Dr.T.M.P.Mahadevan

Inertness, animality, impurity and crookedness of movement are not in me, O God! Even if they be, O Crescent-crested One, am I not fit to serve as Thy ornament?

The devotee tells the Lord that he is fit to be accepted by Him. The very fact that he is a devotee shows that there are no blemishes in him. He has intelligence, himanity, purity, and straight-forwardness as the governing virtues. Even supposing that the devotee does not possess these virtues, but only the opposite vices, Siva has no right to reject him. For, has He not accepted as adornments inert, non-human, impure and crooked objects, such as hides, deer, bull, crescent-moon, and serpents?

Or, all these defects may be regarded as belonging to the screscent-moon. Siva is pleased to wear the extremely defective moon as His head-ornament. Why, then, should not the devotee claim to be accepted by Him? The devotee’s character, certainly, does not have so many blemishes as the moon’s.

Chandra (moon) is the masculine gender. There are different versions of the circumstance which led to Siva’s acceptance of Candra as head-ornament. One of them is as follows: Dakssa, one of the first agents of creation (Prajapati), gave his twenty-seven daughters (stars) in marriage to Candra, on condition that Candra should treat them all alike, without showing favouritism to any. But Candra developed a special attachment to Rohini. The other sisters got piqued and complained to their father. Daksa flew into a rage and cursed Candra saying that he would get wasted, that he would loose one of his kalAs each day, and that when all the sixteen kalAs vanished he would fade away. On the Sixteenth day, there was only one kalA left. Candra took refuge in the Lord. The Lord accepted him and placed him on his head as an ornament. By His grace, Candra began to regain his lost kalAs at the rate of one each day. The Lord willed that Daksa’s curse also should not go in vain. Therefore, he decreed that the waxing and waning of the moon should alternate.

According to another theory, a curse fell upon Candra because he had sought to defile the bed of his teacher’s wife.

Swami Tapasyananda

I am not dull unlike the moon on newmoon day (jatata). I have no kinship with brutes unlike the moon who has the hare in its heart (pasuta). I am not soiled with impurities unlike the lunar disc with its stains (kalankita). I have no crookedness in me unlike the moon noted for its irregular course (kutilacaratvam). Even if I have any of these, am I not, O Thou who wearest the moon on Thy crest, fit to be Thy ornament just like the moon?

(The moon has all the defects mentioned – Jatata, Pasuta, Kalankita and Kutilacaratvam. Yet the Lord Siva has the crescent moon as an ornament in his matter hair. The devotee therefore pleads that, whether he has these defects or not, he is fit to be accepted by the Lord.)

Commentary

Hey! Swaprakaasa swaroopanE!
जडता = having the quality of jatam;
कलंकिता = a blot called ‘गुरुतल्पगमनम् ‘ (stealing the teacher’s wife and having intercourse with her);
कुटिलचरत्वं च = possessing the nature of awkward motion;
मयि नास्ति = not with me;
Hey! Chandrakalaadharaa!
अस्ति यदि = if I have the above mentioned faults;
भवदाभरणस्य = to become your ornament;
पात्रम् = vessel;
नास्मि किं = won’t I be?

“Hey! Chandrakalaadharaa! Because of his jadathwam (foolishness), pasuthwam (bruteness) and guruthalpagamanam (being completely inconsiderate to the Guru – see note below) Chandra has kalangathwam (fault-riddenness) and kutilacharathwam (proneness to move hapazardly)(crooked behavior). You have taken him on your head because of these faults of him. I on the other hand have no faults to speak of. Is it because of my faultlessness that I am not taken by you as an ornament? Could you not take this faultlessness itself as a fault and take me as an ornament?”

Note: Dhaksha Prajapathi had sixty daughters. Out of them twentyseven were stars and Prajapathi married them off to Chandra and asked him to treat them all equally. However, Chandra was more fond of RohiNi and this enraged his other wives who complained to their father Dhaksha. Dhaksha in his anger cursed Chandra that he would start losing his kalas one after the other. Just about the time he was left with one Kala Chandra surrendered to Siva who took him on his head as an ornament and because of that his lost kalas started coming back. And in order that Dhaksha’s curse is not in vain Siva allowed that the losing and regaining of the kalaas in Chandra to take place alternatively.

Also chandra had a misdemeanor with his Guru Brihaspati. He had an affair with Tara the Guru’s wife when the Guru was away and had a child (Budha) from her. Of course Tara voluntarily went to Chandra and Chandras accepted her. Eventually at the intervention of Brahma Tara returned to Brihaspati but left the child Budha with Chandra as it was his. Brihaspati was disappointed by the behaviour of his wife who never gave him a child.
