ஆசாரம், ஸம்பிரதாயம் என்பதிலெல்லாம் நாம்தான் ரொம்ப மேல் என்று நாம் நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்த போதிலும், நம் பக்கத்தில் நிறைய மூலதனமிருந்தும் வேதபாடசாலைகள் தினக்ரமேண க்ஷீணித்துப் போகிறதேன், வடக்கே இத்தனை ‘டோல்’கள் இப்படி நல்ல ‘ஸ்ட்ரெங்கத்’தோடு இருப்பதேன் என்று எனக்கு ரொம்ப நாள் புரியாமலிருந்தது. அப்புறம்தான் அவர்களையே கேட்டதில் புரிந்தது.

“மூலதனம் இல்லை என்கிறீர்கள். இத்தனை மாணவர்கள் எப்படியிருக்கிறார்கள்?” என்று கேட்டேன்.

“மாணவர்கள் இருப்பதற்கு மூலதனம் என்னத்துக்கு?” என்று எதிர்கேள்வி கேட்டார்கள்.

“ஃப்ரீயாக சாப்பாடாவது போட்டால்தானே வித்யார்த்திகள் சேர்வார்கள்?” என்றேன்.

“ஆமாம், சாப்பாடு போடவேண்டியதுதான். அதற்கு மூலதனம் வைப்பானேன்? கிரானாக்கார பனியாவோ, மார்வாரியோ இருக்கிறான். (கிரானா என்றால் பலசரக்குக் கடை.) ஸம்ஸ்க்ருதம் படிக்கிறோம் என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டு பசங்கள் போய்க் கேட்டால் அவன் ஆட்டமாவும் மக்கனும் கொடுத்து விடுகிறான். (மக்கன் என்றால் வெண்ணெய்.) அந்தந்த மாணவனே அந்த மாவைப் பிசைந்து தவ்வாவிலே போட்டு சுட்டு ரொட்டி பண்ணித் தின்று கொள்கிறான். அவ்வளவுதானே? ‘மக்கன்’ கிடைக்காவிட்டால் கூடச் சரி. அப்படியே நெய்யுமில்லாமல் சுக்கான் ரொட்டியாக வாட்டித் தின்று விடுவது எங்களுக்குப் பழக்கந்தான். தவ்வா கூட வேண்டுமென்பதில்லை. ரொட்டி மாவுருண்டையையே கொஞ்சம் தட்டி அப்படியே சுள்ளியிலே போட்டுவிட்டால் அது உப்பிக் கொண்டு வெந்துவிடும். அதைத் எடுத்துத் தின்பதும் வழக்கம்தான். கொஞ்சம் ஜாஸ்தி வசதியிருந்தால் பருப்பை வேகவைத்து ஒரு டாலும் பண்ணிக் கொண்டு விடுவோம். எத்தனையோ கிரானாக்கள் இருக்கின்றன. ஒவ்வொரு கடைக்காரனும் ஒரு பையனுக்கு மாவு முதலானது கொடுக்க யோசிப்பதில்லை” என்று ரொம்பவும் ஸிம்பிளாகச் சொல்லி விட்டார்கள். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்

In spite of the fact that we Southerners are more particular in following the aacharams and traditions and the fact that we have more resources, the number of our Veda Patasalas have been on the decline. I was unable to understand why this was so and how the Veda Patasalas in the North were going strong. I understood when I spoke to them.

‘You say you do not have the resources. How then are so many students enrolled for studies in these patasalas?’ I asked.

They posed a counter question. ‘Why do we require resources if we have to have students?’

‘Students will enroll only if they are given free food at least’ said I.

‘Yes, they need to be provided food. But why do we need resources for that? The Kirana merchants (Kiral means the person who runs grocery shop) and shop owners are there. If the students tell them that they are learning Samskritam, they are given atta (wheat flour) and Makhan (butter). The student makes the dough, prepares the rotis on the tava and eats them. Even if butter is not available, we are used to having dry rotis without butter. Even a tava is not needed. If the flour is flattened and placed directly on the fire, it will inflate and get cooked. We are used to eating rotis made this way too. When we can afford, we boil some lentils and prepare a dal.
