எதிலும் மிகையாகப் போகாமல் நடுநிலைமையில் இருப்பதுதான் மிதம். ‘மிதம்’ என்றால் ‘அளக்கப்பட்ட’, ‘அளவறிந்த’ என்று அர்த்தம். Measured behaviour என்று சொல்லும் போதும் எதிலும் தீவிரமாகப் பறக்காமல், நிதானமாக, கவனமாகச் செய்வதைத்தானே என்பது measured குறிக்கிறது? Measured -தான் மிதம். ‘ஜ்யாமெட்ரி’ என்கிறோமே அது ‘ஜ்யா-மிதி’ என்ற ஸம்ஸ்க்ருத வார்த்தைதான். ‘ஜ்யா’ என்றால் பூமி. ‘மிதி’ என்பது ‘மிதம்’ தான் – அதாவது அளக்கிற விதிமுறை. யஜ்ஞ்த்தில் வேதிகை நிர்மாணம் முதலானதுகளுக்கு பூமியை அளப்பதிலிருந்தே ‘ஜ்யாமெட்ரி’ உண்டாயிற்று. ‘க்ஷேத்ரம்’ என்றாலும் பூமிதான். அதனால்தான் இதற்கு ‘க்ஷேத்ர கணிதம்’ என்று பெயர் இருக்கிறது.

செய்கிற காரியம், பேசுகிற பேச்சு ஸம்பாதிப்பது, செலவழிப்பது, புத்தியை ஓடவிட்டு நினைப்பது, அலைவது, சாப்பிடுவது, ட்ரெஸ் பண்ணிக் கொள்வது, பொழுது போக்கு எல்லாவற்றிலுமே, ஒவ்வொன்றிலுமே ‘ஓவராக’ப் போய்விடாமல், மனஸ் எதற்கும் வசப்பட்டு விடாதபடி, அளவறிந்து measured -ஆக வைத்துக் கொள்வதுதான் மிதம். எல்லாவற்றிலும் இப்படிப் பண்ணுகிற பழக்கம் வந்துவிட்டால் சித்தம் ஸமநிலையில் பரம சாந்தமாக ஆவவதற்கு உதவும். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர ஸரஸ்வதி  ஸ்வாமிகள்

‘Moderation’, is walking on the middle path, without going to extremism either way. ‘Mitham’ means ‘Measured’ as in ‘Measured Behaviour’. This means, doing a thing after much thought, without haste. ‘Geometry’ is actually derived from the Sanskrit word, ‘Jya-Mithi’. ‘Jya’ means earth. ‘Mithi’ means measured or a regulation for measuring a thing. So geometry was found from measuring the earth for creating the ‘Fire-Pit’ (Vedikai) for the Vedic Sacrifice. ‘Ksehtra’ also means this earth and hence ‘geometry’ was also known as ‘Kshetra-Ganitham’.

So ‘Mitham’ means keeping the mind ‘measured’, without allowing it to run wildly, without any control,  after secular work, earning, spending, eating, dressing, entertaining, etc. If we are able to practice such moderation in our life, it will help us to keep the mind under control and attain everlasting peace.  – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamigal
