Below is the list of karmas we need to do on Aavani Avittam day. The date of Upaakarma varies on the Veda one belongs to and the country/city one lives in. Please check with local Vadhiyars or Panchangam on the same. The procedure manual and audio listed below are for Yajur Veda but if there are interested volunteers who can work with me we can create content for other Vedas too and upload them. The existing content can be modified and published so all the Vedic sects benefit and all the contents are in one place.
One key thing, please take a look at the karmas listed below which needs to be done on the Upaakarma day. Is is really possible to complete all the specified karmas (including all our nithya karmas) by 7AM/8AM/9AM batches like we do in temples these days? I asked a few Vadhiyars about this and all I get is a standard answer. People don’t have time nor dedication so we have to flexible to their needs! On Aavani Avittam, it is almost impossible to have Vadhiyars to come to our home and do this function leisurely and sincerely as they would have been solidly booked. So it’s a judgement call one has to make whether to skip many of the karmas and do it in a temple within an hour or understand the meaning & do in our homes sincerely. From my personal experience, over the past few years I could only complete all these karmas only around 2PM.
Moreover, karmas like Yajnopaveeta Dharanam, Kaandarishi Tharpanam all has to be done by noon (or afterwards) so all the more reasons for doing it the right way by taking the day off and doing these karmas sincerely rather than doing in a vestigial fashion. We also need to understand the purpose of Upaakarma which is to initiate the study of Vedas and not just changing Poonal :-). We all know how much Maha Periyava has emphasized on the need to do anushtanams sincerely without rushing up and also understand the significance behind all the Mantras.

We have provided enough pause and breaks in between so the audio files can be played while doing the karma. Shri V. Sriram Ganapadigal has explained the meaning and significance of every karma so we can start listening to those right away (just the meaning part & not mantras); also take a look at the document as we need to do some prep. work ahead of time and get ready for the grand Aavani Avittam day!

Gayathri Japam Steps (Next Day Morning)
All the steps listed in Nithya Karmas need to be performed with the addition of Gayathri Japam (with homam for Brahmachari’s) which needs to be done after completion of Praathah Sandhyaa Vandanam and Praatah Samithaa Dhaanam for Brahmachari’s; Gruhastha’s should complete Praathah Sandhyaa Vandanam and Owpaasanam. All the other steps in Nithya Karmas remain the same.

1. இந்த ஜபத்தினை ருக் வேதிகள் அநுஷ்டிப்பதில்லை
2. ஸாமவேதிகளும் இந்த ஜபம் அநுஷ்டிப்பதில்லை.
3. (சுக்ல & கிருஷ்ண) யஜூர் வேதிகள் மட்டும் அநுஷ்டிக்கின்றனர்.
4 அவர்களும் வருடத்தில் ஓரு குறிப்பிட்ட நாளான்றி மற்ற நாட்களிற் அநுஷ்டிப்பது இல்லை.
5. அவர்கள் *ஆவணி அவிட்ட* நாள் அன்று ஆவணி அவிட்ட ஸத்கார்யத்திற்கு முன் இந்த ஜபம் செய்து பின் ஆவணி அவிட்ட மண்டபம் செல்கின்றனர்.
6. அவர்களிலும் தலை ஆவணி அவிட்ட (ப்ரதம ச்ராவண) ப்ரஹ்மச்சாரி இந்த ஜபம் செய்ய தேவை இல்ஸை
இத்தகு விதிகளின் காரணங்களைக் காணின் காமோகார்ஷித் ஜப பற்றிய தாத்பர்யம் நன்கு விளங்கும்
யஜுர் வேத பாடசாலைகள் பொதுவாய் two-semester எனும் format ல் நடத்தப் பட்டு வந்தன. முதல் (odd) semester 6 மாதங்கள் (சாந்திரமான) ச்ராவண பௌர்ணமியில் ஆரம்பித்து தைஷ்ய பௌர்ணமி வரை ( approximately ஆவணி முதல் தை வரை). இரண்டாம் semesger மாசி முதல் ஆடி வரை.
முதல் (odd) semester ல் யஜூர் வேதம் (ஸம்ஹிதா, ப்ராஹ்மணம், காடகம், ஆரணயம்) கற்பிக்கப் பட்டது.
இரண்டாம் (even) semester ல் வேதம் *அல்லாத* வேத-அங்கங்கள் (சீக்ஷா, வ்யாகரணம், கல்பம்) கற்பிக்கப் பட்டன
இவ்விரண்டு semester ல் வேதம் கற்றக் கொடுக்ககப்படும் முதல் ( odd) semester மிக புனிதமாக முக்யமானதாய் கருதபபட்டது.
ஆகவே அந்த odd semester ஆரம்ப நாளாம் ச்ராவண பூர்ணிமா அன்று ஆசிரியர் மாணாக்கர்கள் யாவரும் ஸ்நான மஹா ஸங்கல்பத்துடன் ஸ்நானம் செய்து புதுப் பூணூல் அணிந்து ஸ்ரீவேத வ்யாஸர் காண்டரிஷிகளுக்து தர்பணம் ஹோமம் பூஜை செய்து பின் வேத ஆரம்பத்துடன் முதல் ( odd) semester தொடங்குவர். இத் ஸத்கார்யத்தை ரிஷிகள் *உபாகர்மம்* என மொழிவர். இவ்வாறே ஆவணி அவிட்டம் அன்று உபாகர்மாவை இன்றளவு செய்து வருகின்றனர்.
இது போலவே முதல் (odd) ஸெமஸ்டர் முடியும் நாளாம் தைஷ்ய பூர்ணிமா அன்று ஸ்நானம் புதுப் பூணூல் ரிஷி பூஜை செய்து முடிக்க வேண்டும். இந்த ஸத்கார்யத்தை *உத்ஸர்ஜனம்* என ரிஷிகள் மொழிவர்.
இந்நாளில் உத்ஸர்ஜன ஸத்கார்யம் *செய்வதில்லை*. உத்ஸர்ஜன செய்யாமல் அடுத்த வருஷ உபாகர்மம் செய்யக் கூடாது.
So உத்ஸர்ஜன ஸத்கார்யம் செய்யாத தோஷ ப்ராயசித்தமாக *காமோகார்ஷித்* ஜபம் விதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. (ஸங்கல்ப வாக்யம்: *தைஷ்யாம் பௌர்ணமாஸ்யாம்* – தை பௌர்ணிமையில் *அத்யாய உத்ஸர்ஜன* வேத படனத்தின் உத்ஸர்ஜன ஸத்கார்யத்தை *அகரண* செய்யாத தோஷத்தின் *ப்ராயஸ்சித்தார்தம்* ப்ராயஸ்சித்தமாய் *அஷ்டோத்திர ஸஹஸ்ர ஸங்க்யயா* 1008
*காமோகார்ஷீத் மன்யுரகார்ஷீத் இதி மஹாமந்த்ர ஜபம்* காமோகார்ஷீத் மன்யுரகார்ஷீத் என்ற மஹாமந்திர ஜபம் *கரிஷ்யே* செய்கிறேன்.
OK தலை ஆவணி அவிட்ட ப்ரம்மசாரி வாழ்க்கையிலே *முதல்* உபாகர்மாவை இனிமேல்தான் செய்யப் போகிறான். உபாகர்மாவே செய்யாத மாணாக்கனுக்கு உத்ஸர்ஜன செய்யாத தோஷம் இல்லை. எனவே அச்சிறுவனுக்கு இந்த வருஷம் காமோகார்க்ஷீத் ஜபம் அவச்யமில்லை.
ரிக் வேதி & ஸாம வேதிகள்: இவர்கள் உபாகர்மா அன்றே முதலில் உத்ஸர்ஜனமும் பின் உபாகர்மாவும் செய்கின்றனர்.

(1)ருக் & ஸாம வேதிகள் உபாகர்ம தினத்தில் உத்ஸர்ஜனமும் உபாகர்மாவும் செய்வர்.
(2) யஜூர் வேதிகள் உபாகர்மா அன்று முதலில் (உத்ஸர்ஜன அகரண ப்ராயஸ்சித்த) காமோகார்க்ஷீத் ஜபம் பின் உபாகர்மா செய்கின்றனர்
