MUST READ: From the Jaws of Death and Periyava’s Miraculous Royal Rescue of a Rishabam

I’ll quote an example which stands as a proof to show how people in olden days showered affection on the cows and protected them. It’s been mentioned that there are thirty two Dharmas which all beings born as humans ought to perform. Sometimes these thirty two are doubled and considered as sixty four. One among them has been mentioned as “Aatheendu Kutri Nirivudhal”. What is it? Imagine a cow has an itching in some part of its body. When we have an itching somewhere in our body, we can bend and use our hands to scratch that part and get relieved of itching. But the cow can scratch itself only by its hind legs. When there is an itching in some part of the body which cannot be accessed by its rear legs, it wouldn’t be able to scratch itself. It is to install stones at various places in order to help the cow in such circumstances is what is called ‘Aatheendu Kutri Niruvudhal’, which the cow could rub its body against and get relief from itching. Such stones were installed for this purpose those days. The cows which were going that way scratched themselves on the stones and got relieved of their itching. Like this in a country which considered even small deeds as these as a great Dharma and performed them for the sake of the cows, we are letting the cows starve and go malnourished and are sending them to slaughter houses and what a huge disgrace it is on our part! – Jagadguru Chandrasekharendra Saraswathy Swamigal

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – First and foremost many thanks to Shri Jayaram Thiagarajan to help me write this article. We have a small WhatsApp/Telegram group where we do Periyava Kainkrayams which Jayaram is part of and aware of this incident but I could not post everything in details as it dragged for days and there were too many twists in this take. Since I’m swamped with so many things, I detailed out this incident to him completely and he helped pen it to perfection.  Thank you Jayaram.

Before you proceed. please read the below newspaper articles below in English and Tamizh so you get the background and context.

https://www.dtnext.in/News/TamilNadu/2021/01/11182005/1270914/Farmer-in-Tiruchi-attacks-bull-for-grazing-in-his-.vpf

https://tamil.oneindia.com/news/thanjavur/tanjore-bull-attacked-by-farm-land-owner-a-man-filed-police-complaint/articlecontent-pf514596-408676.html

This incident started on Jan 11th. Anand, a farmer in a village near Thanjavur had two rishabams that he used for farming. One of these rishabams, due to being pestered by mosquitoes at night, wandered away into the neighboring field to graze. The owner of that field attacked the rishabam using a machette (அறிவாள்), severely wounding it on its leg and incapacitating it.

This appeared on the news on Jan 12th and we shared it in our group. As soon as we started discussing in our group, people from our Kainkaryam family started reaching out to find contact information of the owner. ShrI G V Iyer emailed the news office and found the phone number of the local police station at Nadukaveri and talked to them. The policeman said he would get us the phone number of the owner the next day. But that did not happen and it dragged on for another day and a half as we could not reach him. Finally, by periyavA’s grace, we were able to contact him and get farmer Anand’s phone number.

Our Kainkaryam members shrI Vishvanathan, shrI Sharada Iyer, shrI G V Iyer and shrI Ramaswamy repeatedly tried to contact him and eventually I was able to talk to his uncle who said there was nothing to worry and the problem was solved as they had reached a compromise. Then I talked to Anand who explained everything and said he sold the rishabam to a slaughterhouse for Rs. 35,000.

This is the shocking reality of injured cows – all their hard work and sacrifice is instantly forgotten.

I explained to him that it may seem like a compromise from his end, but what about from the rishabam’s end? It is unfair and unethical to do so as it has worked hard for him for 2 years, was very well behaved and gentle all the time, and has no idea of human boundaries or land ownership and was viciously attacked for innocently wandering into a field.

Anand agreed it was wrong and asked me what he can do at this point. I asked him to get us the phone number of the guy he sold it to. He said he will, but didn’t call back. In the meantime, we found out he had sold it to the slaughterhouse through a broker.

Another thing we found out was that farmer Anand had filed an FIR in the Nadukaveri police station accusing his neighbor, as soon as he found out his rishabam was attacked by him. The police station wasn’t even aware that the rishabam had been sold, while the FIR was still active and waiting to be investigated. We started looking for the rishabam the next day.

We were talking back and forth with farmer Anand, the broker and the slaughterhouse guy. The broker told us he had already sold the cow to the butcher and promised Anand Rs. 23,000 and paid Rs. 1,000 advance and that the rest will be delivered after the meat is sold (this is how this business usually happens). This contradicted the Rs. 35,000 price that farmer Anand told us. As you can see, it is all a money game at this point.

ShrI Ramaswamy contacted the Nadukaveri police station and coaxed a constable to talk to the broker about our group buying the rishabam back. The constable talked to him and he agreed.

But in the meantime, the sub inspector (SI) of the station got directly involved as the FIR was active and didn’t want the constable to be brokering deals. At this point, I asked shrI Vishvanathan to take a lead on this. He agreed and reached out to the SI and thanked him for getting involved as that had helped us by delaying the cruel fate of the rishabam. We requested him to quickly release the suffering rishabam and let us buy it and take it to a goshAlAs so that we can feed it and start treatment immediately. We offered to take care of expense and compensate everyone for the trouble.

He agreed, but it dragged on and on. He promised to release it by 10 am the next day, but delayed it saying he was tied up in drinking cases as it was Mattu Pongal, followed by some suicide case which was his priority. He said he will do it the following day. But that day was Kaanum Pongal and a Saturday. Saturdays are horrible days for cows at slaughterhouses.

We wanted to avoid our rishabam even getting terrified by seeing other cows brutally butchered in front of it, and so we insisted that it had to be as early as possible that day. Finally we managed to get our rishabam moved outside the slaughter house that day.

In the meantime, periyavA seems to have had His own plan for saving our rishabam. Another animal rescue NGO group, having seen this news article, separately filed some cases and escalated this all the way to the district collector. They showed him the newspaper clipping and he issued an order that the rishabam first needs a health checkup. A team of doctors examined our rishabam and certified that it was no longer fit for agricultural work and recommended that it be taken to a goshAlA to live the rest of its life in peace.

Based on this, the next day the collector issued an order that our rishabam should be released from the slaughterhouse and transported to Jayam goshAlA Mayiladuthurai. This is the same goshAlA where we were intending to take the rishabam. The collector’s order overruled the SI’s efforts. So, without any other option, the SI came to the slaughterhouse and ordered it to be released.

By periyavA’s grace, our rishabam was gently lifted using hydraulic equipment and placed in the police ambulance. Even if the rishabam was released to us, we would not have been able to lift it so gently, as we don’t have such sophisticated equipment. The rishabam reached the goshAlA safely.

As you can see, periyavA gave our rishabam a royal rescue by engaging the district collector, using sophisticated hydraulic equipment and police ambulance to safely transport it to live it remaining life in peace.

The update we got from the goshAlA yesterday was that the wound is very deep and cannot heal, so the leg will need to be amputated, but the rishabam will recover and survive on three legs. You can see that in the pictures posted below.

What one person did in a fit of rage has affected the rishabam’s life so badly and so quickly to suffer in pain without food or water, and its life and fate have been dangling in uncertainty for the last 7 days. Thanks to Sri Periyava now HIS life is out of danger but he has to live on three legs for the rest of his life. So much for the gratitude and sacrifice he did for humans.

Thought I would share this very touching and emotional incident with you all. Below are the pictures in sequence.

Sri Periyava Thiruvadi Sharanam. Rama Rama

Brutally Attached Rishabam lying in tatters in owners lap with severe pain. Little does he know the owner is going to mercilessly send him for slaughter

Injured Rishabam Transported to Slaughterhouse. See his innocuous face and eyes despite the pain how he is holding up. The owner did not for a second think about all this but cheap money. They did not even care to dress the wound but just threw him inside the truck with fresh cut deep wound.

Injured Rishabam sitting in slaughter house for three days without medical treatment, detoriating health, little food and water. You can see the slaugherhouse owner sitting in a small wall behind the cow. This is the place where they kill all the cows. Sensing danger, we were running all around to get him released ASAP.

With police intervention finally we managed to have the injured rishabam outside the slaughterhouse so he does not see the gory killing of his fellow cows and get mentally traumatized.

After collector’s order, royal rescue of Rishabam and boarding in an emergency ambulance and lifted with an hydraulic equipment. You could see the kind of treatment he is getting with a team of doctors including dressing up the wound before transported to Gosala.

Rishabam Currently in Jeyam Gosala recovering slowly

  2. Sir

Kindly share the address where the Rishabham is housed now.One vet who is a devotee of Mahaperiyava has shown an interest to help this Rishabham to alleviate it’s pain

You can share the address privately to my mail ID raman.rk1983@gmail.com

  3. It is shocking to read and the owner of the Rishabam was more keen to make money rather than getting it cured and the neighbor who used the ARUVAL to injure has no humanity left in him and both should be proceeded in the court of law. In case they get away they will face the punishment in the hands of DHARMA RAJA. Jai Hind.

  4. just like vedic patashalas, we should ensure that every small gho-shaala too has a trust, opens a bank account and create a seva for collecting corpus donations so that the gho-shaalas can earn income steadily and permanently! this is the biggest seva anyone can do.
may kamadhenu kalpavruksha and chintamani fulfill the genuine wishes of all supporters of sanatana dharma and unite them in destroying evils of the society and bring peace.
may brahmanas and gho-mataas always be respected at-least to some extent as they were before (especially before independence!).

  5. Alas ! Only humans can be so cruel !!

  6. We pray periyava to cure the wound of Rishabaa… can’t control my tears, why do human become inhuman..pls do not post such pics..it’s very hurtful..

  7. may mahaperiyava set right all the deformed buddi-s and make them fall at the feet of whomever they cheated or tortured from day-one!! may those without brains get sad-buddi and worship gho-mata; ganga; geetha; gayatri daily, hourly, … every minute and every second!! ram ram ram.

  8. there are some self-read astrologers that wear khakhi and keep advertising in famous spiritual tv channel that they are staying in abc hotel.. and “Bhiksha” can be performed for him!!!

There are also people that love holding mikes and make announcements that .. advertising that … “we’re doing a special paduka puja for someone who has performed over thousands of pujas and that we’re doing such paduka puja with special flowers and leaves.. and those who want a leaf or flower from such a paduka puja.. may CONTACT THE OFFICE!! Wow, and do you know what contact office means!!! submitting gold and cash to recieve the special flower or leaf!!

They think owning idol of big size and building a neivedya-factory in temple, will attract all the innocents of the village and nearby into their pooja trap and that they’ll fall forever at that bunch of selfish humans who are money and gold hungry always and who set a trap on the innocent people (in the form of some disease) and also offer a solution in the form of amulets so that they can never escape and can keep earning money forever!!!
God is the creator, protector and also know when to destroy such money-hungry looters from the roots!!

  9. This is applicable also in case of laddoo distributions in the famous temple of the world!! Can’t there be even one brahmana counter so brahmins who are madi can go and collect from them? Topic of Caste!!! oh YES.. there’s a difference between equality and Varna-ashrama.. even ambal has a name!!

Only when the respective varna perform their duty and not interfere with the other, will there be peace! Even after corona, if there are no lessons leaned, i think some other disaster will be on its way to teach hard lessons; especially for those who grab people’s wealth wrongfully and shamelessly in the name of darshan or sevas or false-help messages that get spread on Whatsapp saying helpme or my organization survive and make me a fund transfer.. when that person/organization will actually be filthy rich and will be heartily laughing at how many fools made free donations to him!!

Let all the born non-vegetarians (including egg-itarians or mushroom-terian or whatever other self-added nonsense terming it all vegetarian) and ESPECIALLY all the brahmins-turned non-vegetarians-fools get slapped severely and learn the hardest lessons of life and struggle all through their lives!!

every soul living shamelessly and cheating people should be dragged and people should be made to spit on such fools before sending them to jail forever!

How can even one dare to live such a life by cheating people openly and earning a living!! Now-a-days there are even some places that seek gold and wealth in the name of making this item or that item for god and that never happens!

  10. And, now these temples in the name of corona, have gone to the extent of grabbing wealth online and not even conduct archana or sankalpa or send prasadams as promised or even allow a proper darshan of the deity!!

Some lazy archakas even in some famous temples without any madi touch the idol.. do abhishekam.. apply bhasma or kumkum or chandana to every tom-dick-harry who visits .. eat or chew something in the garbha graha, have no sense of echal and again touch the idol! all this has creeped in only after the uselss bunch of govt’s interference in temple matters that tie-up with such archakas who shamelessly earn wealth wrongly.. thinking even god can’t do/say anything to these archakas and that their position is permanent, leave alone people or govt!

Let all the hotels/restaurants gets closed down FOREVER! Let the govt sitting shamelessly in the temples stop their business of looting wealth in the name of annadhana and selling crap inside the temple premise and also stop non-brahmins and other non-madi people in pants or ties from distributing neivedya prasadas to brahmins.. let them get a separate vessel for distributing to others!! if brahmins can’t even distribute to atleast a few brahmins who seek prasadam, why at all have even “neivedya” distribution!! all neivedya can be distributed just like the ones sold in packets for money by the temple looters!

this is what will happen if the temple looters wants to include in the list of temple-hotel-menu distribute in the name of prasada when it is not even been done a neivedyam with!! If they want to sell whatever they want, let them do from their own pockets outside the temple or let them conduct a annadanam at their home and invite all people who come to temple to get to their homes to have a feast!

  11. Even after many such incidents, not a single soul from such heartless bunch of humans, would have even given a thought as to the the ills they are committing! Only when those cheap fellows get the same kind of ill-treatment in their present life and also get kicked and thrown and sold for their own human flesh(!!) and cry their lungs out, and regret the crime they’ve all been doing all through their life, will someone who has to be equally punished the same way will even get a thought, wondering his own fate and may ponder over to stop this nonsense!

The only government that takes a BOLD and DARING step openly to altogether put an end to slaughter-houses and killing of any animals/birds/anything equating to killing a human itself and get jailed permanently can be called a TRUE Government!

Same with destroying tasmac’s from the root and absolutely banning it altogether..

Same with finishing off all hotels or restaurants that are found at every nook and corner like corporate hospitals!!!

Same with putting an end to the govt.’s nasty interference with administration of temple matters!!

Same with teaching those people (including some archakas tied up with govt.) sitting inside temples who grab people’s wealth and don’t even allow a basic darshan and are lazy enough to even do a basic sankalpa and ill-treat people with their words who have every right to FREELY see God for how-much-ever time they WISH to just the the VVVVVIPs whom they allow EVERYDAY for ‘N’ number of hours!!

    • Ram Ram
I can understand your anger and anguish.
But you have to understand that we live in a secular world surrounded by people belonging to all faiths and beliefs. So all our wish will never become a reality.
Animal Slaughter is one such. If at all we had to bring an ordinance on cow-slaughter we should have done it immediately after independence. Now I don’t think will venture into bringing such legislations. So it is simply futile to expect the Government to do something in this regard.
The only recourse we have is to open and sustain as many Goshaalaas as possible and maintain these Gomaathaas and Rishabams till they reach the Holy Feet of the Lord.
For that all Hindus must unite and try to create an awareness, collect funds and also involve in voluntary labour in such Goshaalaas. The spectacular work done by these noble souls, as narrated by Sai Srinivasan, is indeed exemplary, but that will not suffice in the long run. Every Hindu must put his/her best foot forward and participate in this Holy-Yagna.
So the onus is on US, and only US to avoid save the cows and bulls.

      • Correct, but even if we all unite and keep collecting funds, the amount of funds with the other parties waiting to send them to slaughter houses remains high! Their tie up with political parties and goondas help them. When they display physical power or threaten their families, finally its only US who are helpless! Those heartless humans never seem to learn a lesson! We know how they earn wealth through wrong means. Although such wealth they earn will not stay long, still this very same “wealth” is what is essential to even save such innocent beings! We should first STOP feeding government by dropping our hard earned pennies in temples which are under govt. control. This is the source from where most of the wealth earned by temples through donations are being distributed by those sickening officials to fund slaughter houses or individuals/organizations that are pro-meat-eaters or their own selfish selves who are brahmin-haters or for that matter hate some non-brahmin communities who are also vegetarians and are against cow-slaughter! Instead of giving donation to the Government in any form (the government and offcials already loot more than even one can think of!!), one should save that money to donate to such great people who are doing such exemplary tasks of saving these innocent lives!

      • Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameshvaram is one of the fine temples where even if you put good amount of money to the archaka in plate and NOT in their hundial, the next moment the hrce guy who spies from some distance comes and takes away the money from the archaka and drops it in (hrce) hundial in front of everyone saying no amount will be given to archaka in plate!! everything should go to hundi!! (so that “I” can live a happy and contented meat-eater life torturing and mocking everyone who interferes with “my” privacy of stealing temple wealth!!)
am sure once this hrce is thrown out from temples; temples could be a place where they can have gho-shalas back into place and people can willingly donate in kind or cash for such temple-owned gho-shalas!

hrce’s goal is only to root out culture and traditions that is prevalent already and make temples into shops selling anything under the sky and destroying sculptures and making money. they are not really bothered about gho-matas in the temples! As long as they see hundis full of wealth, their stomach is satiated!

Let me tell that people should STOP donating especially to one of the richest temples with huge numbers of visitors per hour itself .. because they are the source where all this corruption of donating moeny to non-hindu organizations happen!
People should also STOP buying these tickets to visit the god! Why can’t this rich temple, with all the wealth they have just earmark a portion of their entire collection to save gho-matas from all over the country!! Will they do it? NO. And, now we see their state’s govt interfering more so that they can loot before any other law comes up!! The govt has done NOTHING about temples or gho-shaalas!! Cheap politics and cheap wealth!!

Biggest repository for gho-shalas should be in the original temple lands (where churches or mosques or other fools that see only money even in dreams who are are illegally occupied and play dirty games!). Once we acquire our lost wealth of temple lands, and once we stop feeding government, and once we throw hrce-janthus ; am sure we can get back to see gho-shaalas filled with ghomatas and rishabhams and their children happy and enjoying being in the environment of true bhaktas who come to worship gods and not earn temple’s wealth!!

  12. Dear Sir

The location of the Police Station has been misspelt and the correct name is “Nadukaveri”.

    Periyava Charanam🙏🙏🙏🙏

  13. Sai
It is indeed a great saving and the way you have described the entire episode so beautifully captured the trauma, suspense and relief to the fullest. Ofcourse the photos added substance to the emotional narration.
    May Mahaperiyava bless all.

  14. Great Sir excellent to see through the life saving
