சாந்த்ராயணம் என்னும் ஒரு வ்ரதம் உண்டு. உடம்பைப் போட்டு ரொம்ப வருத்திக் கொள்ளப்படாதுதான் என்பது நம் மதக் கொள்கையானாலும், எத்தனை ஸாதனைகள் பண்ணியும் சித்த சுத்தி வராதவர்கள், தங்களுக்கு மற்றவர்களைவிட ஜாஸ்தியாயிருக்கிற பூர்வ பாப கர்மாதான் இப்படிப் பழி வாங்குகிறதென்று புரிந்து கொண்டு அதைக் கழிப்பதற்காக உடம்பை வருத்திக் கொண்டு சில அநுஷ்டானங்களைப் பண்ணும்படி சாஸ்த்ரம் விதிக்கிறது. இதற்கு ‘க்ருச்ரம்’ என்று பெயர். இப்படிப் பண்ணினால் தாங்கிக் கொள்ள முடியாதவர்கள் அதற்குப் பதில் ‘க்ருச்ர ப்ரதிநிதி’யாக இத்தனை ஆயிரம் காயத்ரி பண்ண வேண்டும் என்றும் இருக்கிறது.

இப்படி ‘ஸ்ப்ஸ்டிட்யூட்’டைச் சொல்லிவிட்டதால், இந்த ‘ஸப்ஸ்டியூட்’டுக்கும் ‘ஸப்ஸ்டிட்யூட்’, அதற்கும் ‘ஸப்ஸ்டியூட்’ என்று போய், ஒரு கோதானம் பண்ணிவிட்டால் அது க்ருச்ரத்துக்கு ஸமானம் என்று ஆகி பசுவுக்குப் பதில் அதன் விலையைத் தக்ஷிணையாகத் தருவதாக ஆரம்பித்து, இந்தத் தக்ஷிணையையும் குறைத்துக் கொண்டே போய், தற்போது பரிஹாஸத்துக்கு இடமாக, ஒரு பிராம்மணனுக்கு ஆறே காலணா தக்ஷிணை கொடுத்துவிட்டால் க்ருச்ரம் அநுஷ்டித்தாகி விட்டது என்று வைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம்! பாப பரிஹாரமாக உடம்பை வருத்திக் கொள்வதற்காகவே சாந்த்ராயண விரதம் ஏற்பட்டிருக்கிறது. –  ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்

There is a Vrata called, Chandrayana.  Although the principle of our religion does not encourage tormenting the body, certain practices have been prescribed in the shastras for those people who are unable to obtain purity of mind despite lot of efforts and for those who feel that the reason for their suffering more than others, is their karma of their previous births and therefore, wish to get rid of them.  This is called, “Krcchra” (penance). It has also been prescribed that for those who would not be able to bear the suffering this way, should chant Gayathri Japa, so many thousand times, as a substitute (‘Krcchra pradinidhi’).

Since this ‘substitute’ has been mentioned, we have gone to the extent of offering ‘substitute’ to this substitute and another substitute to that substitute and started to equate offering of a cow (Gho Dhanam) to krcchram and further, giving only the cost of the cow as fee (Dakshina) and gradually reducing even that fee, to a ridiculous level of saying that krcchram has been observed if only ‘kalana’ (25 paise), is given as fee.  Chandrayana vrata has been established for getting rid of one’s sins by taxing one’s body.  – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal
