Sanatana Dharma and Unexplained Miracles

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – There are countless miracles that makes us realize that Bhagawan cannot be comprehended by our senses. Sri Periyava talks about this extensively in Deivathin Kural and tell us that Bhagawan is way beyond our senses and it is not wise of us to find/research him through our senses.  While we, especially the younger generation, wants to have logical/scientific answers to all we do, the reality is, some are way beyond any explanation or proof. We just have to marvel at the wonders of Bhagwan and enjoy his creation.

Below is a 10-min. video that shows some unexplained phenomena that directly contradicts logic/science. Rama Rama

  1. MIRACLES – do they really happen to prove that GOD is exist? I don’t think so. GOD does not need to prove HIMSELF nor HE needs any identity for that matter. The above video however, really shows some ununderstandable things, which does not mean that GOD wants to show HIMSELF in such manner, my humble opinion.

    It is human tendency is to relate complex and ununderstanble things with supreme power. I don’t find it wrong but we should catch these things to develp the belief much stronger to feel the GOD. GODness is the feel (Anubhavam) and it should only felt when one deeply indulges in it.

    In fact, GOD do appear in the manner of humility towards others;

    HE displays HIMSELF when one shows unconditional love towards others.

    GOD definitely omnipresent in every human’s, only inclination needed to feel that HE is within.

  2. Anyone who had read the books authored by the devotees(who had experienced HIM over years) of Ramana Bhagahavan or MahaPeriyava would clearly understand that neither Maharishi nor Maha Periyava encouraged or discouraged the miracles(Automatic Divine Reaction.. in the words of Maharishi).

    Miracles are only a point of start force for those who need a pull to enter the real world of spirituality (which is not about demands to the superior power for worldly things- There does not exist a demand for even the Moksha- It is just to SURRENDER).

    Summary: We cannot say that these miracles did not bring about change in anyone. Miracles – not for the intent of causing a Miracle – Such as that of Sridhara Aiyaval, Ramalinga Swamy, ThiruGnana Sambandar should not be measured with a counter that how many other humans were inspired to reach such highest levels of yogic attainment.

    We still see that a lot of belief exist in common man to have a Snanam at Thiruvisalur on Kartheeka Amavasyai. No matter the common man thinks to wash away sins and collect punya and desires to achieve worldly things.

    Like Raman Bhagawan and Maha Periyava says ” Ulle poi Velai Seiyum”. The seed which has been sown will work from inside.

  3. Sir,
    “Miracle” is a term used to wonder about things which a human being cannot understand. Human being has only five sense organs and the sixth being the Shastra. There is nothing more.
    The events and unexplained coincidences one experiences in the exterior world have all taken place as per a Master programme determined by the karmas of the individuals. The Cosmic All Knowing Power determines the so called “miraclular happenings” to guide the human and to wean himself away from the sanatana agnaayanam. One should only learn to appreciate that supreme power in every observation, instead of “wondering inexplicably”, ad infinitum . If one persists that way the person on the street is bound to conclude wrongly and he will never try to come out of his Samsara any day, as he lulls his brain meditating on the very same so called “miraculous happenings”. His miseries will never leave him. One should learn to appreciate the Hand of the Lord and dig deeper gradually to learn “who he himself happens to be”.
    Hari Om.

  4. One has to be careful in talking of miracles. Miracle is explained as an event (especially pleasant and welcome) that cannot be explained by normal laws of nature and is therefore attributed to divine agency. But the normal laws we speak of are of the three dimensional world. Scientists have now discovered more dimensions – up to 11 and all these worlds with greater dimensions coexist simultaneously. So, many of what we call ‘miracle’ here may be normal elsewhere.
    All religions rely on and promote belief in miracles, especially among the mass followers. But real sages discourage such belief and stress just faith in God and honest living and striving. We know there are benign beings and other spirits. Some action may also be due to such other beings. The effect of a real miracle is seen if there is a transformation in the quality and style of life of the person after the event. Seen in this light, most miracles are not genuine at all.
    Most of the miracles reported in our Puranas are one-time events. But some have happened again.
    Tirujnanasambandha and Manickawachaka merged in Light; this happened again in the case of Ramalinga Swamigal in the 19th century. Sridhara Ayyaval likewise disappeared in the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Makalingaswami. These were not miracles but discarding of the body in some Yogic manner. The question is whether such events have brought about any improvement in individuals or society.
    In the last century, many miracles were reported by devotees of Sri Ramana Maharshi. But he always discouraged discussion about them. He merely talked of Automatic Divine Activity. Many extraordinary events were reported by the devotees of Vallimalai Tiruppugah Swamigal and these are recorded in the Centenary Commemoration volume published in 1970. Many miracles are reported by the devotees of Shirdi Saibaba. In fact,his cult is spreading without any central organization or leadership only on the strength of reported miracles. Nowadays many events are claimed by the devotees of Mahaperiyava also. One is not sure whether all these could be called by the name ‘miracle’ or something else!
    One thing is sure. A religion or cult which depends upon miracles for its origin, growth and inspiration is sure to crumble if the miracles on which they are based are revealed to be otherwise later on.

    There is the simple fact of Revelation – ie insight transcending the normal human way of knowing through the senses. This is by direct perception of Truth- what is called Jnana. [Aparoksha anubhuti] This is the method advocated in the Upanishads, Brahma Sutra and Bhagavad Gita which are the three authorities for Sanatana Dharma. They do not advocate or extol miracles at all!
    At the same time, popular Puranic religion is based on miracles . The appeal of the miracle to the popular mind cannot be denied. Most religious people have at times experienced some event or other which appeared abnormal. Psychologist Carl Jung spoke of “Synchronicity” or ‘meaningful coincidences” when we cannot establish a causal connection in en event. So, such things do exist, after all !
    As the English Poet William Cowper wrote:

    God moves in a mysterious way
    His wonders to perform;
    He plants His footsteps in the sea,
    And rides upon the storm.

    Deep in unfathomable mines
    Of never-failing skill
    He treasures up His bright designs,
    And works His sovereign will.

    Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
    But trust Him for His grace;
    Behind a frowning providence
    He hides a smiling face.

    His purposes will ripen fast,
    Unfolding every hour;
    The bud may have a bitter taste,
    But sweet will be the flower.

    Blind unbelief is sure to err,
    And scan his work in vain;
    God is His own interpreter,
    And He will make it plain.

    Or as the popular saying goes, ‘God cooks in many pots!’.
