When Dec 31st comes, many go nuts 🙂 They sleep well on the afternoon on Dec 31st so that they could stay up beyond midnight; go to dinner with friends/families hang out till midnight; wish each other for new year and start to drive around to temples that are open. While these are one sets of “devotees”, shamefully, there are some temples that are open in midnight too. This is completely in contrast to our agama shastras. Temples are NOT supposed to open and close at the whims and fancies of the security guard or the temple authorities. Except for Vaikunta Ekadasi/Maha Shivarathiri etc, our sastras do not allow opening temples. HR&CE is hopeless and the temple authorities have also started to believe in Christian culture than ours – that is the sad state of us today.
English New Year is very important from our business, school perspective and all day-to-day functioning perspectives. Let us wish each other by properly addressing “Happy English New Year”. Beyond that, it has absolutely no meaning from our religious perspective – it is just another day. Someone drawn a line on that day and said to all of us that this is our New Year and we blindly follow this. Chinese don’t do these – to them, their new year supersedes everything. The first step to break this is to celebrate our own birthdays as per our panchangam. Mahaperiyava had talked extensively about the significance and glory of panchangam. Let us listen to Him.
Also standing in front of the god in the temple at midnight is not going to help/save us much if we don’t follow our anushtanams. While we are not here to correct the world – at least, we (the readers) follow our shastras and stay back home avoiding any midnight-mass! Let us all go to temple during the appropriate hours – let us not be brainless sheep – that’s all I am saying.

நமக்கென ஸ்வய கெளரவமும் ஸ்வய புத்தியும் இருக்க வேண்டாமா? எங்கே போச்சு நமது சுயமரியாதை?
நம்மில் பெரும்பாலானவர்கள் இதை நம் கலாச்சாரத்தின் அங்கமாக கருதி தங்கள் வீடுகளில்கூட இதைக் கொண்டாடுகின்றனர். சிலர் இந்தநாளின் மீது உணர்வுப் பூர்வமான நெருக்கத்தையும்கூட கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர்.
இதற்கு நமது மத ரீதியாக ஏதேனும் முக்கியத்துவம் உள்ளதா என சற்றே சிந்தித்துப் பார்ப்போம். துளியும் கிடையாது.

நமது ரிஷிகள் நமக்கு தந்ததல்லவா பஞ்சாங்கம். அதை உதாசினப்படுத்தலாமா? பல சூக்ஷ்மங்கள் அடங்கிய கணித சாஸ்த்ரத்தின் அடிப்படையிலும், ருதுக்கள், கிரஹங்கள் சஞ்சாரத்தின் அடிப்படையில் யுகம் யுகங்களாக வந்துள்ள நமது சாஸ்த்ரத்தை புறக்கணிக்கலாமா?
எதற்காக கோயில்களை நள்ளிரவு வரை திறந்து வைத்து, அபிஷேகம், திருமஞ்சனம் போன்ற சடங்குகளை மேற்கொள்கிறோம்? அகால நேரங்களில் பூஜைகள் செய்வது நமது ஆகம சாஸ்திரங்களுக்கு மிகவும் விரோதமானது.
கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் நள்ளிரவில் சர்ச்சுகளுக்கு சென்று வழிபாடு நடத்துகிறார்கள் என்றால், அவர்கள் மதத்தில் அவ்வாறு கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.
அதேபோல் நாமும் நமது மத சம்பிரதாயங்கள் எதைச் செய்யவேண்டும் என்றும் செய்யக்கூடாது என்று கூறுகிறதோ, அவ்வாறு நடந்துகொள்ள வேண்டாமா?
நடு நிசி ஆராதனைகள் (நள்ளிரவு வழிபாடுகள்) நடத்துவது நமது தர்மத்திற்கு எதிரானது என்பதை நாம் உணர்ந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும். நமது நாள் பிரம்மமுகூர்த்த நேரத்தில், அதாவது அதிகாலை தொடங்குகிறது.
நமது ஹிந்து சம்ஸ்காரங்கள் மற்றும் பஞ்சாங்கத்தின்படி வைகுண்ட ஏகாதசி மற்றும் சிவராத்திரி போன்ற ஒரு சில தினங்கள் தவிர மற்ற நாட்களில் அகால நேரங்களில் கோயில்களில் வழிபாடு நடத்துவது தடை செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.
பிரம்ம முகூர்த்தத்திற்கு முன்னதாக பூஜைகள் செய்வதோ வேதகர்மாக்களை செய்வதோ கிடையாது. இதை நாம் தெளிவாக புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்.
இல்லாத “புது வருடம்” என்கின்ற போர்வையில் நமது மக்கள், குறிப்பாக மேற்கத்திய நகரீக பித்து பிடித்து அலையும் சிலர், அடிக்கும் கூத்து தாங்க முடியவில்லை.
அதை விட கொடுமை, வயதானவர்களும் பலர் இவர்களுடன் சேர்ந்துக்கொண்டு இவர்களை உற்சாகப்படுத்தும் வகையில் நடந்துக்கொள்ளுவதுதான் வேதனையை அதிகப் படுத்துகின்றது.
