117. Sri Sankara Charitham by MahaPeriyava – Doing ‘Sam’; Direct evidence

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – In this small chapter Sri Periyava gives a direct evidence as to how thinking about Bhagawathpadhal brings us peace and tranquility.

Many Jaya Jaya Sankara for Smt. Sowmya the drawing & audio and Shri ST Ravi kumar for the great translation. I was telling Sowmya this drawing was really exceptional…seems that Periyava is projecting out in very close proximity looking us us. Rama Rama

Doing ‘Sam’; Direct evidence

He was the incarnation of Lord Paramasiva; hence [he is] ‘Sankara’ – one of the many names of Siva.  To denote that the day of incarnation is Vaisaka-Sukla-Panchami, [he is named] ‘Sankara’.  Being the creator of ‘Sam’, the ultimate peace [he is] ‘Sankara’; the ultimate peace produced by love.

This very gathering where we have all assembled is visible proof to show how true the third [reason] is.  How peaceful everyone here feels?  How everyone is filled with love?  He is not here in person.  It is 2500 years since he is gone.  Still, the very thought of him and also whenever we think about him, he is there as the Supreme Being who gives us absolute peace!  There is a similar crowd even for cinemas. But is there peace?  Is there love?  No.  It will only induce lust and create restlessness. A lot of people gather even for political meetings.  Is there love?  Is there peace?  No.  It would only be an exercise in abusing some party or principle and stirring up hatred.  It would only be instigating a hartal or a demonstration, which will disturb the peace of that place.  Here, in spite of the busy activities related to the holy celebration, there is absolute peace in the heart.  “sam karoteeti samkara:” [शम् करोतीति शम्करः] – he has the name Sankara since he is creating ‘Sam’ – peace, which the highest of all happiness; this very gathering is proof for that name!  What bigger fortune can be there than this?  This [peace] is not present in wealth and status.  As they increase, whatever peace is there will also leave!  There is instant peace if we think about Acharya even for a moment.  But one should think [of him]!  That is why I keep exhorting you all to perform this utsavam [Acharya’s jayanti] and to make this celebration much bigger than any other.

    Jaya Jaya Sankara!!
    Hara Hara Sankara!!

  4. Drawing of Periyava by Sowmya is tatrppam !!
Though it is regular I find improvement each ,& ever time she does ! Great Vara prrasadam by Periyava !!

  5. Yes absolutely Sai ! In our today life mind should be with Bhagawath smaranai where ever we may be ! Aikya Bhavan with Zbhagawan ! Absolute shanthi we get out of it ! Rama Rama …Periyava Charanam smaranam sada,!!

  6. I personally haven’t experienced what Periyava describes here. Has any one else experienced what Periyava describes here when we chant Sankara nama? I am wondering how many times would we have to chant experience the Shanthi

    • Anon Garu,

Maha Periva says, the time you think and say ‘Sankara’, you don’t have any other thought but only the omnipresent Shiva. No other feel you get. It is not how many times one chants, but how much one felt in his/her bottom of heart. A matter of fact, ‘feel (experience)’ cannot be ‘expressed’ but only ‘felt’ by individual. For instance, if I ask you to explain the feel of hungry, can you? Can you explain the feel that you get just before you sneeze? Two people cannot feel the same thing of food or any other material thing, for that matter. It is an individual interest, involvement and response one has to under go. The bottom line is, keep ‘feeling’ the omnipotential for ever and ever and ever, you realize this one day that ‘feel’.

I tried my best way to share my opinion, hope you get my point.

Jaya Jaya Shankara…. Hara Hara Shankara….

    • I did and do experience it every time I do Bhagawan Nama Japam. It does not matter whether it is Sankara Nama, Govinda Nama, Rama Nama. My understanding of Periyava mentioning here is when we involved ourselves in a sathsang (Puja, Utsavam, Japam, Upanyasam, etc) the mind is much more calm than when we indulge in materialistic pleasures. Rama Rama

      • You are precise Sai Garu….. We need that ‘Yogam’ (the literal meaning Yogam is ‘joining’ and not what we think, in general as ‘luck’) towards Satsangam every time to purify ourselves.

    • Thyagaraja Swamigal chanted rama nama 96 crore times and got Srirama darshanam. So that can be a number you can aim

      • While true, my suggestion is not to expect anything when you do Japam. mantra siddhi happens in various forms and shapes. For Him, swami came in person to give Darshan. For others, it could be different. Challenge with a targeted goal is that swami may choose a different form to give Anugraham to you, which may be different than a form that you set as a goal before you start the Japam.

    • Bhagavan nama bhakthi is blind faith. Keep the faith and do at least 1 hr nama japam daily and soon you will start feeling the shaanthi. Hear this to rejuvenate your faith – https://youtu.be/hlEtJyWbkn4
