Prananthum Sthothum Vaa Kathamakruthapunyaha Prabhavathi!”

O Mother, who is endowed with the six divine attributes of supreme lordship!

Shiva, who is associated with all that is auspicious,

देवः – தே³வ꞉ – the great Lord Mahadeva,

शक्‍त्या – ஶக்த்யா – with the power of Shakti, the power of creation of the universe,

युक्तः – யுக்த꞉ – united with,

भवति यदि – ப⁴வதி யதி³ – if he is,

प्रभवितुं – ப்ரப⁴விதும்ʼ – to be the Lord and source of power for the creation of the universe,

शक्तः – ஶக்த꞉ – he becomes capable.

एवं न चेत् – ஏவம்ʼ ந சேத் – if he is not united with this power of universal creation,

स्पन्दितुमपि – ஸ்பந்தி³துமபி – even to move slightly,

कुशलो न खलु – குஶலோ ந க²லு – he is certainly not capable,

अतः – அத꞉ – therefore,

हरिहरविरिञ्चादिभिरपि – ஹரிஹரவிரிஞ்சாதி³பி⁴ரபி – even by the gods Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma, and others,

You,

अकृतपुण्यः – அக்ருʼதபுண்ய꞉ – one who has not accumulated merit through virtuous deeds in previous births,

प्रणन्तुं – ப்ரணந்தும்ʼ – to bow down and offer salutations with the body, speech, and mind,

स्तोतुं वा – ஸ்தோதும்ʼ வா – or to praise You through hymns,

कथं प्रभवति – கத²ம்ʼ ப்ரப⁴வதி – how can such a person possibly be capable?

O Mahashakti! When Mahadeva, who embodies all auspiciousness, remains inseparably united with You, He becomes the Lord of the entire process of universal creation. When separated from You, He is not even capable of the slightest movement.

Therefore, how can a person who has not accumulated great merit in previous births be capable of offering salutations to You with body, speech, and mind, or of praising You, when You are worthy of worship even by the principal deities such as Vishnu, Rudra, and Maheshwara?

Adi Shankara states right at the beginning, in the very first verse, that one must have accumulated merit in previous births in order to worship Ambika and undertake Her spiritual practice. Akṛta-puṇyaḥ means one who has not performed immeasurable meritorious deeds in past births; praṇantum, stotum vā means one who has not been blessed with the opportunity to offer salutations or praise Her through speech.

Even the very desire to worship Ambika requires the merit of previous births. Parama Shiva depends upon Your grace to perform creation, preservation, and dissolution. When He is not united with You, He does not even possess the capacity to move.

If Sri Shankara Bhagavatpada, with such humility, asks what qualification he possesses to bow down to You with his body, praise You with his speech, or meditate upon You with his mind, then we have even less qualification to contemplate such a question. However, as children of Ambika, we have the privilege of approaching Her with love and devotion and must seek to receive Her compassion.

Bhagavatpada praises Ambika as being superior to all the other deities. He also reveals a subtle way to gain Her attention right at the outset. He begins this very work with the name of Shiva, Ambika’s consort, using the word Shiva.

Just as he began the Saundaryalahari with Shiva’s name, Adi Shankara begins the Shivanandalahari with a name that signifies Shakti. The Shivanandalahari begins with the syllable ka in the words ‘kalābhyāṁ cūḍālaṅkṛta śaśikalābhyāṁ’.

Ambika, the embodiment of supreme auspiciousness, has the syllable ka, the first syllable of the Panchadashi Mantra, as Her essential form. When Parameshwara Himself derives His role as the cause of the universe through Ambika, what further proof is needed to establish that She is the Supreme Deity? Ambika is worthy of worship by all the deities.

By repeatedly chanting this first verse, all obstacles are destroyed, all undertakings succeed as desired, and even difficult problems are resolved. Female devotees facing severe marital problems will be able to bring issues under their control / curb abusive tendencies in husband. If living in a joint family, there will be harmony between female devotee and in-laws. This sloka could help females even in work atmosphere, in gatherings etc.
