There were so many cows that have been saved during this Bakrid which I will write in detail later but want to share with you a very moving and emotional rescue happened on the eve of Eid.

As you all know, we have been doing this cow rescues for past two years saving the lives of several hundred cows in the process. This rescue happened in the slaughter house today, just over a 1 km away from my home. Over the last couple of months, I have built a pretty decent nexus where I have the info. sellers, brokers/dealers, slaughter houses, their mode of operation, etc. I have a good friend of mine who is a strong Sanatana Dharmic and runs a shop few meters near this slaughter house. I asked my friend to keep a close watch on the activities of the slaughter house and its movements. Couple of weeks back, a pair of Rishabams were brought in a truck for killing but the guy did not kill them the next day as typically they do as the local slum people did not have cash resulting in meager beef demand. This forced the guy to keep the two native breed rishabams in the slaughter house itself tying them pretty close to a pole with very restricted movement, no food/water to drink or eat and a very soggy ground to stand with no roof at the top. They had to put up with the sweltering heat during the entire day with very little food/drink. Also, when a cow comes to a slaughter they will be broken mentally as they know their end is nigh since the smell of the blood is all over the place and they can easily sense it. If that is not enough, these cows have to watch their fellow cows butchered cruelly right in front of them that too all in night. Based on my advise, my friend was observing all these activities closely from his shop.

Around a week back, the butcher killed one of the two rishabams in front of the other which really petrified the other rishabam. Due to lack of demand, the butcher did not kill the other rishabam but it had to undergo a horrendous time with no food/drink, scorching sun, standing non-stop in a single place for 20 days in a row. Since it is a native breed cow (Kangeyam breed) it could withstand all this but slowly his condition started deteriorating. I went personally and saw these horrendous happenings and was really shattered beyond words. After a lot of negotiations, back and forth, finally bought this cow released this beautiful rishabam from the hell.

I really cannot describe how fast the rishabam wanted to get out of the place when we untied his rope to start to our place. Though he looks like a giant he is like a small baby ready to obey our orders and give whatever we feed him. As we all had wondered million times, how in the earth someone can kill these innocent gentle beings is really beyond me.

We brought to the ancient Shiva temple (Lord Pasupatheeswarar) near my home, gave a good bath, did a puja and fed him with fodder, fruits, vegetables as much possible. He just drank so many gallons of plain water such was his thirst level. Though he looks big, he is so gentle and very calm that I named him ‘Kuzhandhai Swamy’. Even a child can approach and play with him.

Also, during this entire rescue and negotiation process I deliberately asked my friend to take a lead on this (with me working closely behind the scenes). The idea is to get more Gho Rakshaks involved so they can gain more awareness, relate more to these causes and take a lead on future rescues. After the rescue today, where my friend and his wife walked down the cow from the abattoir to temple they were very emotional told me this which was really touching.

This is the Happiest Moment of our lives, Our wedding day or the day our son’s were born don’t even come close. They spent the entire day today in the temple in the cow along with the parents and children doing Gho Seva for the rishabam.
