ஆகையால் தீபாவளிக்கு கங்கையோடு காவேரி ஸம்பந்தமும் இருக்கிறது. அன்றைக்கு ஒரு நாள் மட்டும் எல்லா வெந்நீரிலும் அருணோதயதிலிருந்து ஸுர்யோதயம் வரை ஒரு முஹூர்த்தம் – அதாவது இரண்டு நாழிகை – கங்கை இருக்கிறாளென்றால், துலா மாஸம் முழுக்கவே அருணோதயத்தில் ஆரம்பித்து ப்ராதக்காலம் முடிகிறவரை, அதாவது ஸுர்யன் உதித்து ஆறு நாழிகை வரை காவேரியில் கங்கை உள்பட ஸகல தீர்த்தங்களும் இருக்கின்றன.
அதனால் தீபாவளியன்று முதலில் நாம் அருணோதயத்தில் எண்ணெய் தேய்த்துக் கொண்டு கங்கா ஸ்மரணத்தோடு வெந்நீர் ஸ்நானம் பண்ண வேண்டும். அப்புறம் ஸுர்யோதயமானபின், ஆனால் ஆறு நாழிகைக்குள் (2 hrs 24 mins), பச்சை ஜலத்தில் இன்னொரு ஸ்நானம் செய்ய வேண்டும். இந்த ஸ்நானத்தின் போது துலா காவேரியை ஸ்மரித்துக்கொண்டு பண்ணவேண்டும். முதல் ஸ்நானத்தில் நரகாஸுரன், பூமாதேவி, ஸத்யபாமா, கிருஷ்ணர் எல்லார் நினைவும் வரும். இரண்டாம் ஸ்நானத்தில் பரமேஸ்வரன் நினைவும் வந்துவிடும்.
இந்தப் புண்ய ஸ்மரணம்தான் பெரிய ஸ்நானம். உன் அழுக்கையெல்லாம் அகற்றி ஜீவனைக் குளிப்பாட்டிப் பரிசுத்தி பண்ணுவது அதுதான். ‘கோவிந்தேதி ஸதா ஸ்நானம்’ என்பதுண்டு. இப்படிச் சொன்னதால் வெளியே இருக்கிற கங்கா, காவேரியெல்லாம் அவசியமில்லை, பிரயோஜனமில்லை என்று அர்த்தம் பண்ணிக்கொண்டு விடக்கூடாது.
அந்த கோவிந்தனேதான் நம்மிடம் கருணையோடு நமக்கு கங்கா ஸ்நானத்தைக் கொடுத்து, தானே காவேரி ஸ்நானம் பண்ணிக் காட்டியிருக்கிறான். அவனுடைய ஸ்மரணத்தோடு இப்படி ஸ்நானம் பண்ணினால் அது உள்ளத்துக்கு ஸ்நானம் என்பது மட்டுமில்லை, உள்ளத்துக்குப் புது வஸ்திர அலங்காரம், மதுரமான பக்ஷணம் எல்லாமும் அதுவேதான்!
தீபாவளியன்று யமனுக்குத் தர்ப்பணம் பண்ண வேண்டுமென்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறது. வட தேசத்தில் தீபாவளிக்கு முதல் நாள் ‘யம தீபம்’ என்றே போடுகிறார்கள். (This has been taken from one of the previous chapters – Bhagavad Gita Is Deepavali’s Younger Brother).
இது துலா மாஸம். (அதாவது நம் ஐப்பசி)*. இந்த மாஸம் பூராவும் புரதி தினமும் அருணோதயத்திலிருந்து உதயாதி ஆறு நாழிகை (2 மணி 24 நிமிஷம்) வரை அறுபத்தாறு கோடி புண்ய தீர்த்தங்களும் காவேரியில் வாஸம் செய்கின்றன. Why Ganga Snanam – அன்றைக்கு அந்த வேளையில் தேய்த்துக் கொள்கிற எண்ணையில் லக்ஷ்மியும், குளிக்கிற வெந்நீரில் கங்கையும் வஸிக்கும்படி செய்துவிட்டால் யாரும் பயப்பட மாட்டார்கள்; லக்ஷ்மியும் கங்கையும் வேண்டாம் என்று எவருமே நினைக்க மாட்டார்கள். இதனால் ஸகல ஜனங்களுக்கும், பண்டிகை என்ற ஸந்தோஷத்துடன் புண்ணியம் என்பதும் கிடைக்கும்’ என்று நினைத்தாள். இதனால்தான் அந்த ஸ்நானத்துக்கு கங்கா ஸ்நானம் என்றே பேர் ஏற்பட்டது. அகத்தில் கிணற்றடியில், பாத்ரூமில் மொண்டு விட்டுக் கொண்டு ஸ்நானம் பண்ணுகிறவர்களும் கிழக்குப் பார்க்கவே பண்ண வேண்டும். பொதுவாக எந்தக் கர்மாவுக்குமே எடுத்தது கிழக்கு. (Snanam in Vol 3)

Deepavali not only has relationship with Ganga Matha but also Kaveri Matha. Only on that day Ganga Matha resides in all the hot water starting from Arunodhayam to Sunrise, for a Muhurtham or Two Nazhigai’s (48 minutes).In the Thula (Aipassi) month, starting from Arunodhayam all the way till Praadha Kaalam, Kaveri Matha has all holy rivers including Ganga Matha for 6 Nazhigai time (2 hrs and 24 minutes). In one of the previous chapters Sri Periyava has said doing Kaveri Snanam in this month during this time contains 66 Crore (billion) Punniya Theerthas.
On Deepavali, first we have to apply oil (Sesame) on our head during Arunodhayam (Pre Sunrise) and then take bath in hot water thinking about Ganga Matha.
After sunrise, but before 6 Nazhigai’s (2 hrs 24 mins) we need to take bath in cold water thinking about Thula Kaveri Matha. In the first snanam we need to think about Naragasuran, Bhooma Devi, Sathya Bama, Krishna. In the second bath we need to have the Smaranai about Lord Parameswara.
This Punniya Smaranam is the Big Snanam. It removes all our dirts and cleanses the Jeeva. There is a saying called ‘Govindedhi Sadha Snanam’. Because I say this, it should not be construed that Ganga and Kaveri Snanam’s are unimportant and not to be done. Govinda with this abundant grace has given us the Ganga Snanam and also showed us Kaveri Snanam by doing it himself. If we take bath in his Smaranam it is not only a Snanam for our mind, it acts as a new dress and delicious sweets for our mind.
It is said, we need to do Tharpanam to Yama Dharma Raja on this day. In North India, they light a deepa called ‘Yama Deepa’. – This has been taken from Geethai-Deevali’s Younger Brother Chapter in Deivathin Kural Vol 7.
No one will fear if they understand Lakshmi Devi resides in the oil (Sesame) and Ganga Matha resides in the hot water during that time. We don’t file people who do not want Lakshmi Devi or Ganga Matha. As as resulg all of the people enjoy the festival and aslo get Punniya. That is the reason, this Snanam is called ‘Ganga Snanam’.
Periyava says in Vol 3 Snanam should be done facing east direction when taking bath in bathroom.
