MUST READ – Sage of Kanchi – Sri Periyava Kainkaryams in Full Swing

When a person is in difficulties, we should not probe into his caste or religion or bother whether he is good or bad. Whoever he may be, however he may be, we should help him in whatever possible way and mitigate his suffering. Especially when talking about Annadhanam (donating food), the holy scripture Thirumandhiram specifically advises us to give to everybody, without going into their merits or demerits. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal

Jaya Jaya Shankara Hara Hara Shankara,

Suffering is all around us. Aged, destitute people confined to orphanages or old-age homes, homeless people living on the streets and slums, physically/mentally challenged children deprived of a normal life, paraplegics pitifully struggling to move around, are all very common sights. Some people suffer in silence, but others are pushed so hard by their circumstances that they sacrifice their dignity and ask, many times even beg, for help.

One of the greatest gifts of being human, is the ability to empathize and to use it to ease or eliminate suffering around us. Compassion serves great purposes – to look beyond one’s circumstances and offer help, to speak kind words and give hope, to ease our own suffering in light of another person’s circumstances, to purify our mind, attain inner peace and so on.

In periyavA’s words –

When “theettu” (aashoucham/uncleanness due to death etc.) happens upon us, do we not isolate ourselves from this world? The same way, treating each day spent without helping the world around us as “theettu”, each of us should engage in service, to whatever extent we can.

Inspired by these teachings of periyavA, we took our first step towards Manava Seva initiatives in Oct 2017 by performing Anna dhanam to slum dwellers. It was an eye-opening experience for us and it motivated us to continue looking out for more and more opportunities to help people in need.

Since then, by PeriyavA’s anugraham, we have executed a variety of Manava seva Kainkaryams impacting many people’s lives. We have realized, again and again, that many people are simply lost in their ocean of despair and are merely looking for something to hold on to, and often times, small steps we take can impact them in uplifting ways.

Our Manava Seva Kainkaryams broadly fall into the below categories –

Food Donation

– Anna dhanam

– Grocery pack donations

Medical Help

– Surgery expenses

– Eye treatment expenses

– Medical camps

– Eye camps

Donation of Assistive Devices

When Covid lock downs started, suffering intensified for many poor people in the vicinity of our Kainkaryam locations, and our Anna Dhana Kainkaryams gained priority and momentum. By periyavA’s abundant grace and support from our Kainkaryam members, we have been able to sustain an Anna Dhana MahA Yajnam since Apr 2020 until now. We are currently feeding around 30 poor, old, homeless, physically challenged people daily.

It has indeed been a very fulfilling and humbling experience, to play our small part in easing the day-to-day difficulties of underprivileged people around us.

Backed by periyavA’s blessings and supported by our Kainkaryam members, we continue to seek opportunities to help and be of use.

Thiruvalluvar says –

Compassion sustains this world. Those without it are, but a burden on earth.
