Sri Soundaryalahari is one of the finest compositions of Sri Adi Sankara. There are several commentaries to this work. Each Shloka is considered to have Mantric potency. Sri Mahaperiyava has dealt with this subject extensively in Volume 6 of Deivathin Kural. If one reads Deivathin Kural Volume 6 – Soundaryalahari chapters – one can conclude, no other commentary, pravachanam or presentation can even come near this. Such will be the joy in reading it. I firmly believe, the even the best of the translations will not be equivalent to the Original.
Among the Tamil Commentaries, the one by Sastra Ratnagara Sri Thethiyur Subramanya Sastrigal is an illustrious one. He was a great Upasaka, Tapasvi and Gyani. Both Kanchi and Sringeri Acharyas held him in High Esteem. His Tamil Commentary of Soundaryalahari is worth reading several times. In the Introduction, when writing about the efficacy of Soundaryalahari Stotras, Sri Sastrigal uses the term तप्तपरशु ग्रहण. [Tapta Parasu Grahana]: Tapta – Redhot; Parasu – Axe or Iron bar, Grahana – Holding it. He says, the efficacy of the Shlokas can be assured with Tapta Parasu Grahana, meaning one can swear by holding a Redhot Iron that the Parayana of Soundaryalahari will yield results. The TaptaParasu [Red hot iron] will not hurt because what is said is SATYAM.

இவ்விதமிருக்க இந்த நூலை ஒவ்வொரு ச்லோகமாகப் படித்து தேவியை ஸந்தோஷிக்கச் செய்கிறவர்களுக்கு ஸர்வ ஸெளபாக்யமும் ஏற்படும் என்பதில் கொஞ்சமேனும் ஸந்தேஹமே இல்லை. ரோக நிவ்ருத்தியிலோ துர்தேவதைகளை விரட்டுதல்களிலோ, சத்ருக்களை ஜயிப்பதிலோ, கல்வி பயிற்சியை அடைவதிலோ, அபம்ருத்யுவை பரிஹாரம் செய்து கொள்வதிலோ, ஸகலவிதமான அரிஷ்டத்தையும் பரிஹாரம் செய்து கொள்வதிலும், ஸகலவிதமான இஷ்டங்களையும் அடைவதிலும் இந்த நூலைப்போல் ஒவ்வொரு க்ருஹத்திலும் இருத்து வரவேண்டிய சிந்தாமணி வேறு ஒன்றுமே இல்லை. ஆகையால் ஸகல ஜனங்களும் ஸ்தோத்ர க்ரந்த பாராயண மூலமாக ஸகலவிதமான அரிஷ்ட நிவ்ருத்தியை ஸம்பாதித்துக் கொண்டு மேன்மேலும் ஸெளபாக்யத்துடன் கூடினவர்களாக ஆவார்கள் என்ற விஷயத்தில் தப்தபரசுக்ரஹண மூலமாக சபதம் செய்யலாம்.

There is no doubt that doing Parayana of each shloka of Soundaryalahari will shower all auspiciousness. Be it getting rid of any disease, or driving away evil spirits (Durdevataas), or attainment of Knowledge, or protection from untimely death, or getting rid of all kinds of hurdles, or obtaining all wishes – there is no other book, which is like Chintamani (wish granting Gem) than Soundaryalahari. So one should earnestly seek to learn and do paarayanam of this Stotra and live a live with full of Sowbhagyam (Ambal’s Grace), and we can swear this with Tapta Parasu Grahana.
On this auspicious VijayaDasami day, one should embark on a learning journey and seek to learn this Gem of Stotra (Stotra Ratna). May Durga, Lakshmi Saraswati Devata bless us with Courage, Ambudance and Widsdom.
