வெயில் காலத்தில் விசிறி, குடை தானம்; குளிர் காலத்தில் கம்பளிதானம்; பஞ்சகாலத்தில் அன்னதானம் என்றெல்லாம் சாஸ்திரங்களில் சிறப்பித்துச் சொல்லியிருக்கிற எல்லா தானங்களயும்விட, ‘வரதக்ஷிணை’ என்று அதிகாரப் பிச்சையாக தானம் வாங்குவதை நிறுத்துவதுதான் பெரிய தானம் என்று எனக்குத் தோன்றுகிறது. மற்றதெல்லாம் ஒரு பீரியடுக்கு [கால கட்டத்துக்கு] மட்டும்தான் பயனாவது. வரதக்ஷிணையோ இன்றைக்கு ஒருத்தனுடைய வாழ்நாள் முழுவதையும் (பெண்ணைப் பெற்றவனைத்தான் சொல்கிறேன்) பாதிப்பதோடு, எதிர்காலம் பூராவுக்கும் நம்முடைய சாஸ்திரீயமான வாழ்க்கை முறையையும், சாச்வதமான ஸ்த்ரீ தர்மத்தையும் பாதிப்பதாக இருக்கிறது. ஆனபடியால் வரதக்ஷிணை வாங்காமலிருப்பது நிரந்தர தர்மதானம் என்று சொல்லலாம். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்
Donation of palm leaf fans in summers, blankets in winter, and distributing food during drought are some of the charities eulogized in our ancient scriptures. But I feel that putting an end to the practice of dowry which is nothing but a kind of authoritative begging, matters more than all these charities. The latter serve their purpose only for a particular period. But dowry causes life time damage to the bride’s father and undermines our traditional way of life and womanhood.
