வெற்றிலை என்று ஏன் பெயர் வந்தது?
தாவரவியல் மாணவனுக்கு விளக்கம்

ஒரு சமயம் காஞ்சி மடத்தில் மகா ஸ்வாமிகளைச் சந்திக்க ஒரு மாணவன் வந்திருந்தான். அவனிடம் ஸ்வாமிகள்,””என்ன படிக்கிறாய்?” என்று கேட்டார். மாணவன் தாவரவியல் படிப்பதாகக் கூறினான்.
ஸ்வாமிகள் தன் முன் வைத்திருந்த பழம், பாக்கு, வெற்றிலைத் தட்டில் இருந்த வெற்றிலையைக் காட்டி, “இதன் பெயர் என்ன?” என்று கேட்டார். மாணவனும் “வெற்றிலை’ என்றான்.
“அதற்கு ஏன் வெற்றிலை என்று பெயர் வந்தது?” என்று கேட்டார். மாணவன் திகைத்தான், மற்றவர்களும் விழித்தார்கள்.
மகா ஸ்வாமிகள் கூறினார், “எல்லாக் கொடிகளும் பூ விடும், காய் காய்க்கும், ஆனால் வெற்றிலைக் கொடி பூக்காது, காய்க்காது, உட்கொள்ளக்கூடிய வெறும் இலை மட்டும்தான் விடும். அதனால் அது வெற்று இலை ஆயிற்று” என்று கூறினார்.

Once a student visited Kaanchipuram to meet Mahaperiyava. Swamigal asked him – What are you studying? The student replied – I am pursuing a degree in Botany.
Swamigal looked at the fruits, betel nuts and betel leaves placed in front of him in a tray. He pointed to the betel leaves and asked the student to name it. The student replied in Tamil as Vettrilai.
Periyava asked the student, how did this leaf get its name as Vettrilai? The student was puzzled and so were the devotees around.
Mahaswamigal told – all the climbers (a kind of plant) produce flowers or vegetables. Though the betel vine doesn’t produce flowers or vegetables, it produces leaves that can be eaten as it is. This is the reason it is called Vettru-Ilai.
