Appeal for funds for Rig Veda Patasala at Mannargudi

Sri Mannargudi Periyava and the gruham where Sri Mannargudi Periyava Lived

Mannargudi founded by Cholas in the 7th century is at present an important town in Tamil Nadu belonging to the erstwhile composite Tanjore Dist. It is a sacred Divya Desam with Sri Rajagopala Swamy as the presiding deity.

Sri Mannargudi Periaval (alias Sri Raju Sastrigal) was a great scholar of Vedas & Sastras being a descendent of Srimad Appayya Dikshidar of Adayapalam. Sri Mannargudi Periaval was the only ‘Grahasthar’ (family man) to be addressed as “Periaval” as mentioned by Sri Kanchi Mahaswamigal (Deivathin Kural – Voice of God).

Sri Mannargudi Periaval was conferred the title of Mahamahopadyaya in the year 1887 by the British Government and the then Tanjore Collector personally visited his house to confer the title as Sri Sastry declined to go to Delhi for receiving the award.

Sri Mannargudi Periaval taught Vedam, Sastram, Srowtham, Grantham & Anushtanams for thousands of students for over six decades in Mannargudi till he breathed last at the age of 88 in 1U03.

To perpetuate Sri Mannargudi Periaval’s memory and popularize his thirty literary works, Pujyasri Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswati Sankaracharya Swamigal of Mollamnaya Sarvagnya Peetham Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham converted the house of Sri Mannargudi Periaval, dedicating it for propagating Vedas and Sastras. Every year during the Jayanthi celebrations of Sri Mannargudi Periaval, Veda/Sastra Sadhas are conducted.

Under the guidance of Jagadguru Pujyasri Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswati Sankaracharya Swamigal, present peethadhipati of Moolamnaya Sarvagnya Peetham Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, it is proposed to start a Rig Veda Patasala in Mannargudi Periaval’s house.

The infrastructure required for housing a Veda Patasala with free boarding and lodging needs to be built as the present centuries-old tile, roofed house can mainly be used only as Vedic class room.

Kalavai Guruparampara Veda Vidya Trust (sponsored by Sri Kanchi Mutt in 1UUG) , which currently maintains Rig, Yajur and Sama Veda pathasalas in eighteen locations with a 300 Vidyarthis and 25 Veda teachers, has been blessed by Sri Kanchi Periaval to start and maintain a Rig Veda Patasala at this divine place.

It is estimated that an outlay of Rs. 20.00 lakhs is required to build 800 Sq. Ft. facility for boarding and lodging of Vidyarthis.

We earnestly appeal to the descendants of Srimad Appayya Dikshidar, Sri Mannargudi Periaval and philanthropists inclined to support the preservation and propagation of Vedas and Sastras to participate financially and support this divine cause and be the recipient of Sri Periaval’s blessings.
