கஷ்டம் தீர்த்த கருணாமூர்த்தி

I obtained permission from Shri Bharani Mani in reproducing the content from his book “பெரியவா எனக்கு மட்டும்தான்” – so generous of Him. As with true Periyava devotee, he said “purpose is to reach all devotees” – this is the classic statement you would hear from true devotees. வளவனூர் ஒரு பெரிய கிராமம். டவுன்ஷிப் என்று கூட கூறலாம். விழுப்புரத்திலிருந்து அரு கள் தொலைவில் புதுச்சேரி மார்க்கத்தில் உள்ளது. நான்கு வீதிகள் கொண்ட அக்ரஹாரம். மேற்கே பெருமாள் கோவில், கிழக்கே சிவன் கோவில், தெற்கு எல்லையிலே அம்மன் கோவில். வடப்புறத்திலே  குமார குப்பம் என்னும் ஸ்ரீ முருகன் கோவில். கட்டுகோப்பான இடம், ஜனங்கள், விழாக் காலங்களில் அனைவருக்கும் கோவில் சாப்பாடுதான். ஆடிப் பூரம், தைப்பூசம், சிவராத்திரி, நவராத்திரி என்று ஆன்மிகம் தழைத்து வந்த இடம். பின்னே இருக்கிறதா? நம் பெரியவா அவதரித்த இடத்துக்கு வெகு அருகாமையில் உள்ளதாயிற்றே!

1948ஆம் வருடம் பெரியவா கிட்டத்தட்ட ஒரு மாசம் கேம்ப். வட அக்ரஹாரத்தில் பூஜை. தினமும் பெண்ணை ஆற்றில் குளியல். ஏறி வழியாக மேனாவில் பயணம். ஊரே கோலாகலமாக இருந்தது. கிழக்கு அக்ரஹாரத்தில் உள்ள K.V.K சாஸ்திரி, மடத்து முத்ராதிகாரிகள் உண்டு. ஸ்ரீ மட நிர்வாஹம், நல்ல கார்யங்கள் மக்களுக்கு போய் சேர வேண்டும் என்று ஏற்பாடு. ஏகாதசி புராணம் வாசிப்பது, சிறுசிறு உபன்யாசம் நடத்துவது, வேதங்களுக்கு முக்யத்துவம் கொடுப்பது, இவையெல்லாம் பெரியவா ஏற்பாடு. அப்போதெல்லாம் மடத்துக்கு வருமானமே போறாது. ‘எனக்கு பாத்து வயசு இருக்கும், எனது தம்பிக்கு எட்டு வயசு. அம்மா தனியாக கஷ்ட ஜீவனந்தாம். ஆனால் ரொம்ப கண்டிப்பு, பெரியவா வந்ததினாலே தினமும் பூஜைக்கு தும்பப்பூ பறித்து காலையிலேயே கொண்டு போய் கொடுப்போம்’. ஒருநாள் பெரியவா எங்கள் இருவரையும் அழைத்தார். ‘பசங்களா, நாளை வரும் போது எனக்காக இருவரும் மொட்டை போட்டுண்டு பூ எடுத்து வரணும்’ சொன்னா, நான் சும்மா இல்லாம, ‘எங்க அம்மா சொன்னதைத்தான் செய்வோம்’ என்று கூற, ‘மாதுஸ்ரீ ஒன்னும் சொல்லமாட்டார்’ என்று கூறினார்.

வீடு திரும்பி அம்மாவுக்கு நடந்ததை தெரியப்படுத்தினேன். உடனே மொட்டை போட்டு ஏற்பாடு ஆகியது. மறுநாள் பூவுடன் பெரியவா முன்னால் நின்றோம்.

‘பலே பலே இப்பத்தான சமத்து பசங்க. இன்னியோட உங்கள் கஷ்டம் எல்லாம் போச்சு. கண்ணப்பா பசங்கன்ன சும்மாவா?’ மேலும் பெரியவா தொடர்ந்தார்.

‘உங்கப்பாவும் நானும் ஒரே ஸ்கூலிலே படித்தோம். ஒரு சமயம் மாந்தோப்பிலே மரத்தில் ஏறி மாங்காய் பறிக்கும்படி கூற அவனும் மரத்தில் ஏறி மாங்கா பரிக்கலானன். நான் விளையாட்டாக, தோட்டக்காரன் வராண்டா என்று கூற, மேல் கிளையிலிருந்து கீழே குதித்து ஓட்டம் எடுத்தோம். அவன் விதி அப்படியாயிற்று, ஏன் விதி இப்படியாயிற்று’ என்றார். அன்றைய தினத்திலிருந்து எங்கள் குடும்ப கஷ்டம் சிறிது சிறிதாக குறைந்தது.

பெரியவா எனக்கு மட்டும்தான்!

The village of Vallavanoor is a stone throw away from the township of Vizhupuram en route to Pudhucheri. It is a big town with four agraharams alone. The Perumal temple is located at the west, the Sivan temple at the east, the Amman temple at the south and at the north is Lord  Murugan, called Kumara Kuppam. Buzzing with activity, festival days meant the temple fed everybody. Days like Aadi Pooram, Shivarathri, Navarathri, and Thai Poosam were observed with special fervor.

In 1948, Periyava camped here for almost a month. Puja was held at the North Agraharam. He used to bathe at the Pennai river and then travel along the riverside in his palanquin. The entire village bore a festive look. In the East Agraharam, there was the house of one K V Sastry. He was one of the seal bearers of the Sri Matam. Following Periyava instructions, reading discourses on Ekadasi, holding upanyasanams used to be conducted regularly. At that time there wasn’t much income from the Matam.  Bharani mama recalls “I was about 10 years old and my brother around 8. My mother used to run the house single handedly. Those were hard times. However she was still very strict about our up-bringing. Since Periyava was in town every day, we had to collect Thumba flowers for his pujai. One day while doing so, Periyava beckoned us closer. He said “Children, when you both come tomorrow, tonsure your heads and come …do this for me”. However, I, not the one to be quiet, immediately said “We will do so only if our mother gives us permission. Otherwise she will scold us”. Periyava said

“ Amma will not say anything. Tell her that I said so”.

On reaching home, we told our mother of Periyavas’ instructions and accordingly it was arranged. The next day we went with our tonsured heads and stood before Periyaval for his Darshan. He said “Very good! Very good! Now only you are obedient children. Henceforth all your troubles are over! Periyava continued …

Your father Kannapa and I were schoolmates. Once we wanted to pluck some mangoes from a mango tree in a grove and he started to climb a tree. Just to tease him, I shouted that the garden keeper was coming. He immediately jumped from the tree and we both ran as fast as we could. His destiny took him elsewhere and mine here.

Since then, the troubles in our family slowly started disappearing!!
