவருடனும் நெருங்கிய தொடர்பு வைத்திருந்த பட்டாபி சார், பெரியவர் பற்றிய மெய்சிலிர்க்கும் விஷயங்களைத் தொடர்ந்து நம்மிடம் பகிர்ந்துகொள்கிறார். ”பெரியவா மடத்துக்கு வந்து பீடாரோகணம் பண்ணின காலத்துல, கஷ்டமான நிலைல இருந்தது மடம். பாங்க்ல கடன் வாங்கித்தான் நித்தியப்படி செலவுகளையே செய்யவேண்டியிருந்தது. எங்க தாத்தா மகாலிங்கய்யர்கிட்ட பெரியவா இதையெல்லாம் சொல்லியிருக்கார். அபர காரியத்துக்குதான் காய்கறி இல்லாம சமைப்பா. ஆனா இங்கே, நித்தியப்படி சமையலுக்கே காய் வாங்க வழியில்லாததால, ஆரஞ்சுப் பழத் தோலை எங்கேருந்தாவது தேடிக் கொண்டு வந்து, சாம்பார்ல போட்டுச் சமைக்கற நிலை இருந்துதாம்.
டீன் பருவத்துல பட்டத்துக்கு வந்தார் பெரியவா. கலவையில சேர்ந்தப்ப, அவருக்கு முன்னால பீடாதிபதியா இருந்த ஸ்ரீமகாதேவேந்திர சரஸ்வதி சுவாமிகள் முக்தி அடைஞ்சுட்டார். அதனால, ஆச்சார்யாள்கிட்டேருந்து படிக்கறதுக்கும் தெரிஞ்சுக்கறதுக்கும் வழியில்லாம போயிடுத்து. வைஷ்ணவ சம்பிரதாயத்துல ‘சுயம் ஆச்சார்ய புருஷன்’னு சொல்வாளே, அப்படித்தான் பெரியவாளும் வளர்ந்தார். முதல் நாள் காயத்ரி உபாசனை பண்ணிட்டு, மறுநாள் குருவுக்குப் பண்ணவேண்டிய காரியங்களைச் செஞ்சார் பெரியவா. அந்தக் காலத்துல அந்தணக் குடும்பங்கள்ல, ‘நாடு பாதி, நங்கவரம் பாதி’ன்னு ஒரு வசனம் உண்டு. என்ன அர்த்தம் தெரியுமா இதுக்கு? நங்கவரம் ஜமீன் ராஜப்ப ஐயர்னு ஒருத்தர்; அவருக்குக் காவிரிக்கரையில பதினஞ்சாயிரம் ஏக்கர் நிலம் இருந்துது. அடுத்தடுத்த காலங்கள்ல அதெல்லாம் போயிட்டுது. ஜமீனோட குடும்பத்தார், மகேந்திரமங்கலம்ங்கிற இடத்துல பாடசாலை ஒண்ணை ஏற்படுத்தி, வித்வான்கள்லாம் வர்றதுக்கு ஏற்பாடு பண்ணி, எல்லா கிரந்தங்களையும் படிச்சுத் தெரிஞ்சுக்கறதுக்கு வசதி பண்ணிக் கொடுத்தா. பெரியவா அதையெல்லாம் ‘மாஸ்டர்’ பண்ணிட்டார். அதாவது, நங்கவரம் ஜமீனும் உடையார்பாளையம் ஜமீனும்தான் மகாபெரியவாளோட வித்யாப்பியாசத்துக்கு ஏற்பாடு பண்ணினாங்கன்னு சொல்லுவா! பெரியவாளோட தபஸ், யாத்திரை, பிரசங்கம், அவரோட புகழ்னு ஜனங்களுக்குத் தெரிய ஆரம்பிச்சப்ப… மடமும் செழித்து வளர ஆரம்பிச்சுது. அவரோட மகிமையைத் தெரிஞ்சுண்டு மடத்துக்கு உதவின மக்கள் ஏராளம். ஆனாலும், பண விஷயத்துல பெரியவா ரொம்பக் கவனமா, ஜாக்கிரதையா இருப்பா. எத்தனையோ பெரிய மனுஷங்க எல்லாம் பணத்தைக் கட்டி எடுத்துண்டு வந்து பெரியவா காலடியில கொட்டினாலும், எல்லாத்தையும் ஏத்துக்கமாட்டார். யார்கிட்டேருந்து வாங்கலாம்; யார்கிட்டே வாங்கக் கூடாதுன்னு அவருக்குத் தெரியும். அந்தக் காலத்துலேயே ஒரு பெரும் பணக்காரர் கோடி ரூபாயைக் கொடுக்க முன்வந்தப்பகூட, வேண்டாம்னு மறுத்த மகான் அவர்! பழங்கள், அரிசி- பருப்புன்னு கொடுத்தா, வாங்கிப்பார். பணமா கொடுத்தா, தொடக்கூ அவரோடயே நாங்களும் தங்குவோம்; சமைக்கிறதுக்கு அரிசி, பருப்பெல்லாம் கையோடு எடுத்துண்டு போயிடுவோம். ஒரு தடவை, சித்தூர் செக்போஸ்ட்ல இருந்த அதிகாரிகள் எங்ககிட்ட இருந்த ஒரேயரு அரிசி மூட்டையையும் பறிமுதல் பண்ணிட்டா. ‘அரசாங்கம் கேக்கறது; கொடுத்துடு’ன்னு சொல்லிட்டார் பெரியவா. ‘அடுத்த வேளைச் சாப்பாட்டுக்கு என்ன பண்றது?’ன்னு எங்களுக்கெல்லாம் ஒரே கவலையா போச்சு! இந்த விஷயம் தெரிஞ்சதும், அப்ப ஆந்திர மாநில சீஃப் மினிஸ்டரா இருந்த என்.டி. ராமராவ் பதறிப்போயிட்டார். அரிசியைத் திருப்பிக் கொடுக்க உத்தரவு போட்டதோடு, ஓடி வந்து பெரியவாகிட்டே நேரில் மன்னிப்பும் கேட்டுண்டார். பெரியவா மேல அவருக்கு அபரிமித மரியாதை! உடனே பெரியவா, ‘இதுல மன்னிப்புக் கேக்க என்ன இருக்கு? அரசாங்க சிப்பந்திகள், அவாளோட கடமையைத்தானே செஞ்சா! அதுல குத்தம் சொல்லப்படாது. காஞ்சி மடத்துமேல நீங்க வைச்சிருக்கற அன்பும் மரியாதையும் என்னிக்கும் மாறாம இருக்கணும்’னு ஆசீர்வதிச்சார் கருணையுடன்! என்.டி.ஆர், சென்னாரெட்டி, எம்.ஜி.ஆர்-னு எல்லாருமே பெரியவா மேல பெரிய பக்தியோடு இருந்தா. ‘அவா நம்ம மடத்துமேல மரியாதை வெச்சிருக்கிறது பெரிசில்லே; அந்த மரியாதையை நாம காப்பாத்திக்கணும். அதான் பெரிசு’ன்னு அடிக்கடி சொல்வார் பெரியவா!” என்று சிலிர்த்தபடி சொன்ன பட்டாபி சார், காஞ்சி மகானுக்கும் மற்ற மகான்களுக்குமான தொடர்புகளையும் விவரித்தார். ”திருக்கோவிலூர் ஞானானந்தகிரி சுவாமிகள்னு பெரிய மகான் இருந்தார். அவர் வாழ்ந்த இடத்தைத் ‘தபோவனம்’னு சொல்வா. முக்காலமும் உணர்ந்த மகான் அவர்; உட்கார்ந்த இடத்துலேருந்தே எத்தனையோ பக்தர்களைக் காப்பாத்தி அருள்பாலிச்சிருக்கார்! எப்பவும் சிரிச்ச முகத்தோடு இருப்பார்; தெய்வாம்சம் உள்ள ஞானி. இன்னிக்குப் பிரபலமா இருக்கிற நாமசங்கீர்த்தனத்துக்கு மூல காரணம், அவர்தான்!
யார்கிட்ட போய், என்னன்னு கேக்கறதுன்னு தெரியலை பக்தர்களுக்கு! அதே நேரம், சுவாமிகளை அந்த நிலையில் பார்க்கிறதுக்கும் மனசு சங்கடப்பட்டுது. அப்ப யாரோ சிலர், ‘எல்லாரும் உடனே காஞ்சிபுரம் போய், பெரியவாகிட்ட விஷயத்தைச் சொல்லி, என்ன பண்றதுன்னு கேளுங்கோ’ன்னு யோசனை சொல்ல… பக்தர்கள் சில பேர் கிளம்பி, பெரியவாகிட்ட வந்து, ஞானானந்தகிரி சுவாமிகள் பத்தி விவரம் சொன்னா. எல்லாத்தையும் கேட்டுண்ட பெரியவா, ‘கவலைப்படாதீங்கோ! அவருக்கு ஒண்ணும் ஆகலை. அவர் சமாதி நிலைல இருக்கார்; சாம்பிராணிப் புகை போடுங்கோ. அது ஒருவித ஆராதனை; சமாதி நிலையிலேர்ந்து எழுந்துடுவார்’னு சொன்னார். பக்தர்களுக்கு எல்லையில்லாத சந்தோஷம். ‘சுவாமிக்கு ஒண்ணும் ஆகலே’ங்கிற மகிழ்ச்சியோடு திருக்கோவிலூருக்கு ஓடினா. பெரியவா சொன்னபடி, சாம்பிராணி புகை காட்டி, ஆராதனை பண்ணினா. அதன் பிறகு, ஞானானந்தகிரி சுவாமிகள் சமாதி நிலைலேருந்து மீண்டு வந்தார். ஒருமுறை, பெரியவா திருவண்ணாமலை போயிருந்தப்போ, கிரிப் பிரதட்சிணம் பண்ணினார். அவரோடு இன்னும் நாலஞ்சு பேர் போனா. கொஞ்ச நேரத்துல, பகவான் ரமணரோட சீடர்கள் சில பேர், கையில் பிட்சைப் பாத்திரத்தோடு எதிரே வந்துண்டிருந்தா. பெரியவாளைப் பார்த்ததும் நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணிட்டு, ‘நாங்க பகவான் ரமணரோட சீடர்கள். பகவான் அங்கே ஆஸ்ரமத்துல இருக்கார்’னு சொன்னா. உடனே பெரியவா, ‘அப்படியா’ங்கிறாப்பல தலை அசைச்சுக் கேட்டுண்டுட்டு, புன்னகையோடு அவங்களை ஆசீர்வாதம் பண்ணிட்டு, மேலே நடக்க ஆரம்பிச்சார். ரமண பக்தர்கள் கொஞ்சம் தயங்கி நின்னுட்டுக் கிளம்பிப் போனாங்க. அவாளுக்கு வருத்தம்… ரமணரைப் பத்தி, அவரோட சௌக்கியம் பத்தி, பெரியவா ஒண்ணுமே விசாரிக்கலையே; தெரிஞ்ச மாதிரியே காட்டிக்கலையேன்னு! அந்த பக்தர்கள் மலையேறிப் போய், ஸ்ரீரமண பகவான்கிட்ட பிட்சையைக் கொடுத்துட்டு, வழியில காஞ்சிப் பெரியவாளைத் தரிசித்ததைச் சொல்லி, தங்களது வருத்தத்தையும் தெரிவிச்சாங்க. அதைக் கேட்டதும் வாய் விட்டுச் சிரிச்சாராம், ரமண பகவான்! ‘அட அசடுகளா?! நாங்க ரெண்டு பேரும் பேசிண்டாச்சு; இப்பவும் பேசிண்டிருக்கோமேடா; இதுக்கா வருத்தமா இருக்கேள்?!’ன்னாராம். திகைச்சுப் போய் நின்னாளாம், பக்தர்கள்! இதையெல்லாம் அப்போ நேர்ல இருந்து பார்த்த 87, 88 வயசு தாண்டின சுமங்கலி மாமி, எங்கிட்ட இதைச் சொன்னப்போ, அப்படியே நெகிழ்ந்துபோயிட்டேன். காஞ்சிப் பெரியவரும் ஸ்ரீரமணரும் மகா ஞானிகள்; தபஸ்விகள். அவங்களுக்குள்ளே எப்பவும் சம்பாஷணை
பால் பிரன்ட்டன் என்பவர் ஆன்மிக விஷயமா பேசறதுக்கு மகா பெரியவாகிட்ட வந்தார். அப்ப பெரியவா, ‘அவர் ஞான மார்க்கத்துல போயிண்டிருக்கார். நான் கர்ம மார்க்கத்துலே போயிண்டிருக்கேன். உன்னோட கேள்விகளுக்கெல்லாம் பதில் தரக்கூடியவர், திருவண்ணாமலையில இருக்கார். உன் சந்தேகங்களையெல்லாம் அவராலதான் தீர்த்துவைக்க முடியும்’னு சொல்லி, பால் பிரன்ட்டனை ரமணர்கிட்டே அனுப்பி வைச்சார். பால் பிரன்ட்டனும் அதன்படியே ரமணரை வந்து சந்திச்சு, தன்னோட சந்தேகங்கள் எல்லாம் விலகி, அவரோட பக்தர் ஆகி, புஸ்தகமே எழுதினாரே! பெரியவாளுக்கும் பகவான் ரமணருக்கும் பரஸ்பரம் அன்பு இல்லேன்னா இது நடந்திருக்குமா? மொத்தத்துல, காஞ்சி மகானும் ஸ்ரீரமண பகவானும் நம் தேசத்துக்குக் கிடைச்சது மாபெரும் பாக்கியம்! |
அப்பல்லாம் விவசாயிகள் ல், வாழைக்காய், வாழைத்தண்டு, வாழைப்பூன்னு தங்களால் முடிஞ்சதைக் கொண்டு வந்து கொடுப்பா. மத்தபடி காசா- பணமா கொடுக்கமுடியாது அவங்களால. ‘நாமளும் அதை எதிர்பார்க்கக்கூடாது’ம்பார் பெரியவா!
ட மாட்டார். கிராமம் கிராமமா நடந்து போயிருக்கார். பஸ் ஸ்டாண்ட், ஸ்கூல், மரத்தடி, ஆத்தங்கரையோரம்னு, வசதி வாய்ப்புகளையெல்லாம் பார்க்காம, எங்கே இடம் கிடைக்கறதோ அந்த இடத்துல தங்கிப்பார், பெரியவா!
ஒருமுறை, அவரைத் தரிசனம் பண்ண வந்த ஜனங்களும், அங்கேயே இருக்கிறவங்களும் கவலைப்பட ஆரம்பிச்சுட்டா. ஏன்னா… சுவாமிகள் ஒரே இடத்துல உக்கார்ந்துண்டு, ஆடாம அசையாம அப்படியே ஸ்தம்பிச்சு இருந்தார். அதைப் பார்த்து என்னமோ, ஏதோன்னு பதறிப்போயிட்டா. அதுவும், சிலை மாதிரி அஞ்சாறு நாள் அசைவில்லாம உட்கார்ந்திருந்தா, பார்க்கிறவாளுக்குப் பதற்றம் வரத்தானே செய்யும்?!

Pattabhi Sir who had very close association with the Kanchi Matham and with MahaPeriyava continues to share with us thrilling incidents about Periyava
The Matham was going through a very difficult stage when Periyava’s Peetharohanam happened. The daily expenditures of the Matham was happening using the money obtained as loan from the bank. Periyava has told all this to my grandfather Mahalinga Iyer. Cooking without vegetables would be done only for certain kind of activities but since there was no means to buy vegetables even for normal, day-to-day cooking, orange peels would be obtained somehow and be used in Sambar. Apparently, this was the situation
In those days, farmers would bring raw bananas, banana stems and banana flowers as per their capacity and hand them over. They could not donate cash. “We also should not expect them to donate cash”, Periyava would say !
Periyava took over as the Mathadhipathi as a teenager. When He was admitted in Kalavai, His predecessor Shri MahaDevendra Saraswathi attained Mukthi. So there was no way for Him to observe and learn from Acharyal. As Vaishnavaites say, ‘Swayam Acharya Purushan’, Periyava also grew up that way. Having done Gayathri Upasanai the previous day, Periyava did the final rites for His Guru the next day.
In those days amongst Brahmin families, there used to be a saying – ‘Naadu Paathi, Nangavaram Paathi’. Do you know what is the meaning ?
There was a person by name Nangavaram Jameen Rajappa Iyer. He owned over 15000 acres on the banks of the Kaveri. Within the next few decades, all that went away. His family members helped set up a Paathashalai in Mahendramangalam, arranged for scholars to come there and made all arrangements for Him to read and understand scriptures. Periyava mastered all of that. In other words, it is said that it was Nangavaram Jameen and Udayarpalayam Jameen who made all arrangements for Periyava’s Vidyabhyasam !
As and when Periyava’s Tapas, Yatras, lectures and His fame spread amongst the people, the Matham also began to prosper. There are scores of people who came to know of Periyava’s greatness and helped the Matham. In spite of that, Periyava would be very careful when it came to money matters. Many big shots would come and dump huge amounts of money at Periyava’s Feet; but Periyava would not take from everybody. He would know from whom to accept and from whom not to accept. In those days itself, there was a person who came forward to donate Rs.one crore. But Periyava did not accept it. Such was Periyava’s greatness.
Periyava would accept donations in the form of fruits, rice and dhals. He would not even touch donations in the form of money. He has gone walking in thousands of villages. Periyava would halt in places like bus stations, schools, river banks, under trees, never caring for material facilities !
We would also stay along with Him. We would carry items like rice and dhal for cooking purposes. Once, officers at a check post near Chittoor confiscated the only rice bag that was with us. “These are Government regulations, just give it”, said Periyava. We were worried as to what we would do for the next meal. This news somehow reached the then CM of Andhra – NT Rama Rao, and he was greatly perturbed. Not only did he order that the rice bag be returned, he also came to Periyava and personally apologized. Such was his respect towards Periyava.
Periyava responded, “What is there to apologize ? Government officials just did their job”.
HE would frequently say, “It is very important for us to ensure that the respect they have for the Matham is justified”. Pattabhi Sir would narrate this, thrilled. He also went on to relate some of the interactions Periyava had with other Mahans
There was a great Mahan by name, Thirukkoyilur Gnanananda Giri Swami. The place He stayed in was known as Thapovanam. He was a Mahan who knew the past, present and future. Sitting in one place, He has saved countless of his devotees and blessed them. HE would have a smile on His face always. HE was divinity personified. HE is the sole reason for the popularity of today’s Namasankeerthanams.
Once, people who came to take His Darshan and people who used to stay there itself became worried. The reason was that He was sitting motionless for days together. People were terrified. When He did not move for 5-6 days, was it not natural for people to get scared ?
Devotees did not know whom to go and ask about this. They were very sad to see Swamigal in that state. Then somebody suggested to go to Kanchi Periyava and ask Him about this. A small group started and went to Periyava and related the current state of GnananandaGiri Swami.
Having listened to everything, Periyava said, ‘There is nothing to worry. Nothing has happened to Him. HE is in Samadhi state. Spread some Sambrani smoke around Him. That is one kind of Aradhanai. HE will wake up from Samadhi state”. The devotees were supremely happy.
Glad that nothing had happened to Swami, they rushed back to Thirukkoyilur. As instructed by Periyava, they spread Sambrani smoke around Him and did Aradhanai. After that, Gnanananda Giri Swami came back from Samadhi state.
Once, when Periyava had gone to Thiruvannamalai, He was doing Giri Pradakshanam. Some 4-5 people had gone along with Him. Just then, a few disciples of Ramana Maharishi came from the opposite direction carrying Bikshai vessels. Having prostrated themselves in front of Periyava, they introduced themselves as Bagavan Ramana Maharishi’s disciples and told Him that Bagavan was there in His Ashram. Having acknowledged that by a nod of His head and a smile, Periyava continued to walk after blessing them.
Ramana’s disciples stood there for some time looking at Periyava and started thereafter. They were a little sad since Periyava had not asked anything about Ramanar or enquired after His well being.
They climbed the hill, handed over the Bhikshai to Ramanar and told Him about Periyava’s Darshan on their way and expressed their sadness
Hearing that, apparently, Ramana laughed out loud. “Oh silly fellows, the both of Us have already spoken. In fact we speaking even now. Are you really sad because of this ?” His devotees stood there stunned.
A sumangali mami, around 87-88 witnessed all this personally and narrated all this to me. I just melted.
Kanchi Periyava and Ramana are Maha Gnanis, Tapasvis. We were so happy and thrilled to learn that the both of them were in communion all the time.
Paul Brunton came to Maha Periyava to talk about spiritual matters. Then Periyava told him, “HE is going on the Gnana Margam and I’m going on the Karma Margam. The person who can answer all your questions is in Tiruvannamalai. Only HE can clear all your doubts”, and sent him to Ramanar. Paul Brunton accordingly then went to meet Ramanar, got all his doubts cleared, became His devotee and even wrote a book.
If Periyava and Ramanar did not have mutual affection for each other, would this have happened ? In short, we are lucky that such great Mahans like Periyava and Ramanar were born in this country
Inspite of our grave limitations, and smallness, we are really most fortunate to be the part of this great heritage of Karmayogies, Bhaktiyogies, and Gnanayogies.Even now millions of us believe in their hearts that these Mahatmas will save us, guide us, lead us from darkness to light, and liberate us from the cycle of death and birth.

Mr Paul Brunton, being an englishmen,very greatly blessed soul.
He got the best from both the Rishi’s, shows that there is no frontiers/
boundries for a true baktha, in his search for the Grace of the Guru & Almighty
Lord. Further more, in his book, he mentions that the night before meeting, Sri Maharishi, Sri Paramacharyal gave him Divine Darshan & blessed him,while he was
in his bed in the accommodation. What a Grace !
