NLC India is a central public sector company who runs a few coal mines. Little did we know they also grow pure native breed cows for agricultural purposes. We got an open auction notice last week regarding 37 pure native breed male calves on Dec 30, 2024 by NLC.
Looking at the list below, the average age of a calf is around 1.5 years old, few are 7 or 8 months old. The reality of the situation is male calves have no way out except the cruel path of no return. Also, based on my experience over the past few years, Gosalas do not come to participate in these auctions due to two reasons: a) they are completely full b) they do not have the funds to buy these cows. That leaves the field open for butchers. The calves might be cuddling in the comforts of their mothers and come Dec 31 they will all be gone in a crude manner we could possibly ever imagine, unless we do something about it.
However, we have an opportunity to rescue these poor calves by participating in this auction. All we need is around Rs. 12k per calf so we can save them keep them happy for life. If we get the required funds, we will be going to Neiveli in person to participate in the auction. If anyone wants to join us, please feel to do so. After rescue, the calves will be transported to Dhyan Foundation, Coimbatore.
