ஸ்ரீசங்கரரின் கால நிர்ணயம்

எது எந்த சங்கரர் செய்தது?

ஆசார்யாள் ஸ்தாபித்த மடங்களிலெல்லாம் சங்கராசாரியார், சங்கராசாரியார் என்றே எத்தனையோ ஸ்வாமிகள் வந்தாயிற்று. இவர்களில் தங்கள் ஸந்நியாஸ நாமாவிலேயும் ‘சங்கரர்’ என்று இருப்பவர்களாகவே ‘க்ருபா சங்கரர்’, ‘உஜ்-ஜ்வல சங்கரர்’, ‘மூக சங்கரர்’, ‘அபிநவ சங்கரர்’ என்றெல்லாம் இருந்திருக்கிறார்கள். ச்ருங்கேரியில் ‘வித்யா சங்கரர்’ என்று விசேஷ மரியாதையோடு ஒரு ஸ்வாமிகளைச் சொல்கிறார்கள். இவர்களிலும் ஸ்தோத்ரங்கள் செய்தவர்கள் இருந்திருக்கலாம். அப்படிப்பட்ட ஸ்தோத்ரங்கள் ஆதி சங்கரர் செய்ததாகவே நாளாவட்டத்தில் நம்பிக்கை ஏற்பட்டிருக்கக் கூடியது ஸஹஜமே! “ஸுத த்ரோஹி”யைச் சொல்லும் “சிவ புஜங்க” ஸ்தோத்ரமும் அப்படி ஒன்றாக இருக்கக்கூடும். ஆகையால் இந்த ஒரு ரெஃபரன்ஸைக் கொண்டு மட்டும் கால நிர்ணயம் செய்வது ஸரியாகாது.

Determining the period of Sri Sankara’s life – Which of them is composed by which Sankara?

In all the Matams established by Acharya, many Swamijis with the suffix Sankaracharya have already been there. Amongst them, there have been Swamijis who have had the word “Sankara” in their Sanyasa name also, like ‘Kripa Sankara’, ‘Ujjwala Sankara’, ‘Mooka Sankara’, ‘Abhinava Sankara’, etc.  People talk with very great reverence about one ‘Vidya Sankara’ Swami in Sringeri.  It is possible that a few among them [the above mentioned Swamijis] could have composed Stotras (स्तोत्राः).  Over a period of time, people probably started believing that these Stotras were also written by Adi Sankara, and this is something normal! It is possible that the Stotra “Siva Bhujanga”, which talks about “Suta Drohi” [सुत द्रोहि] could have been one such.  Therefore, it would not be proper to determine the life period [of Sri Adi Sankara] taking into account only this one reference.
