Acharya’s Praise

Acharya has written an explanatory work for Gowdapada’s ‘Maandukya Karika’ [माण्डूक्य कारिका].  While concluding it, he praises Gowdapada with the words ‘the person who has, out of utmost compassion, given the nectar of knowledge to the human species which is wallowing in mundane worldly existence – the nectar [अमृतम्] which is not available to even the Deva community which got the name as immortals [अमराः] because it [the amrutam] was consumed by them,  He celebrates Gowdapada – his Paramaguru [Guru’s Guru] – as the most venerable among venerables [महापूज्यः] and says  “I fall at his feet and offer my obeisance”.

In this ocean of worldly life [संसार सागर], people are suffering since they are in the clutches of the crocodile called ‘birth and death’.  As per the statement of Acharya, at such a time, what does Gowdapada do, bound by compassion?  Acharya praises him* saying “there is another ocean called Vedas.  It is the ocean of milk.  He is taking out the nectar of Advaita from that ocean by churning it, using his Superior knowledge [ज्ञानम्] as the Mandara Mountain [मन्दार पर्वत]. He offers it to the people and relieves them from the [cycle of] birth and death”!

“paada-paata” [पाद-पात] means ‘falling at the feet’.  Acharya is offering his obeisance to his Parama Guru with so much respect.

The one at whose feet he is falling is Gowdapada.  It is customary to add ‘paada’ [पाद] to the names of great people. ‘Adigal’ [அடிகள்] also has the same meaning.  Persons at whose feet we have to fall – who will ensure that we reach the feet of Bhagavan – are called ‘paada’.

Here, the one who is falling at the feet of Gowdapada is Bhagavatpada [भगवद्पाद]!  (That is), the one who is himself the personification of the lotus feet of Eswara, to whom we have to ultimately surrender.

‘Bhagavatpada’ is added only for Acharya and his direct Guru as, Sri Sankara Bhagavatpada [श्री शङकरभगवद्पाद] and Sri Govinda Bhagavatpada [श्री गोविन्दभगवद्पाद].  Others are referred to (without adding Bhagavat) adding only ‘paada’.

When a book is written, it is customary to indicate at the end of the book, even at the end of each chapter, ‘this chapter’ or ‘this book is written by so and so, disciple of so and so’.  This [reference] is called, ‘Pushpika’ [पुष्पिका]. ‘Colophon’ [in English].  There has been a tradition for a long time that in the case of the works of Acharya, instead of mentioning him as ‘Bhagavatpada’, he is referred to as ‘Bhagavan’ himself, as ‘Sankara Bhagavata:’[शङकर भगवतः] and only his guru is referred to as ‘Bhagavatpada [भगवद्पाद]– Bhagavat Pujya Pada’[भगवत् पूज्य पाद], – “iti sri govinda bhagavat pujyapaada sishyasya sri sankara bhagavata: krutou” [इति श्री गोविन्द भगवत् पूज्यपाद शिष्यस्य श्री शङकर भगवतः कृतौ].

We concluded the story of Gowdapada, saying that he sat in deep meditation on Atma, at Badrikashrama.

What happened to Chandrasharma who was at the banks of the Narmada river?  When did he become, Govinda Bhagavat Pada?
