பழைய சாஸ்திரங்களில் ‘இஷ்டம்’, ‘பூர்த்தம்’, என்று ஜனங்கள் அநுஷ்டிக்க வேண்டிய இரண்டு விஷயங்களைச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறது. இவற்றில் ‘இஷ்டம்’ அல்லது ‘இஷ்டி’ என்பது யாக யஜ்ஞாதிகள். தசரதன் புத்ர காமேஷ்டி பண்ணினான் என்கிறோமே, அது புத்ர காம இஷ்டி தான் – அதாவது பிள்ளையை விரும்பிச் செய்த இஷ்டி (யாகம்).
‘பூர்த்தம்’ என்பது என்னவென்றால், அதுதான் தற்காலத்தில் ரொம்பப் பேர் நம் மதத்தில் இல்லாதது என்று நினைக்கிற ஸோஷல் ஸர்வீஸ். கிணறு-குளம் வெட்டுவது, ரோடு போடுவது, கோயில் கட்டுவது முதலிய ஸமூஹப் பணிகளுக்குப் ‘பூர்த்தம்’ என்று பேர். இஷ்டம் செய்யச் சில பேருக்குத்தான் அதிகாரம் உண்டு. அது ரொம்பக் கஷ்டம்கூட! நியமங்கள் ஜாஸ்தி. பூர்த்தம் இப்படியில்லை. பாமர ஜனங்களிலிருந்து ச்ரௌதிகள் வரையில் ஏழை-பணக்காரன், அந்த-ஜாதிக்காரன் இந்த ஜாதிக்காரன் என்கிற பேதம் கொஞ்சம்கூட இல்லாமல் ஸகல ஜனங்களும் ஒன்று சேர்ந்து பண்ண வேண்டியதே “பூர்த்தம்”. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்
Our Sastras prescribe two kinds of practices to be followed by the people. One is “Ishti” and the other is “Poorthi”. Ishtams or Ishtis refer to rituals like Yagams and Yagnams. We have read of King Dasaratha performing Puthrakameshti -it was Ishti or Yagna performed seeking a child or Puthra. “Poortham” refers to something that many people think is not present in our religion-social service, Activities like digging a well or a pond, constructing a road, or building a temple and similar socially oriented activities are grouped under Poortham. Only certain persons are entitled to perform Ishti and incidentally, it is quite difficult too, due to the various rules and regulations. But Poortham has no restrictions; it can be performed by anyone whether poor or rich, scholarly, or uneducated and belonging to any caste. “Poortham” brings everyone together. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal
