Sudhaasootheyshchandropalajalalavairarghyarachanaa!
Svakeeyairambhobhihi Salilanidhisouhithyakaranam
Thvadeeyaabhirvaagbhisthava Janani Vaachaam Sthuthiriyam!”

Word-by-word meaning

  • He Vāchām Janani: O Mother who is the source of all speech! O Goddess of Speech!
  • Svakīyābhiḥ: With one’s own
  • Pradīpa-jvālābhiḥ: Flames of a lamp
  • Divasakara-nīrājana-vidhiḥ: Performing ārati to the Sun
  • Svakīyaiḥ: With his own
  • Chandropala-jala-lavaiḥ: Drops of water arising from the moonstone (Chandrakānta)
  • Sudhāsūteḥ: To the Moon
  • Arghya-rachanā: Making an offering of arghya
  • Svakīyaiḥ ambhobhiḥ: With its own waters
  • Salilanidhi-sauhitya-karaṇam: Satisfying or honoring the ocean
  • Tvadīyābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ: With words that are Yours
  • Tava iyam stutiḥ: This hymn of praise to You

Adi Shankara says with great humility that praising Ambika with the very power bestowed by Ambika is like offering the flame of a lamp to the brilliantly shining Sun.

He declares that this garland of verses could not have been composed by him except through the grace of the Divine Mother.

O Mother, the source of all words! I praise You with this garland of verses composed from the very words that You have bestowed upon me.

Doing so is like:

  • showing the light of a lamp to the Sun, who himself illuminates all the worlds;
  • offering arghya to the Moon, whose rays shower nectar, using water that flows from a moonstone under the Moon’s own influence; or
  • standing in the ocean, taking water belonging to the ocean itself, and offering that very water back to the Ocean to satisfy and honor it.

The essential idea is that everything used to praise the Divine Mother already belongs to Her and originates from Her.

The deeper significance

Several verses of Saundarya Lahari (15, 16, 17, 75 and 98) explain that knowledge and poetic ability arise in a devotee through the grace of Devi.

Therefore, composing a hymn to Devi using poetic power received from Devi herself might initially appear somewhat improper. It might be compared to receiving money freely from someone and then using that same money to honor the giver.

Yet this is exactly what happens in traditional worship.

At sacred times such as Uttarayana, we worship the Sun and offer camphor ārati. But the brilliance of that nīrājana ultimately belongs to the Sun himself.

After a lunar eclipse, water flowing from a Chandrakānta or moonstone is offered as arghya to the Moon.

Likewise, on sacred occasions, after bathing in the ocean, we take seawater itself and offer it as arghya to the Lord of the Ocean.

In the same way, there is nothing improper about worshipping Devi through the eloquence and poetic ability that arose through Devi’s own grace.

With this thought, Adi Shankara brings this magnificent hymn to its conclusion.

The humility expressed in the final verse

According to the explanation, reciting this single verse is said to confer the merit of reciting all 100 verses of Saundarya Lahari.

Above all, this verse embodies vinaya sampat, the wealth of humility.

Saundarya Lahari, this “Wave of Beauty,” overflows with the subtleties of Mantra Shastra, incomparable similes, elegance of expression, richness of meaning, philosophical exposition and the highest spiritual ideals.

Yet after offering this magnificent garland of poetry to the Divine Mother, Sri Shankara Bhagavatpada ends not by claiming authorship or greatness, but by expressing complete freedom from ego.

By saying:

“This hymn to You has been composed with words that are Yours,”

he acknowledges that even the words with which he praises the Goddess originate from the Goddess herself.

The commentary also sees in this declaration an expression of the Acharya’s Advaitic state of mind, where the distinction between giver, gift and receiver ultimately disappears.

Traditional benefits attributed to this verse

The commentary states that repeated recitation of this verse is believed to bring benefits such as:

  • relief from illnesses,
  • attainment of desired objectives, and
  • success in one’s endeavors.

Essence of the verse

The entire teaching can be condensed into one beautiful thought:

“O Divine Mother, even the words with which I praise You are Your gift. My praise adds nothing to Your glory. I am merely offering back to You what was Yours from the beginning, just as one offers light to the Sun, the Moon’s own water to the Moon, or the ocean’s own water to the ocean.”

Thus concludes Saundarya Lahari, bestowed by Sri Shankara Bhagavatpada Acharya.
