Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – I’m going to narrate a couple of incidents that happened over the last couple of days. It may sound a bit brutal but I’m not exaggerating anything even a bit. Please read. Rama Rama
Friday – Nov 22, 3PM
While at work I got a call from my cow contacts asking me to look at a cow that is going to be sold to an abattoir near Navalur/Sholinganallur. I went with him to see the cow. There was some miscommunication between my cow contact and the cow owner as the owner told me he is not planning to sell the cow for slaughter (since she is milking decently) but only to people who will nurture it. I said that is fine and was ready to start back home when I saw another lone cow sitting in his cow shed. Passingly, I asked him how the other cow is doing and he dropped a bomb shell. He said that cow is milking only 2.5 liters and has already sold it for slaughter and got Rs. 3000 advance for it in the morning. He said the slaughter truck is coming and picking up the cow that evening or early tomm. morning. Sensing the urgency to save that cow, I offered him a higher price but he turned it down saying he cannot mess up his relations with cow mafia people. I told him to hold off and not to sell Mahalakshmi on an auspicious Friday….he thought a bit about what I said and called the slaughter guy over the phone in front of me and asked him if he is willing to take the advance back but the slaughter guy did not budge. He told him clearly he wanted the cow as he had paid the advance and he should to sell to him only. I begged, pleaded, told him about all the papa karmas that this will bring on him and his family. All in vain….
The Gho Matha (in the picture below) made her final journey to the slaughter house on late Friday evening from his home. Already her calves were separated from her when she was bought from the ‘Sandhai’ (market) and she was isolated. Though I have had quite a few close misses before, I did not see those cows or calves. Out of sight, out of mind so I could get over those incidents quickly and diverted my focus in saving other cows. In this case I saw this sweet cow who looked at me and lovingly rubbed her forehead against me when I went to caress her dewlap. Pity and unfortunate, I could not save her. Feeling absolutely gutted about it and I had a dreaded couple of nights thinking about her. I did not post this to make you all depressed but to pray for this Gho Matha’s final brutal passing away and also constantly remember about the kind of world we live in and make the most of our nara janma (human life) by doing sath kainkaryams as desired by our Periyava.
This hurt, however, is sure to sting me for a while…..

Sunday – Nov 24, 1.30 PM
Yesterday afternoon I got a call from the same guy who sent the Gho Matha to abbatoir on Friday. He told me there is another Gho Matha which he is going to sell to ‘bhai’ as he was in need of cash. Since I gave him a sermon the other day he checked with me to see if I will take it. I went over and bought her for 16k.
A note on the cow. She is Parama Sadhu which he bought from a ‘Sandhai’ (market) last week so he can sell at a slightly higher rate to another vendor or to an abattoir. Since there was no vendor to take the cow he decided to sell to abbatoir and remembered to ask me as we had just met a day back. She milks close to 4 litres per day without even him providing any food as she goes on her own for grazing to a nearby land and eats grass. If she had been taken care properly with Thavidu, Pottu, Punnakku, etc. she would milk a couple of liters more. She also has a lot of ‘Unni’ (kind of lice) all over her body as the prior owner who sold her in market did not bath her properly and this guy who had it for a week did not take care as well. When I bought the cow I asked him to give me the spray to deworm all these lices which sucks a lot of blood out of her. He told me the liquid costs Rs. 90 and reluctantly sprayed on her. I have kept the cow in a safe place near my home and will take care of her well including cleaning up the lices over the next few days before taking her to Gosala. Zoom over the picture posted right at the top and you will see lices all over dewlap, neck, legs, body, etc.
If a Mother and child (Cow and Calf) goes together to Sandhai (market) the first thing they do is separate them so they can be sold independently at a higher rate. The fate of the calf is really unknown as most of them end of up only in abattoir as there is a separate demand for veal. The cow will keep shedding tears thinking about her child as you see in the picture above and video clip below. Before starting back from his place, I also ruefully looked at the small shed where the other cow was sitting on Friday afternoon and was agonized to see it empty now.
Anyway it is Sri Periyava’s anugraham that at least we could rescue this parama sadhu cow from savage killing.
Note: In one of my prior rescue posts couple of readers mentioned the account was very gripping and adventurous to read which we really need to avoid. I totally agree with them but the reality when it comes to treating cows in our country and worse so all over the world is horrific to say the least. There may be exceptions but exceptions don’t make a rule. I’m sharing with you all on what I learn from every cow rescue that reveals the very dark side of the dairy industry.
