நல்ல சீலங்கள் உண்டாக வேண்டுமானால் துர்க்குணங்கள் நிவிருத்தியாக வேண்டும். துர்க்குணங்கள் நிவிருத்தியாக நல்ல கர்மாநுஷ்டானங்களைச் செய், பூஜை பண்ணு, (சகல ஜீவராசிகளுக்கும் ஆகாரம் கொடுப்பதான) வைஸ்வதேவம் பண்ணு, அதிதிகள் வந்தால் ஸத்காரம் (விருந்தோம்பல்) பண்ணு என்று பல விஷயங்களைச் செய்யச் சொல்கிறது சாஸ்திரம். இதன்படி செய்துவந்தால் கெட்ட காரியங்களுக்கு நேரமே இல்லாமல் போய்விடும். கர்மாநுஷ்டானங்களைப் பண்ணுகிறபோதும் ‘நாம் பண்ணுகிறோம்’ என்ற அகம்பாவத்தோடு பண்ணக்கூடாது. பண்ணக்கூடிய சக்தியை நமக்கு ஈஸ்வரன் கொடுத்தான், பண்ண வேண்டும் என்ற புத்தியைக் கொடுத்தான். அதற்கு வசதியும் கொடுத்தான் என்று நினைத்து, ஈஸ்வரார்ப்பணமாகப் பண்ணு என்று நமது வைதிக மதாசாரியர்கள் விதித்து வழிகாட்டினார்கள். துளி அகம்பாவம் வந்துவிட்டால் போச்சு! அது எத்தனையோ வேஷங்களைப் போட்டுக்கொண்டு, நாம் கொஞ்சம் அசந்து மறந்து இருந்தாலும் வந்து பிடித்துக்கொண்டு விடும். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்
To develop good character we should get rid off our bad traits. To get rid off bad traits we should do good rituals (karmanushtanams), puja, offering food to all living beings, feeding guests who come home, etc. This is what our Sastras say. If we do all these things there won’t be any time to think or do bad things. When we are conducting religious rites we must have no ego-feeling. The preceptors of the Vedic way have shown us the path to consecrate our karma to Eshwara. The Lord has given us strength to perform them but also the intelligence and the means. Even a little ego-sense would be ruinous because it is capable of taking many disguises and of sizing us at an unwary moment. – Pujya Sri Kanchi Maha Periyava.
