“நீ, எந்தக் கட்சி?..கூப்பிடுகிற கட்சியா? கூப்பிடாத கட்சியா?

1934 ஜூன் மாதம் ஐந்தாம் தேதி முதல் பதினெட்டாம் தேதிவரை,(காசியாத்திரை சமயத்தில்) நாகபுரியில் தங்கியிருந்தார்கள்,மகாப் பெரியவாள்.

என் தகப்பனாருக்கு, நாகபுரியில் போஸ்டல் ஆடிட் ஆபீசில் வேலை. அந்தக் காலத்து மனிதரல்லவா? தமிழ்நாட்டு அந்தண வகுப்புச் சம்பிரதாயப்படி சிகை,பஜனை,நாமசங்கீர்த்தனம்,உஞ்சவிருத்தி, ராதா கல்யாணம்- எல்லாம் முறைப்படி நடத்திக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

தரிசனத்துக்குச் சென்றார், அப்பா.

“திருச்சி – மண்ணச்சநல்லூர். பேர்,ராமனாதன்..” என்று தன்னை அறிமுகப்படுத்திக்கொண்டார்.

பெரியவா மந்தகாசத்துடன் என் தகப்பனாரைப் பார்த்தார்கள்.

“நீ, எந்தக் கட்சி?..கூப்பிடுகிற கட்சியா? கூப்பிடாத கட்சியா?…

அப்பாவுக்கு அதிர்ச்சி. தமிழ்நாட்டின் ஏதோ ஒரு கிராமத்தில் அந்தணர் தெருவில் நிலவிவரும் ஒரு நுட்பமான மரபு,பெரியவாளுக்கு எப்படித் தெரிந்தது. தெரிந்து நினைவு வைத்துக்கொண்டு, சரியான பேர்வழியிடத்தில் இக்கட்டான சூழ்நிலையில் போட்டு உடைக்கிறார்களே!..

மண்ணச்சநல்லூரில் ஸ்ரீராம மடம் என்று  அனைவருக்கும் பொதுவான ஒரு மடம் உண்டு. தினந்தோறும் பஜனை நாம சங்கீர்த்தனம் நடைபெறும். பஜனை என்றால்,பிரசாதம் முக்கியமாயிற்றே! தினமும் ஒவ்வோரு வீட்டார் மண்டகப்படி.

சிலர், தங்கள் மண்டகப்படி நாள்களில் – அதாவது தங்கள் வீட்டில் பிரசாதம் தயாரித்துக்கொண்டு வந்து விநியோகம் செய்யும் நாள்களில் – தெருவில் ஒவ்வொரு வீட்டுக்கும் சென்று, “இன்று எங்கள் மண்டகப்படி. நீங்கள் குடும்பத்துடன் வந்து பிரசாதம் பெற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்” என்று அழைப்பார்கள்.

இவர்கள், ‘கூப்பிடுகிற கட்சி!’

மற்றொரு சாரார், “இது என்ன, எங்கள் வீட்டுக் கல்யாணமா? தினம் தினம் பஜனை நடக்கிறது. ராம மடம்,பொதுச்சொத்து தாங்களாகவே வந்து பிரசாதம் பெற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டியது தானே? இதற்கு என்ன தனி அழைப்பு?” என்று யாரையும்
கூப்பிடமாட்டார்களாம்!

இவர்கள்,’கூப்பிடாத கட்சி!’

நாங்கள் கூப்பிடுகிற கட்சி தான். வீடு வீடாகச் சென்று, கூப்பிடுவோம்.

பெரியவாள் ஆசிர்வாதம் செய்து பிரசாதம் கொடுத்தார்களாம்.

(பல ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின்னர், என் தந்தை சொன்ன தகவல் இது.)

MahaPeriyava was staying in Nagapuri between 05/Jun/1934 and 18/Jun/1934 (during KashiYatrai)

My father was employed in the Nagapuri Post Audit office. He was a man of traditions – as per the customs of the Tamil Nadu Brahmin community, he sported a Shikhai, did Bhajans and was involved in organizing Namasankeerthanam, Unchavruththi, Radha Kalyanam as per customs.

My father went to take Darshan.

“Tiruchi, Mannachanallur. Name is Ramanathan”, said my father by way of introducing himself.
Periyava looked at my father with a smile playing on his lips.

“Which party do you belong to – the party which issues invitations or the party which does not issue invitations ?”
My father was totally surprised. This was a custom followed amongst the Brahmin community in a remote village in Tamil Nadu; how did Periyava come to know about it ?

Not only He knew about it, He brought it up at the most uncomfortable moment !

There was a Matam by name Sri Rama Matam which was common to everybody in Mannachanallur. Bhajanai and Namasankeerthanam used to take place there daily. If there is Bhajanai, can Prasadam be far behind ?? People from all houses used to take turns at preparing Prasadam.

Whenever it was their turn, people in some houses used to go to every house and personally invite people in that house, “Today, it is our turn to prepare Prasadam. Please come along with your family and accept the Prasadam”

These people belonged to the party which issues invitations !

The other group felt, “Is this a wedding for which we are inviting people ? Bhajanais happen daily. And the Rama Matam is a common place. People can come and get the Prasadam. Why is a separate invitation needed for this ? ”

These people belonged to the parth which does not issue invitations !

We belonged to the party which did issue invitations. We used to go house to house and invite people.
Periyava blessed him and gave the Prasadam
