Narayaneeyam day and one dashakam a day parayanam

Sriman Narayaneeyam which is considered as Srimad Bhagavatha Saaram (the essence of Srimad Bhagavatha purana) was completed and offered to Sri Guruvayurappan by Sri Narayana Bhattathri on the 28th day of a Vrischika month, centuries ago. This day is celebrated every year as Narayaneeyam day in Guruvayur temple.

This year Narayaneeyam Day is falling on December 13 2020. To commemorate this event, devotees of Guruvayurappan do daily Parayanam of one dashakam from narayaneeyam for 100 days, so that, the 100th Dasakam coincides with the Narayaneeyam day.

This year to do this one dashakam a day parayanam, the first dashakam should be read on 5th Sep 2020, 2nd dashakam on 6th Sep and so on. Narayaneeyam audio recording and lyrics, dashakam by dashakam with navigation links can be found here -> Sriman Narayaneeyam audio recording and lyrics

Narayaneeyam narrates a series of episodes from the Bhagavata Purana, choosing the most pious of the lot. The incarnations of Vishnu are traced with piety, Bhattathiri transforms the episodes into solemn prayers, pouring out his soul in total supplication before the Lord. The final dasakam, Kesadipaada Varnanam, embodies top-to-toe picture of little Krishna in all grace and glory.

Both as a poem and as a devotional hymn, Narayaneeyam occupies a very high place in Sanskrit literature. The poet depicts the image of Lord Guruvayurappan, in exemplary terms – “Sammohanam Mohanath, Kantham Kanthinidhanathopi, Madhuram Madhurya Dhuryadapi, Soundaryotharathopi Sundaratharam”

The “Parayanam” of Narayaneeyam possesses the power of healing afflictions, both mental and physical, of the devotees. The “Nithyaparayanam” of Narayaneeyam will enable the devotees to attain ” Ayurarogyasoukhyam”.

  9. Sriman Narayaneeyam is in some respects more convenient for ‘parayanam’ than Srimad Bhagavatam itself. Bhattathiri has given the essence of both the devotional and philosophical aspects, while doing away with numerous details and detours by way of side stories.
When exactly was Narayaneeyam completed and offered at the feet of Guruvayurappan?
The last stanza of the last dashakam holds the key! In fact, the very concluding words “ayur arogya saukhyam” are the key!
Swami Tapasyananda of RK order has stated in his translation of Narayaneeyam as under:

“The expression ‘Ayurarogya-saukhyam’with which the Narayaneeyam ends is a code word according to Indian astronomical calculation. In addition to its obvious meaning ‘Longevity, health and happiness’ it indicates the date of completion of the Narayaneeyam according to Kali era. It is read as indicating
27,12,200th day of Kali Yuga, which is supposed to have started with Sri Krishna’s demise, 5077 years +
215 days before 1st January 1976. The above Kali days converted into Christian era will give 27th Nov. 1587 according to some or 23rd Sunday 1588 according to others as the date of the completion of the composition of the Narayaneeyam”
(See: Narayaneeyam Translation: Notes on 100.10. p.350)
[This is Vrischikam 28th of the year 683 of Kollam Era. See Introduction, p.x]
Bhattathiri is supposed to have completed it in his 27th year.

While Bhattathiri gave the essence of the whole Bhagavata in an admirable manner, for some reason he did not include the history of Jada Bharata, This lacuna was rectified by Brahmasri Sengalipuram Anantarama Dikshitar who composed a Dashakam on Jada Bharata in the same style followed by Bhattathiri. This was read and announced in the temple at the time of Nirmalya Darshanam. This is included in Sri Dikshitar’s commetary on Sriman Narayaneeyam..
I am mentioning this for the benefit of those who might feel like including this also in their parayanam..

    • Thank you. Always learning from your comments. 🙏

    • Dear Sir,

Jada Bharath is an interesting and cautionary tale. Inspite of reading about Self a thousand times our mind is not detached from the unreal to focus on Real. He hD said we should strive to bring the knowledge to Realiization. But we who are besieged by so many problems and worries cannot sit our mind for a second to think about the One who is ever present in all three states .

It is cruel karma and will if the supreme that we suffer it seems like
