காதம் என்றால் வெட்டுவது; அதாவது குளமோ, கிணறோ, வாய்க்காலோ வெட்டி உபகாரம் பண்ணுவது. சாஸ்திரங்களில் விசேஷித்துச் சொல்லியிருக்கிற இந்தப் பூர்த்த தர்மத்தை மறந்தால்தான் ஜலக்கஷ்டம் (Water scarcity) என்று ஓயாமல் அவஸ்தைப் படுகிறோம். அந்தக் காலத்தில் இந்தக் கார்யம் ரொம்பவும் முக்யமாகக் கருதப்பட்டதால்தான் நாம் கூப்பிட்டு ஒருத்தன் வரவில்லை என்றால், “அவன் அங்கே என்ன வெட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறானோ?” என்று கேட்கிற வழக்கம் வந்திருக்கிறது. அதாவது அவன் வெட்டிக் கொண்டிருந்தால் மட்டும் நாம் எத்தனை அவஸரத்தில் கூப்பிட்டாலும் வராமலிருக்கலாம் என்று அர்த்தமாகிறது! இப்போது வெட்டுகிற கார்யம் போய், தூர்ப்பது தான் முக்யமான கார்யமாக இருக்கிறது! குழாயில் தண்ணீர் நின்றுவிட்டாலோ அல்லது பூச்சியும் புழுவுமாகக் குழாய் ஜலம் வரும்போதோ, “ஏண்டா குளத்தைத் தூர்த்தோம், கிணற்றை மூடினோம்?” என்று துக்கமாக வருகிறது. முன்பெல்லாம் ஒரு குளம் என்றால் வாய்க்கால்கள், வடிகால்கள் என்றெல்லாம் போட்டு வெகு சுத்தமாக வைத்துக் கொள்வார்கள். கிணறு என்றால் இழுக்கத் தெரிந்த மநுஷ்யனுக்கு மட்டும்தான் அது ப்ரயோஜனமாகும். குளமானாலோ வாயில்லா ப்ராணிகளுக்கும்–காக்காய், குருவி முதற்கொண்டு ஸகல ஜீவராசிகளுக்கும்–அது பயன்படும். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்
Kaadham means digging. It is because we have forgotten this Dharma of digging ponds and canals, enjoined upon us by our shaastraas that we are facing water scarcity today. It was considered a very important task in the olden days. That is the reason, when somebody does not turn up when we call them, an idiomatic question-“Is he busy digging” –has evolved in the Tamil language. It signifies that if he is digging, the task is so important, he can ignore any urgent invitation of ours. Nowadays, we are more interested in filling up rather than digging ponds.When taps dry up or the water comes with worms and insects, we regret having filled up those ponds and wells. In those days ponds used to be kept very clean with proper canals and drainages.
