Please lend a helping hand to Shri Sethu’s Gosala during this critical time

Vedas are the backbone of Universal welfare. Yagnyam is the backbone of that Vedas. What serves as its backbone in turn is the Kartha who performs the Yagnyam and the cow which gives the primary products offered in the Yagnyam. Therefore it becomes apparent that the cow has come to be one among the two which serve as the backbone for the world to exist and function well. That’s why it is considered that “Gho Rakshanam is Bhoo rakshanam” (preserving the cow is preserving the world). In Tamizh the saying goes thus: “Pasu Kaaththale paarinai kaththal”. It is for this reason that while praying for universal welfare it is customary to mention specifically, the cow first and then the performer and only then to pray for the entire world. – Jagadguru Chandrasekharendra Saraswathy Swamigal

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara,

I want to call your attention on one of our unsung heroes of Cow Rescue efforts. Around 18 months back, when we started our Cow rescue operations, Shri Sethu Narayanan, an ardent devotee of Periyava, and a native of Marungapallam village near Tanjore immediately opened up his farm with no hesitation to accommodate several cows and calves from our rescue operations. Marungapallam is a small village located 70 kms from Tanjore (derived from Marunthuppallam Oushadhapuriswar (Lord Shiva) built by Rajaraja Chozha and further built upon by Sharaboji Maharaja). This farm was pretty much devastated by Gaja cyclone which forced him to scale down his farm operations. When he saw the Marakkanam cow rescue post he saw it as Periyava’s will and with no hesitation expressed his interest offering to help in the comments section of the post. His wife Smt. Uma Sethu is Periyava’s Anukkath Thondar, Srikantan Mama’s sister’s daughter. This is how I got connected with him and from then on we have been in constant touch strategizing and discussing how best to rescue more cows and sustain them.

He currently has around 60 cows out of which 40 cows are through our rescue operations. Though we support little through our blog, he also does not expect any kind of support from us and maintains all the cows on his own. Great isn’t it? In my experience working with many Gosalas, I have not seen too many folks operating these days with the sole objective of Gho Samrakshanam. I’m not putting anyone down but letting you know how Sethu as an individual differs in this regard.

Over the last several months, out of his own funds/efforts he completed plumbing works, motor installation, water bowls, wiring (power), cutter, shed and fencing works. He also started cultivating green fodder plantation of various types to feed the cows.

With the current Covid-19 mega crisis that has been on a rampage his Gosala in the remote village is facing severe crisis. First, there is a great shortage of labour to care and feed the cows which is putting the Gosala activities on the back foot. There are other operational issues he has run into as well. The transformer near his home exploded that resulted in the failure of motor pumps not functioning resulting in disruption of water supply. The EB won’t fix it due to the lockdown and don’t see it as a crisis. This means he has hire to more labourers at an exorbitant cost to source the water from nearby wells and ponds. Imagine how many gallons of water he has to source every day to take care of 60 cows? This is very manual intensive that takes a lot of physical toll and also increases the financial overhead for Sethu. That apart, getting cow fodder, green grass, and hay is also a challenge with rising prices. As I mentioned above, though he had planned for the Gosala to be self sustainable with this unprecedented crisis it did not pan out the expected way due to shortage of labour and water.

My request to all Periyava devotees, can we all please give a helping hand to this great soul who magnanimously opened up his farm to accommodate many of the rescued cows (including the last 15 of them from Namakkal rescue on Mar’ 14)? In my opinion, there won’t be greater things our Periyava will be pleased with than helping someone who is struggling to uphold one of the core elements for the welfare of this world. (Lokha Kshemam, Gho Matha Samrakshanam).

I have been to his home and Gosala and was amazed to see the way cows have been maintained. Since it is a small remote village, there is zero pollution and one almost feels like they are in a Gosala of 1940’s. Such a green and serene atmosphere with pin drop silence and zero traffic. Indeed a haven for all the cows. He invites all of us to visit his Gosala and help him out with any constructive feedback as well.  He can be reached out at rishi_sethu@yahoo.com.

I would request all to open their hearts and wallets to a noble soul at this time of grave need. Sri Periyava Thiruvadi Sharanam. Rama Rama

The cow which provides the essential materials necessary for the preservation of Yagnyas, even when it cannot offer anything, has the power of preserving the Manthras by her mere holy presence. That is why it is believed that any Japa (chanting of Mantras) done in a cowshed has the power of multiplying its benefits billion (Crores) times. There is not a more sacred and pure place than the cow shed called “Ghoshtam”. – Jagadguru Chandrasekharendra Saraswathy Swamigal

  7. Please install hydroponic based fodder cultivation which needs only 10% water and can be grown under closed space. 1 kg seed gives 7 kg green nutritious fodder helping to reduce the cost of feed. Several youtube demos are available and there is subsidy also from Govt Animal husbandry dept.
