இதுவே மநுஷ்ய குணங்களில் முதலாவதாகச் சொல்லப்படுகிற நன்றி;

இதே பூஜை;

The Two Kings

Maha Vishnu offered Meenakshi’s hand into that of Sundareshwarar in a gesture to solemnize their wedding.  In Madurai, this event is beautifully sculpted.  Goddess as sister of Padmanabha and Sakthi of Parameswara looks very lively in the sculpture.  As we keep beholding this, the difference in Saiva and Vaishnava will be totally erased from our mind.

Brahmam contains all the energy (Sakthi).  This energy is the driving force behind all activities in the universe.  Brahmam is Parameswara.  Ambal is the energy.  With this energy the world is being taken care and protected by Maha Vishnu. Though we split into three, they are ultimately One. Brahmam, its energy and the action performed through that energy cannot be different.  Appaiya Deekshitar has established that out of various Gods, these three are always in the state of Supreme Being (Paramatma) and addressed them as three gems (Rathna Trayam).

The classification that Siva is the peaceful form of Brahmam and Vishnu the active form is perhaps not entirely correct.  The two Rajas (kings) make us realize this.  One is Rangaraja and the other is Nataraja. If Vaishnavites use the term ‘temple’ without any prefix or suffix it means Srirangam.  Similarly for Saivaites it is Chidambaram.  The main deities in these two great holy places namely Rangaraja and Nataraja are facing south. This has a special significance.  South is the direction of Yama, the God of death.  Both the deities face Yama because they redeem us from the fear of death and grant us eternality.

Rangam (Arangam) and Sabha have the same meaning. It means stage.  The sanctum sanctorum of Nataraja in Chidambaram is called Sabha. It is apt to perform a dance in the stage. But out of the two only one is dancing. Siva, the one who is supposed to be peaceful is dancing delightfully. Whereas Vishnu, the protector of the world, is sleeping in Srirangam.  What a topsy-turvy!  What do we learn by this?  We have done the classification based on their deeds as threefold and five-fold and named a God for each.  In reality it is Parasakthi’s various forms so as to make it comprehensible for our simple mind. We should not presume all the deities to be totally different entities.  Both the Rajas are driving this point home. They are acting as if they have inter changed their actions!  The recluse is fantastically dancing and the one in command of taking care of the people is peacefully sleeping!

One more deity facing the south direction is Dakshinamurthy.  He is an embodiment of wisdom. He is the Visible form of the one and only Supreme (Brahmam) who is devoid of any action.  His ‘chith’ or wisdom is in the form of Ambal.  That Chaithanya (universal consciousness – derived from root chith) has taken the forms of  the trinity, thirty three crore  demi gods, grass, root, birds, and animals including humans. In India, especially where both Siva and Vishnu are predominantly being worshiped, we must not differentiate between the two. We must engrave in our heart the following:

Vishnu is another form of Parasakthi.  Siva is the inseparable base of Parasakthi.

If we have Bakthi towards that Sakthi, the inherent propelling energy inside every one, She will protect us as a mother by feeding us with the milk of wisdom.

We would be like a corpse without her grace. All our thoughts and actions are due to the energy she gives. It is incorrect to take pride in any of our actions as if it is our doing.  We should meditate at least for a few minutes every day on Parasakthi who is the force behind all our actions. We should offer our prayer thus, “My energy is just a drop received from you. Guide me.”

This is to express gratitude, the primary quality one should possess.

This is worship.

This is the holy bath – which wipes the dirt namely ego and cleanses our life.
