கட்டெல்லாம் விட்ட பரம ஸ்வதந்த்ர நிலையிருந்த ஞானியும் சாஸ்திரக் கட்டுப்பாட்டுப்படிச் செய்து மற்றவர்களையும் அதேபோலச் செய்வித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தபோதே தேசம் ஆத்மிகமாக மட்டுமில்லாமல், இப்போது ஸயன்ஸ் என்பதில் வரும் அநேக வித்யைகள், வியாபாரம் (கடல் கடந்தெல்லாம் கூடப் போய் வாணிபம் பண்ணியிருக்கிறார்கள்) எல்லாவற்றிலும் உன்னதமாயிருக்கிறது. “லோகம் பொய்; ஆத்மா, ஆத்மா” என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டு ஸயன்ஸிலும், பொருளாதாரத்திலும் நாம் பிற்பட்டு நின்றதாகச் சொல்வதற்கு கொஞ்சங்கூட ஆதாரமில்லை. துருக்கர்கள், பிரிட்டிஷ்காரர்கள் ஆகியவர்களுடைய ஆதிக்கத்தில்தான் ஹிந்து ஸமுதாயம் ஒடுங்கி இவற்றில் backward state வந்ததே தவிர அதனுடைய மதாசாரத்தாலும் ஃபிலாஸஃபியாலும் அல்ல. கட்டுப்பட்டிருந்தாலே சுத்தியாகக்கூடிய ஸாமானிய ஜனங்களையும் ஸ்வதந்திரம் என்று அவிழ்த்து விட்டிருக்கும் இப்போதோ எல்லாவற்றிலும் கீழேதான் போய்க் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம். “பாரமார்த்திமாகக் கீழே போகிறோம் என்று வேண்டுமானால் சொல்லுங்கள்; ஸயன்ஸில், காமர்ஸில் அபிவிருத்திதான் ஆகியிருக்கிறோம். Atom research, electronics எல்லாங்கூட கரைத்துக் குடித்து விட்டோமாக்கும்” என்று சொல்லலாம். ஆனால் நம்முடைய moral standard கீழே போய்விட்டதென்று மற்ற தேசத்தார் – இதுவரை நம் தேசத்தை தர்மபூமி என்று கொண்டாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தவர்கள் -அபிப்ராயப்பட ஆரம்பித்தபின் இவற்றில் நாம் முன்னேறி என்ன பிரயோஜனம்? ‘காமர்ஸ்’ ஜாஸ்தியாச்சு என்று நாம் பெருமைப்பட்டாலும் இறக்குமதி செய்கிற அந்நியர்கள் சொல்வதைக் கேட்டால் அவமானமாயிருக்கிறது. “இந்த இந்தியர்கள் முதலில் காட்டுகிற ‘ஸாம்பிள்’ ஒன்றாயிருக்கிறது; அப்புறம் அனுப்பி வைக்கிற சரக்கு வேறாயிருக்கிறதே! நாணயமில்லாமல் நடக்கிறார்களே!” என்கிறார்கள். ஸயன்ஸ் அபிவிருத்தியில் பரஸ்பரம் தெரியாததைத் தெரிந்து கொண்டு, கூடச் சேர்ந்து ஆராய்ச்சி பண்ணுவதற்கும் நம்மை அவ்வளவாக நம்பமாட்டேனென்கிறார்கள் என்று கேள்வி. முன் நாளில் கட்டுப்பாட்டால் ஏற்பட்ட தர்மபலம் என்கிற அஸ்திவாரத்தின் மேலேயே விஞ்ஞான வித்யைகள், வியாபாரம் எல்லாம் நல்ல பெயரோடு விருத்தியாயின. அஸ்திவார பலம் இல்லாமல் இப்போது இவற்றில் ஏற்படுவதாகச் சொல்லப்படும் முன்னேற்றம் [நிலைத்து] நிற்காது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்
When the enlightened one, who was actually not subject to any restrictions and was free, also chose to perform the requisite rituals in order to set an example to the common populace, the country flourished not only in spiritual matters but also in different branches of science and commerce (trade was conducted even across the seas). Though our philosophy emphasized on the impermanence of the world and the realization of the soul (Aathma), there is no proof that we lagged behind in science and economics. Only with Islamic and British dominance, the country was pushed to a backward state in these areas and not due to its religious traditions or philosophy. The common populace can attain a state of purity even with certain restrictions. But we have let them loose in the name of freedom and sliding down in all the areas. One may state that our downfall has been only in the spiritual areas and in fact we are progressing in the areas of sciences and attained expertise in electronics, atomic research but this is of no use since those nations who had eulogized us as the land of ethics (dharma bhoomi) for our moral standards are commenting on our moral deterioration. Though we may pride ourselves on the expansion of commerce, it is very shameful to hear the accusation from our exporters that we initially show a good quality of sample products and on final consignment deliver inferior qulaity. In matters of science, I come to hear that people of other nations are not ready to trust us and conduct collaborative research with us involving exchange of ideas. In the days of yore science and commerce flourished on the strong foundation of moral strength, the result of traditional restrictions.
