Dr.T.M.P.Mahadevan

O Lord of souls! Are not Thou, who art the Lord, the greatest friend of the poor. And, of them, I am the foremost. Is not this, then, the relationship between us? O Siva! All my transgressions should be forgiven by Thee alone. Even through effort, protection should be given to me. This, indeed, is the way pursued by relations.

Here the devotee defines his relationship to God. He feels that by himself he is nothing; of the poor, he is the poorest. God is the Lord of lords; above Him there is none. It is the soul’s right to claim protection. And, it is God’s duty to grant it. No offense that the soul has committed can free God from His obligation; for, it is His duty again to forgive the souls of all its sins.

Swami Tapasyananda

O Lord of creatures! Art Thou not the Almighty as also the greatest friend of the miserable, of whom I am the chief? Is there not, then, a close kinship between us two? Therefore, O Though bestower of good, Thou shouldst forgive me all my transgressions and work for my salvation even if it be fraught with difficulty. For this is the test of close relationship everywhere.

Commentary

Aum

In this sloka AachaaryaaL uses two important epithets to describe Parameswara. They are ‘Prabhu’ and ‘Bandhu’. Let us see the significance of these two words.

Hey! Parameswara! How can I describe your superior Prabhutvam? By the mere wish you create all the kaaryams, destroy them and then bring them back – such is the creativity of you O Prabhu! If anyone is to be called a Prabhu it is you only as you are the Prabhu of all Prabhus. Can anyone adequately describe the Prabhutvam of Sri Ramachandramurthy? Who can describe His vaibhavam, His endless KaruNa, His multitudes of Shaktis, His beauty par-excellence? But when you consider Sri Raghava, He:

(Sri Rama in Vaalmiki Ramayanam)

“A person who has come as a friend cannot be given up. Even if he has fault, good people do not mind it. If a person declares that he has surrendered to me, I would protect him from the fear of all beings.”

Raghava says to Seetha on his way from Lanka, flying in Pushpaka Vimaana, pointing out to Rameswaram, अत्र पूर्वं महादेवः प्रसादमकरोत् प्रभुः “Here is where Mahaprabhu Mahaadeva graced me when I came to defeat Ravana.”

He said: “Hey! Sithe! At this place only before I crossed over to Lanka, I did pooja to that SarvalokasaraNyan, Devaatideva, Mahaaprabhu Parameswara and got his prasaadam. He is the only and real Prabhu. Look at Him and attain the indescribeable Ananda!

That Shakti to save deenajanas takes you alone as its abode, yet

You may ask me: “I have those Sruti and Smriti of my आज्ञ्यारूपं  that you are to observe but you have deliberately violated them (उल्लङ्घनं ) and have started your karmas in whatever manner you had liked and had spent your days. When such is the case how can I do रक्षा of you?” In this connection you please kindly listen to me. Please do not turn me away.

Hey PrabhO! You are not only a Prabhu but you are the Prabhu of all dheena janaas especially you are my only Bhandhu. I stand at the top of the lineup of all dheena janas. Because of this there has happened between us a relationship called I admit to have done उल्लङ्घनं of all the sruti and smriti injunctions but you are my bandhu:

Therefore for this simple reason, you are my bandhu you save me.  When you do so, no one will challenge you because you are the most superior Prabhu and there is no Prabhu greater than you.

Ramayana gives another example of ‘Bandhu’. Sri Raghava said to Parasurama: ” Hey! Parasurama! Because you are a Brahmana you deserve poojanam by me. More imporatantly you have become a bandhu to my Guru Viswamitra. This is the reason I have become an asaktan in taking away your praaNa.”  Thus because he became bandhu Sri Rama let off Parasurama. Is this not the siddhaantham of mahaans that bandhus cannot be given up? Do I have to bring all these to your attention?

Therefore, hey! Prabho! please do tolerate and forgive me for all my faults because I am your bandhu.  I am endlessly begging you to protect me so that you will take your precious efforts to save me.  I admit I am a mahaa paapi. Yet I surrender to you! Please dont ask me about each and every violations that I have committed.  I will have no answer for those questions.  Besides it is your responsibility to disregard all my aparaathas and protect me.  Thus hey! PrabhO! I have amply explained my dheenabhaavam and your prabuthvam. Giving due regard to this it is your responsibility to protect and save me from the perils of samsaara.

This is the way all the jeevas cry out to ParamEswara as AathmabhandhO! DheenabhandO! MaargabhandhO! LokabhandhO! ParamabhandhO! AapathbhaandhO! and so on.

Anyone who says this sloka in sivasannidhi and do namaskaaram to Him, he would be saved from all the sins.

SivOham, sivOham.
